'Ibrahim Governance Weekend' (IGW 2025) Forum Kicks Off in Marrakech
The opening ceremony of this event was marked by a message from His Majesty King Mohammed VI to the participants, which was read by HM the King's Advisor, André Azoulay.
This flagship event of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, held annually in a different African country, highlights the critical role of Africa's resources in accelerating development and transforming the continent's position in the new global economy.
The program of this year's edition, which runs until June 3, features an opening day focused on current leadership challenges in Africa and worldwide, in addition to the Ibrahim Forum 2025, held under the theme "Financing the Africa We Want."
The Forum includes plenary sessions on Africa's priorities, resource mobilization, reform of the multilateral financial system, and investment across the continent.
These discussions aim to contribute to shaping a strong African stance ahead of the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development, scheduled from July 1 to 3 in Seville, Spain, and to highlight Africa's ability to play an active role in this area rather than remaining a mere passive beneficiary.
A comprehensive report will be published following the IGW Forum, complementing the preliminary "Facts & Figures" document with the key conclusions from these three days of discussions.
Established in 2006, the Mo Ibrahim Foundation aims to strengthen Africa's voice on major global issues and emphasizes the importance of governance and leadership.
The Foundation provides data and analysis on the continent's challenges, brings together key stakeholders for dialogue, and supports initiatives aimed at improving leadership and governance.

ANC urges Morocco to «apologize» for use of South African flag during Jacob Zuma visit
After several days of silence, South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC), led by President Cyril Ramaphosa, has finally responded to former President Jacob Zuma's show of support for Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara. Zuma, who now heads the uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party, had sparked controversy with his position. «We condemn the opportunistic involvement of Jacob Zuma, who has aligned himself with efforts that erode South Africa's standing in the international commuity and betray the principles of non-alignment, peace, and anti-colonial solidarity that he once purported to uphold», the ANC said in a statement. «It is shameful that a former leader of a liberation movement s betraying our historical mission and showing his true colors as he stands in opposition to the aim of contributing to the creation of a better Africa and world that is more humane, just, equitable, democratic, and free». The ANC concluded this section of its statement, addressing Zuma's visit to Morocco, by reaffirming its position: «We reiterate our call for the completion of the decolonization process in Africa, in order to safeguard the right to self-determination for African peoples still under colonial rule. The ANC calls upon all progressive forces within the continent and around the world to intensify their solidarity with the people of Western Sahara in their pursuit of self-determination». The South African Flag and a Diplomatic Incident The party also expressed «deep concern over a troubling situation involving the Kingdom of Morocco». It condemned the use of South Africa's national flag during a bilateral meeting with an opposition figure «who does not represent the democratically elected government of South Africa». «This reckless and provocative act constitutes a flagrant violation of international diplomatic norms and constitutes an unacceptable intrusion into South Africa's internal political affairs. It is a dangerous attempt to delegitimize our constitutional order and discredit the authority of a democratically elected government», the ANC stated. «The inclusion of our national symbols in partisan activities hosted by foreign powers is not only misleading but part of a broader agenda of foreign interference», Ramaphosa's party added. The ANC has called on the South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs to issue a formal diplomatic protest to Morocco and to demand immediate clarification and an official apology from Moroccan authorities. This diplomatic protest, however, comes as a surprise. The South African flag was visibly displayed, alongside the Algerian flag, during a meeting in December 2023 between the ANC's secretary-general and Salah Goudjil, the former president of Algeria's Upper House. HM King Mohammed VI Has Made Morocco A Leading Nation in Africa
His Majesty King Mohammed VI has led Morocco's democratic and economic development with wisdom, making the Kingdom "a leading country" on the African continent, according to Lord Henry Bellingham, former UK Foreign Office Minister for Africa. "It is fitting to pay tribute to His Majesty King Mohammed VI and his leadership, which has enabled Morocco to achieve remarkable democratic progress and emerge as a leading country across Africa," he stated in an interview with MAP on the occasion of the celebration of the Throne Day. Lord Bellingham highlighted the promising evolution of UK-Morocco relations, bolstered in particular by the close ties between His Majesty King Mohammed VI and His Majesty King Charles III. "In terms of trade, many opportunities have opened up between the UK and Morocco. This is largely due to the path laid out by HM King Mohammed VI," he added, noting that the two Kingdoms share many common features, including privileged relations with the world's major economies. Numerous sectors are open to strategic high-level partnership between the two nations, Lord Bellingham continued, underscoring the significance of the decision by Rabat and London to strengthen their bilateral ties. Portugal Fully Supports Autonomy Initiative as Most Serious, Credible & Constructive Basis to Settle Moroccan Sahara Dispute
As part of the international momentum generated under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, in support of Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara and the Autonomy Plan, the Portuguese Republic expresses "its full support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the most serious, credible and constructive basis to settle this dispute." This position was expressed in the Joint Statement signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and the Portuguese Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, following their meeting on Tuesday in Lisbon.
