Ryan Johnson's own goal gifts Luton all three points in League One opener

Rhyl Journal3 days ago
Matt Bloomfield's side, who were playing in the Premier League 15 months ago, had produced barely a chance of note – against a team which at the same time were finishing 10th in the fourth tier – until the Dons defender inadvertently lifted the ball over Nathan Bishop from Nahki Wells' forward punt and in off the crossbar with five minutes left.
It was the first time since 2019 Luton had played at this level and an immediate return to the Championship looked like being anything but straightforward as Johnnie Jackson's visitors, fresh from victory in the League Two play-off final, contained them with relative ease for much of the match.
The opening 45 minutes saw the teams muster two shots on goal between them, both off target and one of which landed on the roof of the Oak Stand behind Wimbledon goalkeeper Bishop.
Visiting defender Joe Lewis might have been lucky to escape harsher punishment when he halted a clear run on goal for Wells, receiving just a yellow card for tripping the Hatters debutant when seemingly the last man.
Reuell Walters finally had Luton's first shot on target after 63 minutes, drawing an outstanding one-handed save from Bishop with a drilled half-volley from range.
Wimbledon looked to have done enough to earn a point, but then came Johnson's unfortunate wayward header to gift the Hatters victory.

Arsenal transfer news: Real Madrid star Rodrygo makes major call amid Liverpool hijack

Arsenal have had a very busy summer transfer window so far with Mikel Arteta welcoming a host of new faces to North London and it appears that some other big signings could be in the offing The 2025/26 Premier League season is drawing ever closer for Arsenal. There's now less than two weeks until the Gunners' opening game of the campaign against Manchester United at Old Trafford. ‌ It all means there's still plenty of work for Mikel Arteta to do to get his squad in the best position it can be. Two pre-season friendlies remain for the North London side to test themselves ahead of meeting the Red Devils against Spanish duo Villarreal and Athletic Bilbao. ‌ Those two games will give a host of new signings more chances to integrate, with ex-Chelsea man Noni Madueke finally expected to link up with his new teammates. Meanwhile, Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi and Cristhian Mosquera will all get the chance to step out at the Emirates Stadium for the first time. ‌ While Arsenal already have a host of new faces in situ, their work in the transfer market might not be quite finished yet. Arsenal remain keen on adding a new winger to their squad. And it appears that they already know the man they want. Take a look at all of the latest Arsenal transfer rumours: Rodrygo makes transfer decision Rodrygo looks set to stay with Real Madrid despite serious interest from the Premier League. Arsenal were previously linked with a move for the Brazilian wideman this summer, albeit there is competition from Liverpool and Tottenham. ‌ But it appears that Rodrygo wants to stay where he is. According to Spanish outlet AS, Rodrygo is now keen to stay at the Bernabeu and fight for his place under Xabi Alonso. Rodrygo believes he has enough quality to add to the existing options at the club. And that could potentially force Arsenal to look elsewhere for attacking recruits. Liverpool complete hijack While Liverpool were potentially looking to rival Arsenal for Rodrygo, the Reds have already beaten their Premier League rivals in the race for one player. The Reds have confirmed a deal for Salford City striker Will Wright despite the Gunners having agreed a deal for the teenager. ‌ It was previously reported that Arsenal offered around £250k for the youngster but he has instead opted to move to Anfield. Wright has already played for Liverpool's under-21 side after completing his switch to Anfield. ‌ Wonderkid rejects move French defender Jeremy Jacquet has turned down a move to Arsenal after an approach from the Gunners. It was suggested that the North London side had made an attempt to sign the 20-year-old. But Jacquet has rejected that opportunity according to Foot Mercato and his current club Rennes are now attempting to rebuff any further interest having offered the youngster a new deal until 2029.

Man Utd transfer news: Benjamin Sesko boost as Bruno Fernandes makes demand

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes wants to see more signings before the transfer window slams shut and RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko is their top target Manchester United are looking to bounce back this season after their worst ever Premier League finish. United finished 15th last season and failed to qualify for the Champions League after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham. ‌ They have already strengthened their squad with additions of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon, while Marcus Rashford has joined Barcelona on loan and Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof have been released. ‌ Plenty more incomings and outgoings are expected before the transfer window slams shut, with Ruben Amorim keen to ship out the likes of Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia. ‌ Sesko boost Manchester United have received a boost in their pursuit of Benjamin Sesko after it emerged that the striker's RB Leipzig team-mate Lois Openda will not be making the move to Sunderland. United and Newcastle are both interested in signing Sesko, who netted 21 goals in 45 games across all competitions last season. Fellow Leipzig striker Openda had been heavily linked with Sunderland and it is unlikely they would have let two forwards leave in the same window. However, Sky Sports are now reporting that Openda will not be joining Sunderland and that Leipzig are likely to sell Sesko instead. Fernandes' transfer demand Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has said the club need to add "more quality" in the transfer market this summer. ‌ "It's improving, but it's not where we want it to be," Fernandes said after United drew 2-2 with Everton in pre-season. "It's a game of football, there's always passion there. Whatever happens, happens. There was nothing spicy there, it's normal, it is part of the game. It's been positive [the US tour] and it's good to create a bond with the players. "We looked a bit lazy today and we need to change that. We needed more quality to get everyone to step up a bit more and to have more to do to get into the starting line-up. I think that's what the club and the manager are trying to do and hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that." ‌ Shearer verdict Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer is confident that Benjamin Sesko will be a success if he joins Manchester United this summer. When asked if Sesko has the skill-set to thrive in England, Shearer told Amazon Prime: "I do, I think it's a matter of who can afford him. There is no doubt that this football club has a history of making an absolute fortune on transfers and this guy could be the next one to come into the Premier League. "Either foot - left or right - which is great to see. The work rate, the work off the ball, he's got all them things and he's got very good technique, good balance and I don't think there is a doubt in my mind that and he would look very comfortable in the Premier League. I do think he has a lot to learn, but he can learn no doubt."

Emma Raducanu adds Rafael Nadal's former coach Francis Roig to team full-time

The 2021 winner at Flushing Meadows has worked with British coach Mark Petchey on an informal basis since March and enjoyed a positive run of results. However, Petchey's TV commitments meant he was always unable to become Raducanu's full-time coach and after a trial with Roig following Wimbledon, the 22-year-old will begin work with him in Cincinnati this week after he agreed a contract until the end of 2025. Raducanu has struggled to settle with a coach in recent years until her part-time work with Petchey started to pay dividends earlier this season. A WTA 1000 quarter-final showing at the Miami Open in March was followed by a round-of-16 run at the Italian Open before she made the last eight in the first women's tournament at Queen's Club. Aryna Sabalenka proved too strong for Raducanu in round three at Wimbledon, but this was backed up by a semi-final at the Citi Open as the British number one targets being seeded at the US Open later this month. TV commentator Petchey, who worked with Andy Murray at the start of his career, revealed in July that Raducanu would need to find a full-time coach soon and she has in Roig. Spanish coach Roig worked with Nadal alongside Nadal's uncle Toni for the majority of the 22-time grand slam champion's career and more recently was part of Matteo Berrettini's backroom staff. Raducanu will stay close to Petchey, PA understands, but turns her focus back to rising up the WTA rankings with a strong display at the Cincinnati Open over the next fortnight.
