This Is the Moment for Mexican Indian Food to Flourish
In one bite, the fresh and drinkable buttermilk, called chaas in Hindi, is invited to party with Sinaloan aguachile, bringing together flavors from India and Mexico into something new, delicious and essentially stateless.
'Is it Indian? Is it Mexican?' Rishi Kumar said on the phone. 'No, it's something else.'
Mr. Kumar and the co-chef Zubair Mohajir opened their restaurant last year in the Bucktown neighborhood, and quickly found the house packed for their energetic and sharply intelligent Mexican Indian cooking.
It's not unusual to see margaritas crowding tables in the late afternoon as diners share quesadillas shining with melted Amul cheese and rip pastry off their lamb barbacoa biryani. Like the more successful dishes on the menu, the biryani surfaces regional ingredients and techniques without veering toward the formulaic.
Mexican Indian food might sound like a bit of a novelty, orchestrated for a fast-food chain's viral marketing campaign — it's not.

North Hollywood mural lauds Dodgers' Kiké Hernández ‘for standing up for what is right'
Dodgers utility player Kiké Hernández was not born and raised in Los Angeles. A North Hollywood mural seemingly inspired by the San Juan, Puerto Rico, native's stance on immigration sweeps shows that doesn't matter. Hernández began a June 14 Instagram post by stating, 'I may not be Born & Raised, but this city adopted me as one of their own.' Local artist Louie Palsino has cemented the second part of that statement in a new mural on the side of the Noho Tires & Wheels building on the 5600 block of Lankershim Blvd. It features Hernández's image surrounded by the words 'Born X Raised' and 'Los Angeles.' Hernández said plenty more in the post, which seems to have inspired Palsino. The two-time World Series champion expressed support for his adopted city's immigrants and dismay at how many of them were being treated in a series of sweeps by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The sweeps in Los Angeles have sparked protests locally and elsewhere in the country. 'I am saddened and infuriated by what's happening in our country and our city,' Hernández wrote. 'Los Angeles and Dodger fans have welcomed me, supported me and shown me nothing but kindness and love. This is my second home. And I cannot stand to see our community being violated, profiled, abused and ripped apart. ALL people deserve to be treated with respect, dignity and human rights.' Under the name Sloe Motions, Palsino has painted a number of high-profile murals, including one in the Fashion District of Kobe and Gianna Bryant that was vandalized, restored, then vandalized again all within the last few months. He declined to discuss the Hernández mural for this story, instead directing The Times to a statement he posted about it on Instagram last week. 'Thank you @kikehndez for standing up for what is right and for Los Angeles,' Palsino wrote. 'this ain't a political post or anything to stir up any government agenda to divide us. this is just paying homage to standing up for what is right and a real over government.' Palsino painted the Hernández mural on a building that already featured two of his other Dodgers-themed pieces — one of legendary broadcaster Vin Scully on an adjoining wall and one of iconic Mexican pitcher Fernando Valenzuela on the gate in front of the garage's driveway When the gate is pulled open, a split image of Valenzuela and Hernandez is created. Hernández has been a Dodgers fan favorite since his first stint with the team in 2015-2020. In 2017, he hit three home runs, including a grand slam, in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series against the Chicago Cubs to help send the Dodgers to the World Series. He signed with the Boston Red Sox as a free agent after the Dodgers' 2020 World Series championship, but returned to L.A. in a July 2023 trade. Hernández hit .262 in 54 games with the Dodgers that season, helping him earn a one-year, $4-million contract for 2024. Last postseason, Hernández was a key member of another Dodgers championship team. He hit one of the Dodgers' two solo home runs in a 2-0 win against the San Diego Padres in the decisive Game 5 of the NL Division Series. He then contributed seven hits and four RBIs in the NLCS against the New York Mets and five hits against the New York Yankees in the 2024 World Series.

Criminal investigation against Los Alegres del Barranco suspended after band releases anti-narcocorrido
Months after facing backlash for projecting the image of an alleged drug cartel leader during a concert, Los Alegres del Barranco have reached an agreement with Mexican authorities that would temporarily pause a criminal investigation into the band. The Council of the Judiciary of the State of Jalisco agreed on Monday to lift the criminal proceedings that began after the Mexican corrido band behind songs like 'La Gente del Chapo' and 'La Muerte del Comandante' displayed a photograph of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes (also known as 'El Mencho'), the reputed leader of the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación, during their March 29 concert at the Telmex Auditorium in Zapopan, a suburb of Guadalajara. The decision was made after the members of Los Alegres del Barranco agreed to several conditions, including releasing an anti-narcocorrido track and agreeing to a probationary period of six months, Billboard reported. On June 15, the band released a song called 'El Consejo,' about the consequences youth can face if they get involved with drug lords and cartels. 'It's worth noting that after accepting [Jalisco] Gov. Pablo Lemus's invitation to record an anti-corrido, the song 'El Consejo has more than 2 million cumulative plays on all of the band's platforms,' Los Alegres del Barranco said in a statement to The Times. The agreement requires that the band members maintain residency in Guadalajara, that they periodically check in with state authorities and that they hold conversations with incarcerated youth, encouraging them to stay away from organized crime. The case will be dropped after a six-month period if the musicians meet the conditions, the band said. Days after the group's controversial concert, the U.S. State Department revoked the band's work and tourist visas, which resulted in the cancellation of its scheduled U.S. show dates, including a stop on May 25 at Pico Rivera Sports Arena. 'I'm a firm believer in freedom of expression, but that doesn't mean that expression should be free of consequences,' Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau wrote in an April 1 post to X announcing the visa revocations. 'In the Trump Administration, we take seriously our responsibility over foreigners' access to our country. The last thing we need is a welcome mat for people who extol criminals and terrorists,' he added. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also criticized Los Alegres del Barranco during a May 31 press conference. 'No apology can be made for violence or criminal groups,' she said. Roughly a third of Mexico's states and many cities have banned the performance of narcocorridos in recent years.

Also, it has coffee if you don't like to drink beer in the morning.) BALLARD — Not a beer cafe but just a bar, Schooner Street Pub has just taken over the former Pour Decisions space on 80th Street and 15th Avenue Northwest. It's got drinks plus sandwiches and typical pub fare. WEST SEATTLE — Fresh off of opening a downtown waterfront scoop shop, Molly Moon's has added yet another location, this one in the Junction area of West Seattle. BELLEVUE — A 'purpose-driven cafe' that is apparently 'seed-oil free' according to its Instagram, Sano just opened a location in Bellevue serving protein bars, acai bowls, smoothies, and that sort of thing. It's the second of four planned locations for Sano, which started in Mercer Island. CAPITOL HILL — A new Indian restaurant called Aamrai recently opened on Bellevue Avenue. Its owner, Rupesh Naik, has worked all over the world and started his career in Mumbai. CAPITOL HILL — There's another new Indian restaurant on the other side of Capitol Hill: Mint and Martini, which on Instagram claims to have 'signature mocktails.' SOUTH LAKE UNION — A hip new waterfront wine bar called The Cove just opened in South Lake Union. It has small bites to go along with your wine, plus weekend brunch. CAPITOL HILL — The former Mercado Luna building got a rooftop bar last month and now it has a smash burger walk-up window called Double O' Burgers. This is part of the ongoing transformation of the space under Pike Street Hospitality Group. BALLARD — A tapas restaurant from South African–raised Sheldon Raju, Kahlo and Loyal just opened in the former Little Prague Bakery space. According to MyBallard, the constantly shifting menu is 'influenced by street food from around the world.' WEST SEATTLE — Steakhouse chain Jak's Grill, which used to have a few locations around the Seattle area (and still has one in Issaquah), is expanding back to the city limits, opening a new restaurant in West Seattle at the Junction. CAPITOL HILL — There's another place to get tacos from local favorite Carmelo's Tacos, as the burgeoning chain now has another restaurant at Broadway and Denny, near Cal Anderson Park. WEST SEATTLE — The search engine-unfriendly Italian restaurant The Neighborhood just opened in the Morgan Junction, serving pizza, pasta, and a few entrees. WHITE CENTER — Wolfpack Cellars, a small winery, has moved its tasting room to 9617 16th Avenue Southwest. Tasting visits are $20, but that fee is waived with the purchase of a $30 bottle.
