Operation Sindoor showed what satellite intelligence can do. Now, India is racing to build a network big enough to protect every inch of its land, sea and sky
They were the unseen heroes, invisible but vigilant eyes in the sky during Operation Sindoor. Cartography satellites (Cartosats), radar imaging satellites (Risats), and Earth-observation satellites (EOSs) played a key role in the precision hammering of Pakistan's air defence systems and air bases.
That has driven home the importance of having more such silent sentinels in space in the era of high-tech warfare.

Stringent framework finalised to ensure drones don't have Chinese parts
NEW DELHI: The Indian defence establishment has finalised a comprehensive stringent framework to ensure that drones being acquired from domestic private sector companies do not have Chinese components and electronics in them. The mechanism, with the requisite technical verification and evaluation methodologies, will be implemented in a couple of months to further strengthen the level of checks already put in place, which include more comprehensive certifications to be provided by drone-manufacturers. "The framework has been completed and is under approval. Once approved, thorough testing will be conducted to ensure our equipment is free from any security vulnerabilities," additional director general of the Army Design Bureau Major General C S Mann said. This has become imperative as the armed forces began acquiring a large number of drones amid the military confrontation with China over the last few years. Operation Sindoor against Pakistan, which saw intense cross-border hostilities from May 7 to 10, has further underlined the need for such a mechanism.

Piyush Goyal unveils ₹3 lakh crore boost for research, jobs, and startups
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal announced a ₹ 3 lakh crore allocation for new schemes aimed at fueling India's economic progress. Speaking at an interactive session with industry leaders in Bengaluru, Goyal highlighted the government's commitment of strengthening the country's research, employment, and India's startup ecosystem, ANI reported. The Union minister also gave details about the latest Cabinet approvals, which include: ₹ 1 lakh crore for research and innovation: A significant amount of ₹ 1 lakh crore will be dedicated to promote research and development and innovation. 1 lakh crore for research and innovation: A significant amount of 1 lakh crore will be dedicated to promote research and development and innovation. ₹ 2 lakh crore for employment generation: Another allocation of ₹ 2 lakh crore towards employment generation incentive scheme and several other programs for skill development, including an internship program. The schemes aim to benefit various sectors across the country. "These will give encouragement to support an ecosystem of startup, tech and manufacturing," Goyal added, speaking of the approvals. Piyush Goyal also praised Bengaluru's established deep tech and startup ecosystem, calling it a "jewel in the crown" of India's economic landscape. He acknowledged the crucial contributions of the city's global capability centres and tech entrepreneurs in driving growth. He said, "I also believe that the deep tech industry, the startup ecosystem, which is present in Bengaluru in a big way, is a jewel in our crown. We are very proud of the good work that the tech sector particularly, and the global capability centres are doing." Beyond economic policy, Piyush Goyal also addressed broader national concerns. During his interaction, he expressed satisfaction at the appreciation received from attendees on Operation Sindoor following a recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam. "I was also very pleased when one of the questioners complimented the government for the fitting response given under Operation Sindoor to the terrorist attack,' he said.

India has made huge leap in missile technology: Former DRDO chairman
Dr G Satheesh Reddy COIMBATORE: India has reduced its missile production turnaround time from 10-12 years to 2-3 years, making a huge leap in technology, said Dr G Satheesh Reddy, president of the Aeronautical Society of India and former secretary of Directorate of Defence Research & Development and chairman of DRDO . 'This enables us to stand on a par with developed countries like the US, Russia and China though these countries are one to two decades ahead of us," he told TOI on the sidelines of a programme in Coimbatore on Saturday. "India is a missile power. India is actively developing hypersonic missiles and air-to-ground-borne missiles like the BrahMos,' he said. He said India has 300-400 drone manufacturing companies with nearly 25,000 AI engineers in the southern region. They are capable of making the world use products made in India. "So far, India was working for others, getting their products. Now India has to make them get our products and also get them to work for us," he said. Earlier, addressing at the Academia-Industry Meet 2025 for Aerospace & Defence, hosted by the Kumaraguru Centre for Industrial Research & Innovation in association with the Aeronautical Society of India, he highlighted four key takeaways from Operation Sindoor. First, the Indian armed forces have gained confidence in indigenous technologies. Second, it boosted the morale of the country. Third, the industry has witnessed success, which will increase orders. Lastly, the world has seen India's capabilities, which is expected to increase export orders as well.
