Southern Living ranked the South's best cities. Here's where Wilmington stands

Yahoo17-03-2025
A popular lifestyle magazine named Wilmington among the best cities in the South.
Wilmington is no stranger to 'top cities' lists. The Port City is the least likely U.S. city for you to catch a cold in, one of the best small cities for filmmakers and among U-Haul's top metro areas for growth. Wilmington holds the title for drunkest city in the state, ranking in the top 30 nationwide.
Southern Living's 2025 'The South's Best Cities' has joined Wilmington's growing list of lists. The publication received over 10,000 responses to an online survey conducted by Proof Insights. The survey ran from July to August 2024 and asked readers to rate their favorite places across the South.

Wilmington was voted the No. 13 city in the South. While it didn't earn the top spot, Wilmington was named Southern Living's No. 1 'City on the Rise' in 2024. The city also ranked higher than Birmingham, Alabama, where the magazine is based out of.
Here's what Southern Living had to say about Wilmington:
'It's home to a lively riverfront and scenic historic district, beautiful gardens, and family-friendly attractions. Although there's plenty to see and do right in town, multiple beaches are just a short drive away.'
The magazine recommends several well-trodden Wilmington staples, including the Riverwalk, Cargo District, and events such as the upcoming Azalea Festival. Southern Living also praised eateries including Indochine, Britt's Donut Shop and Seabird. Asheville was North Carolina's only other entry on the list, with Southern Living noting how residents and community leaders have banded together to help the city bounce back following the devastation of Hurricane Helene.
For the ninth consecutive year, voters chose Charleston, South Carolina, as the best city in the South.
Here are the cities that topped the list:
Charleston, South Carolina
Savannah, Georgia
Asheville
New Orleans
Nashville, Tennessee
Greenville, South Carolina, finished sixth, followed by St. Petersburg, Florida; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Atlanta; Lexington, Kentucky; Athens, Georgia; San Antonio; Wilmington; Franklin, Tennessee; Orlando, Florida; Birmingham, Alabama; Austin, Texas; Tampa, Florida; Huntsville, Alabama and Annapolis, Maryland.

This NC town is ‘on the rebound' — and ranks among nation's best places to visit

A North Carolina city is 'on the rebound' — and ranks among the nation's best places to visit. Asheville is No. 3 on a list of destinations boasting scenery, activities and restaurants that make them some of the most interesting places for travelers to check out in the country, according to results updated in late June. 'Surrounded by stunning landscapes, packed with entrepreneurial talent and evolving with the tastes of the people who settle and explore them, these destinations show off what makes the United States so distinctive,' CNN Travel wrote in its report. To determine the best towns to visit, the website said it asked readers and contributors to nominate places across the country. 'We considered hundreds of candidates and winnowed the list to 10 by evaluating the finalists' attractions, food and beverage offerings, cultural and nightlife scenes, diversity, sense of identity, proximity to other interesting spots and 'wow factor,'' the website wrote. 'We also looked at travel essentials, including lodging options and the ease of getting there.' Why Asheville ranks as a top travel destination On the list of top vacation spots, Asheville was the only place in North Carolina to rank in the top 10. CNN Travel said the city ranked high for its 'scenic setting, dining and drinks, outdoor access' and art scene, adding to its legacy of being a mountain getaway destination. 'Last year, Hurricane Helene's destruction knocked Asheville off its stride,' the website wrote in its report. 'But the storm has unified this resilient community more than ever. And Asheville's mountain views, scenic trails, vibrant neighborhoods, lively arts scene and delicious food and drinks are all still here for you to enjoy.' In a write-up about the Asheville area, CNN Travel said the hurricane closed parts of the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway and unleashed catastrophic flooding in low-lying parts of the River Arts District. But several attractions — including the iconic Biltmore Estate — are welcoming visitors as Western North Carolina rebuilds. 'Just get back up here, spend money,' Brad Childers, general manager of the Asheville-area restaurant Hell or High Water, told the outlet. 'We're open, we're ready. Everything is still gorgeous. These mountains are still here — they're not going anywhere.' The city isn't a stranger to being recognized as a fan-favorite destination. Earlier this year, it was named one of the nation's best places for beer lovers and one of the South's top cities, McClatchy News reported. In the more recent rankings, the No. 1 place to take a trip was Ithaca, New York, a roughly 55-mile drive southwest from Syracuse. Rounding out the top five: Missoula, Montana, at No. 2Bend, Oregon, at No. 4Annapolis, Maryland, at No. 5 CNN Travel didn't share additional information with McClatchy News on July 3.

Planning a picnic in Miami or a drive to Disney? Pay attention to July 4 forecast

You may hear booms and see flashes in the sky on the Fourth of July weekend. But that may not be fireworks. Thunder, lightning and dousing rain are in the forecast for Florida's holiday hot spots, including Miami, the Keys, Orlando and Sanibel-Captiva. Storm chances run between 50% and 80% in most of these destinations, with South Florida and Orlando near the top of the percentage scale. Blame it on a potential tropical system that could challenge North Florida in the next week, according to the National Hurricane Center. A stalled front traveling south could help drag wetness across the state. MORE: Florida could get soaked this weekend as potential tropical system looms Here's a rundown: Miami-Fort Lauderdale area Focusing in on South Florida, the crummy weather begins Wednesday with an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms during the day, with temperatures running between 82 and 86. ▪ Thursday, when your attention is on packing the car for a road trip on the three-day weekend, features a 70% chance of storms from 2 p.m. onward. ▪ Friday, Independence Day, when fireworks are scheduled from Coral Gables to Key Biscayne, Hialeah to South Beach and Miami Springs to Fort Lauderdale, the rain chances are 70% during the day and 50% at night, as of the Wednesday weather service forecast. ▪ Saturday and Sunday bring more of the same — 70% Saturday and 50% Sunday. ▪ Relief comes after we head back to work on Monday, but unsettled weather will still bring a 30% to 50% rain chance into Tuesday. Florida Keys Key West, we like you a bit more this holiday weekend. Oh, you're going to give us a 50-50 chance of disappointment on July 4 and 5, with lingering 30% rain or storms Sunday. But 50% is better than 70% unless you're a yard plant. Orlando Donald Duck might be OK with the 80% storm chance Thursday through Independence Day Friday and the lingering 70% Saturday and Sunday soakers. People heading to the resort town with tickets to Disney or Universal in hand might gripe. Sanibel-Captiva With The Bubble Room set for its reopening on July 14 and The Mucky Duck's owner telling CBS he hopes to have his island favorite restaurant rebuilt by the fall and in time for Christmas, signs of Captiva and Sanibel's rebirth after last year's twin hurricanes Helene and Milton hearten. While these popular Florida West Coast attractions aren't ready for July 4, we still know that some of you plan to head to one of Florida's loveliest beach getaways for the holiday weekend. That string of 80% to 90% breezy and thunderstormy days in the forecast from Wednesday through Sunday are not cause for celebrations. Tampa-Ste. Pete An almost certain chance of thunderstorms and showers at 80% to 90% from Wednesday through Sunday.

Home to North Carolina iconic attraction reopens after Hurricane Helene's devastation

CHIMNEY ROCK, N.C. -- An iconic tourist attraction in an area of western North Carolina among the hardest hit by Hurricane Helene reopened to the public on Friday, nine months after the storm brought historic flooding, destruction and loss of life. North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein and other officials attended a reopening ceremony at Chimney Rock State Park, which is about 25 miles (40.2 kilometers) southeast of Asheville. The main portion of the park will now be open again from Fridays to Mondays to visitors who make reservations, Stein's office said. Stein also signed into law before the ceremony's crowd another state Helene recovery bill finalized by the General Assembly on Thursday that sends $700 million to the state's Helene relief fund and appropriates $500 million of that. And Stein announced a new tourism campaign to encourage travel and spending in the North Carolina mountains. 'Today's reopening is a huge achievement,' Stein told attendees. 'Chimney Rock is just one of the many places that make western North Carolina unforgettable.' Last September's storm swept away the ornate stone and concrete bridge across the Broad River to reach the portion of the park that contains the 315-foot (96-meter) high geological formation that's shaped in keeping with the park's name. The park, which also features hiking trails and other amenities, usually attracts 400,000 people annually. A road had to be paved and a temporary bridge made from old railroad cars was laid over the river. The reopening provides needed encouragement to those in adjoining Chimney Rock Village, where a third of the hamlet's businesses were destroyed as river waters removed buildings from their foundations. 'It almost wiped us off the map,' village Mayor Peter O'Leary said on Friday. 'The village knew one thing that was of utmost importance to our survival. We had to have Chimney Rock State Park open again.' Some village businesses are reopening. Before Friday's bill signing, the General Assembly already had appropriated or reallocated more than $1.6 billion for Helene recovery. The new Helene law is the fifth relief package approved by the Republican-controlled General Assembly since last fall. The Democratic governor said Friday that he's still seeking direct aid for small businesses and more funds for affordable housing. But he was still pleased with the legislature's action. 'We have a lot of work to do, but it's also good to take stock and recognize that today is a good day,' Stein said. The governor is also seeking more federal funds for Helene recovery beyond the billions already received by the state and by those harmed by the storm. State officials say the storm caused more than 100 deaths in North Carolina and generated roughly $60 billion in damages and needs.
