Augusta mayor unveils riverfront development proposal to extend the Riverwalk, rebuild Boathouse

Augusta's mayor wants the city to get rolling on the river. Standing in front of the city's shabby Boathouse Community Center on Riverfront Drive on Friday, Garnett Johnson announced a proposed redevelopment of Riverwalk Augusta into a Savannah River showpiece to help stoke tourism and economic development. The money is there, he said – an estimated $22 million through a renewed 1-cent special-purpose local option sales tax and re-allocation of funds from another development project that went bust. But the proposal also needs voters' approval when the penny tax appears on the ballot later this year. This seat is taken: Augusta Commission names interim District 4 representative "With your support and momentum of SPLOST 9 we will build a new riverfront that is accessible, that is beautiful and alive with possibility for all of Augusta to enjoy," Johnson said. Specifically, the proposal calls for a restoration and beautification of Riverwalk, which has shown its age since the 1980s despite routine maintenance. Riverwalk also would be extended from the Fifth Street Marina, the proposed future site of an outdoor adventure center featuring a zipline. The landscaped stretch of greenspace would create a nature walk that ends at the upgraded boathouse, which Johnson said would be stripped to the studs to use the building's foundation footprint in the rebuild. Before its use as a community gathering place, it was built in 1987 as the Palmer's Seafood House restaurant. As an events venue, the facility grew increasingly harder for the city to maintain, including flooding and a mold infestation that for a time drove out the Augusta Rowing Club from its home on the boathouse's ground floor. Augusta's SPLOST 9 funding requests includes $5 million to restore and enhance the current Riverwalk and $3 million to extend it, Johnson said. The new boathouse, he said, could be funded through $14 million taken from a $93 million mixed-use development that commissioners authorized in 2017 to refurbish the old depot on Reynolds Street. The development, which included a parking deck for global tech company Unisys, never materialized, and the Augusta Downtown Development Authority voted in 2020 to terminate its agreement with Alabama developer BLOC Global. "The funding is already earmarked and can be reappropriated to support this visionary, community-focused project," Johnson said. 'Amazing' Durham café announces sudden closure over 'burden' rising costs

An 'amazing' Durham café has closed after rising costs became 'more and more of a burden'. Maple Patisserie, on Durham's Riverwalk, announced 'with a heavy heart' on Monday (June 30) that it has shut the doors. Founded in 2022, the family-run business has become known for serving up 'excellent' hot drinks and 'truly amazing' pastries. But today, the business confirmed on social media that it had decided to close, thanking customers for their support over the years. A statement said: 'With a heavy heart, we have decided to close Maple Patisserie. 'We feel like it's the right time to leave with the ever rising costs becoming more and more of a burden. We couldn't have done it without you, and for that we are forever grateful. 'So sincerely, thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone that has ever supported the business and enjoyed Maple desserts. We will miss it always. Farewell.' The closure has already been met with sadness online, with one person saying: 'Absolutely gutted. You are going to be a big miss. 'Have so many happy memories coming in to see you guys. All the best for the future and we will be in touch for the next birthday cake.' Another added: 'So gutted for you both, you have put your heart and soul into it. You will be a big miss for so many people who loved coming to your shop.' A forfeiture notice - a document used by a landlord to terminate a lease - was placed on the windows of the site, saying bailiffs have re-entered. A spokesperson for Estabulo said there has been 'no official confirmation regarding the permanent closure of the restaurant'.

Southern Living ranked the South's best cities. Here's where Wilmington stands

A popular lifestyle magazine named Wilmington among the best cities in the South. Wilmington is no stranger to 'top cities' lists. The Port City is the least likely U.S. city for you to catch a cold in, one of the best small cities for filmmakers and among U-Haul's top metro areas for growth. Wilmington holds the title for drunkest city in the state, ranking in the top 30 nationwide. Southern Living's 2025 'The South's Best Cities' has joined Wilmington's growing list of lists. The publication received over 10,000 responses to an online survey conducted by Proof Insights. The survey ran from July to August 2024 and asked readers to rate their favorite places across the South. Real estate in ILM: New Hanover's top 10 most expensive homes sold in 2024 Wilmington was voted the No. 13 city in the South. Southern Living also praised eateries including Indochine, Britt's Donut Shop and Seabird. Asheville was North Carolina's only other entry on the list, with Southern Living noting how residents and community leaders have banded together to help the city bounce back following the devastation of Hurricane Helene.
