India vs England 2nd Test: Shubman Gill's incredible 269 takes India to 587 before England lose flurry of early wickets

BIRMINGHAM: Around 20 minutes prior to lunch on the second day's play,
Ravindra Jadeja
dabbed offspinner Shoaib Bashir to short third-man, only for Chris Woakes to laboriously get to the ball and stop it.
Jadeja called for a run but Shubman Gill, at the other end, turned the single down.
The stump mic caught Jadeja saying to Gill, 'Arey, woh log so gaye hain (they are in slumber)!'

This little episode sums up Gill's marathon knock of 269 and how it utterly deflated England on Thursday. Gill's knock eventually ended rather innocuously off a half-hearted pull to square-leg in the last session of the day.
By then he had ensured that his regal performance would be etched in bold letters in India's Test history. His talent, timing and temperament were all on view.
Supreme confidence, record feat: Shubman Gill's double ton impresses Ravindra Jadeja
The Indian captain's faultless presence at the crease for all six sessions, over the first two days, ensured that England were pinned firmly to the mat. After India were bowled out for 587, Akash Deep, replacing Jasprit Bumrah, snared Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope for ducks in the slip cordon to confirm India's dominance in the second Test.
By stumps, England were 77/3 as Mohammed Siraj dismissed Zak Crawley for 19 at first slip.
The late evening burst by the Indian pacers was a pleasant departure from the norm on this pitch.

Do you think Shubman Gill will continue to dominate in the upcoming matches?
Yes, definitely
Maybe
No
Resuming the day at 310/5, with Gill and Jadeja batting on 114 and 41 respectively, Edgbaston was buzzing in anticipation of another day of exciting cricket. Instead, Gill owned the day and turned it into a one-sided contest in favour of India.
Brydon Carse's scrambled seam delivery beat Gill's outside edge after 50 minutes of play, and that was the most England could trouble the unflappable Gill. Gill's doggedness against England's disciplined bowling on Day One made way for his customary flair on Day Two.
He scored 155 runs off 171 balls, hitting 30 imperious boundaries and three effortless sixes. His stature as a Test batter grew with each minute he spent at the crease.
'We're going for the win': Jeetan Patel backs England despite massive deficit
As the innings rolled on, Gill cruised past milestones set by some of India's best batters over the last three generations.
He first surpassed
Sunil Gavaskar
as India's highest-scorer in an innings in England, followed by Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli's respective Test highest scores of 248 not out and 254 not out. He is now one of only five batters to have scored a double hundred in both ODIs and Tests.
Gill had berated himself after throwing his wicket away on 147 in the previous Test at Headingley. He made ample amends at Edgbaston. He stitched a 203-run sixth-wicket partnership with Jadeja, followed by a 144-run seventh-wicket stand with Washington Sundar.
It's not often that one witnesses such a dominant performance by a visiting batter in England.

Ishan Kishan Takes Off Gloves, Bowls Off-Spin And Leg-Spin For County Team In Same Over

Out-of-sorts Indian wicket-keeper batter, Ishan Kishan, was surprisingly seen bowling for his County side, Nottinghamshire. In the same over, Ishan bowled both off-spin and leg-spin, with some of the deliveries looking extremely ordinary. Ishan, who is a character that likes to enjoy himself, be it while wicket-keeping, batting, or fielding, had a smile on his face while he was bowling. Some of his deliveries, however, also left the commentators struggling to control their laughter. Ishan started the over by bowling off-spin, but later shifted to leg-spin. Ishan was roped in by Nottinghamshire as Kyle Verreynne 's replacement while the World Test Championship-winning South African is away playing a two-Test series in Zimbabwe. He will be eligible for selection for the upcoming Championship fixtures against Yorkshire at Trent Bridge and Somerset in Taunton. "I'm feeling very excited to get my first taste of playing county cricket in England, and it will be a great chance to showcase my skills. I want to make sure I am the best cricketer I can be, and playing in English conditions will really help me to learn new skills. "Trent Bridge is such a famous ground that is well-known in India and around the world, and I am really excited that I will be playing there," said Kishan. At present, Ishan isn't in the scheme of things as far as Test cricket is concerned. The wicket-keeper batter hasn't played for India in any format since November 2023.

Rs 9,999 tickets to lowering spice levels for international athletes — how Neeraj the organiser spent the last few ahead of NC Classic

That is why Saturday's event could be significant for Indian athletics. If Chopra winning gold in Tokyo was the country's athletics equivalent of the Moon Landing event, meets like the one on Saturday could help normalise it in the years to come. "There are so many international competitions in countries like Germany every week — A, B, C category events," he said. "That's what I want here in India, at least four to five world-class meets every year. Our athletes should get these opportunities and the public should watch them live. "I never thought such an event would take place. I am at peace... I'm able to give something back to India." There's also the question of legacy and competitions like these go a long way in securing it. While this event has the blessings of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) — a pre-requisite — and WA were quickly on board, Chopra's name will provide an added legitimacy to it. 2016 Olympic champ, Thomas Rohler, and 2015 World Champ, Julius Yego, may have come even otherwise but a personal invitation from Chopra sealed it. When one of the sport's big personalities calls you, you pack your bags to compete in a land you have never competed in before. That's also true for some of the companies who have sponsored the event. There's a learning partner (Duolingo), a content partner (Snapchat) as well as an outdoor partner (Mera Hoarding). It reflects the kind of trust firms have in the Chopra name that they have all come on board to sponsor an inaugural tournament.

Julius Yego believes 90m throws can be on the cards at NC Classic 2025

Bengaluru: As the Neeraj Chopra Classic gears up its first-ever edition, scheduled for Saturday, the 2016 Olympic silver medallist Julius Yego of Kenya expressed disappointment following the withdrawal of top athletes, including Grenadian star Anderson Peters and backed the strong field to shine with 90m show. Two-time world champion Peters was ruled out of the World Athletics category A javelin event due to an ankle injury just a few days before the competition, with Poland's Cyprian Mrzyglod replacing him in the lineup. Peters' withdrawal came just a day after India's Asian Games silver medallist Kishore Jena was ruled out of the competition due to an ankle injury. His fellow Indian javelin thrower Yash Vir Singh replaced Jena in the final entry list for the comprtition. "It's a shame that Peters was not able to be here. He is a good friend of ours. We really wanted him to compete,' Yego told IANS. 'But then, you know, your health is very important, and I wish him a quick recovery so that he comes back stronger. We made this sport very interesting." Despite Peters' absence, Yego remains upbeat about the competition's quality. "Those of us here are very good athletes. Thomas Rohler has thrown 90m, Neeraj has thrown 90m. The others too have thrown 84m or 85m. They can be able even to do 90m. Who knows, they can even do it tomorrow," he said. Yego, who learned the fundamentals of javelin by watching YouTube videos and has been trailblazing javelin's rise in Africa, signed off by highlighting the larger purpose of the event which is to promote and popularise the javelin in India. 'It's all about enjoying the sport and making javelin more popular in India,' he said. As a World Athletics-sanctioned Gold level meet, the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 becomes India's first-ever international javelin competition. The event is officially sanctioned by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).
