Mount Edgecombe resident aims to make a splash for charity

The Citizen13-06-2025
MOUNT Edgecombe resident and triathlete Glen Gore is taking on the Oceans 8 Charity Swim at Vetch's Beach, Durban, this weekend.
Since its launch two years ago, the event has raised over R1.7m, directly benefiting 23 charities working in education, environmental conservation, and community upliftment.
It's for this reason that Gore has decided to take on the 4 Mile swim fundraiser.
'This will be the second event overall. I did my first Oceans 8 swim last year and it was such good fun so I decided to come back again. I love swimming and if I can combine swimming and charitable work, it's a win in my books,' he said.

Gore will be competing in the 50-59 age category.
He added his background in triathlons has helped him gear up for this event.
'Generally I train all year round so there was no specific preparation in terms of training for this one. It is fairly simple for me, wake up, go swim as fast as possible and have fun. The distance is very manageable, it's the speed at which we do it that makes it interesting,' he said.
After the open water swim, there will be a number of other events on Gore's calendar, including the KZN Duathlon Champs at the end of June, followed by several run and cycle events.
With the Oceans 8 Charity Swim event taking place over two days this weekend (June 14 and June 15), participants can find a mile to suit their style, with distances from 1, 4, 8 and 16-mile swims on offer.

WATCH: Kings Park Swimming Pool to reopen in July 2026

THE R42m upgrade underway at Kings Park Swimming Pool is set to be completed by the end of July 2026. That's the word from acting head of the Parks, Leisure and Cemeteries Unit Dr Zakhi Mkhize who led journalists on a walkabout through the municipal pool on Friday morning. The municipal-run pool was closed in November 2024 after strong winds damaged the roof. Earlier this year the City said repairs to the pool would be completed by the end of April but that deadline has since been moved to 2026. 'Key improvements include the installation of 1500 LUX lighting, glass window replacements, non-slip coatings for stairs and paving, upgrades to walkway structures and handrails, a complete overhaul of two canteen areas, plastering and painting, new signage, a scoreboard, and diving boards,' the City said in a statement in April this year. The pool is the only swimming facility in SA with a World Aquatics accreditation and is recognised by the International Olympic Committee for hosting international water sports competitions. The swimming complex also features both indoor and outdoor facilities. For more from Northglen News, follow us on Facebook , X or Instagram. Cyclists conquer mammoth 100km route

AMANZIMTOTI Cycling Club riders rose to the challenge of the annual Amashova Durban Classic, one of South Africa's iconic road races, on July 20. The 100km route saw the cyclists start in Pietermaritzburg and finish along the Durban beachfront, testing their skill, stamina and endurance. Also read: Umgababa sailor launches sailing venture Chairman of the club, Barry Walker, said nine members of the club completed the event. Jannie Els claimed a second podium finish in the grand master category, showing that age is no barrier as long as there is dedicated training and commitment. Anton van der Merwe put in a solid ride to earn third place in masters, while one of the club's rising stars, Sikle Bester, grabbed third in the U23 category, also managing to finish as the 10th female rider overall. 'The race got underway in chilly, misty conditions in Pietermaritzburg, but temperatures began to rise as the riders made their way toward the coast. However, the final stretch into Durban came with a sting in the tail, a steady easterly headwind made the closing kilometers tough for even the strongest legs. Well done to all who represented our club. Your efforts continue to make us proud,' said Walker. For more South Coast Sun news, follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. 'Rich Hilton College parents': TikToker mocks SA's most expensive school

A popular schoolboy rugby TikTok account has mocked the parents of Hilton College, who recently came under fire over their 'flashy' display of wealth at a recent derby day. The KwaZulu-Natal boarding school is the most expensive school in South Africa, with an annual tuition of close to half a million rand. On TikTok, the popular fitness and schoolboy rugby account @adafitfans took a jab at Hilton College's recent headlines. The account posted an AI-generated skit of parents of the most expensive school bragging about splurging cash on designer tents, helicopters, and even comparing themselves to the Springboks. This included hiring five-star hosting and catering services that showcased lavish displays of food like sushi, biltong, and couture cakes. The principal also criticised the parents for not cleaning up after the events. He wrote: 'When hospitality and generosity became self-serving displays of opulence, and began to pull away from what we aspire to be as a community. The principal added: 'Next year, can we ditch the opulence in favour of a wholesome hospitality devoid of showmanship and loud extravagance?. 'When the extravagance stretches into overconsumption, the message we send to our children is wrong'. Hilton College came under fire over its recent rugby derby day.
