US, Indonesia agree to framework for negotiating reciprocal trade deal

The United States and Indonesia yesterday agreed to a framework for negotiating an agreement on reciprocal trade under which the latter will eliminate nearly 99 per cent of tariff barriers for a full range of US industrial, food and agricultural products. The agreement will be finalised in the coming weeks. The US and Indonesia have agreed to a framework for negotiating a reciprocal trade deal under which the latter will eliminate 99 per cent of tariff barriers for many US industrial, food and agricultural items. The deal will be finalised in the coming weeks. The US will reduce its reciprocal tariffs to 19 per cent and facilitative rules of origin will ensure the gains accrue mainly to these two nations. The United States will reduce to 19 per cent its reciprocal tariffs on goods from Indonesia, and may also identify certain commodities that are not naturally available or domestically produced in the United States for a further reduction in the reciprocal tariff rate. The Agreement on Reciprocal Trade will provide exporters on both sides unprecedented access to each other's markets, a joint statement released by the White House said. The agreement will build upon their long-standing economic relationship, including the US-Indonesia Trade and Investment Framework Agreement, signed on July 16, 1996. Both sides will negotiate facilitative rules of origin that ensure that the benefits of the agreement accrue primarily to these two countries, the statement said. They will work together to address Indonesia's non-tariff barriers that affect bilateral trade and investment in priority areas, including exempting US companies and originating goods from local content requirements; removing certain labeling requirements; and taking steps to resolve many long-standing intellectual property issues. Indonesia will work to address barriers for US exports, including through the removal of import restrictions or licensing requirements on US remanufactured goods or their parts; the elimination of pre-shipment inspection or verification requirements on imports of US goods; and the adoption and implementation of good regulatory practices. Indonesia has also committed to address barriers impacting digital trade, services and investment. Indonesia will provide certainty regarding the ability to transfer personal data out of its territory to the United States. Indonesia will adopt and implement a prohibition on the import of goods produced by forced or compulsory labour; amend its labour laws to ensure that workers' rights to freedom of association and collective bargaining are fully protected; and strengthen enforcement of its labour laws. It has also committed to adopt and maintain high levels of environmental protection and to effectively enforce its environmental laws. Fibre2Fashion News Desk (DS)

Trump announces trade deal with Japan, Philippines

US President Donald Trump has announced a trade framework with Japan, imposing a 15-per cent reciprocal tariff on goods imported from the latter. 'We just completed a massive Deal with Japan, perhaps the largest Deal ever made. Japan will invest, at my direction, $550 Billion Dollars into the United States, which will receive 90 per cent of the Profits,' Trump posted on his social networking platform Truth Social. President Donald Trump has announced a trade framework with Japan, imposing a 15-per cent reciprocal tariff on goods imported from the US. Japan will invest $550 into the US, which will receive 90 per cent of the profits, Trump posted on Truth Social. He also announced a trade deal with the Philippines that would impose a tariff of 19 per cent on its goods, while US items would face no tariffs. 'This Deal will create Hundreds of Thousands of Jobs—There has never been anything like it,' he noted. The United States 'will continue to always have a great relationship with the Country of Japan,' he added. Japan would open its economy to American autos and rice, the President's post said. The 15-per cent tariff on goods imported from Japan is less than the 25-per cent rate that Trump, in a recent letter to Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, said would be levied beginning August 1. Important details of the deal, however, remained unclear from his social media post. Trump also announced a trade framework with the Philippines that would impose a tariff of 19 per cent on its goods, while American products exported to that country would face no tariffs. He also reaffirmed his 19-per cent tariffs on Indonesia. The United States ran a $69.4 billion trade imbalance on goods with Japan last year, according to the US Census Bureau. It had a trade imbalance of $17.9 billion with Indonesia and an imbalance of $4.9 billion with the Philippines. Fibre2Fashion News Desk (DS)
