Mercedes-Benz on Wednesday pulled its earnings guidance for 2025 amid uncertainty over the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs on car imports as the German automaker posted a sharply lower first-quarter profit. The premium automaker said that "current volatility" from tariffs and the possible impact "in particular on customer behaviour and demand, is too high to reliably assess the business development for the remainder of the year."Assuming that tariffs remain in place, Mercedes said, its profits will be "negatively impacted."Mercedes faces challenges in all its major markets, from Trump's U.S. auto tariffs, to fierce competition from fast-moving rivals in China and tough new CO2 emissions targets in the European Union. On Tuesday, Volvo Cars withdrew its earnings forecast for the next two years, citing uncertainty over the impact of Trump's tariffs.Mercedes told analysts at the end of March it had been stockpiling inventory in the U.S. market to mitigate the impact of tariffs. The German premium automaker saw car and van sales drop 7% in the first quarter, led by 10% declines in both Europe and China, though sales were up 1% in the U.S. market. The company's sales fell 3% last year, led by a 7% drop in China. The German luxury carmaker reported a first-quarter profit margin for its car segment of 7.3%, down from 9% in the same period last year.Group earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) plunged 41% year on year to 2.3 billion euros ($2.62 billion) in the first three months of 2025.As part of its bid to regain lost market share in China, Mercedes last week unveiled a new all-electric luxury limousine van series called "Vision V" at the Shanghai car show. The vans will have lounge chairs that can fold down into a bed and huge screens that can turn the interior into a private cinema or karaoke bar.

Mini US trade deal likely as genetically modified door ajar

New Delhi: An interim trade deal with the US could materialise in the ongoing round of talks, with India becoming receptive to imports of certain genetically modified (GM) farm products used in animal feed but holding firm on restricting imports of GM corn and soyabean. The fifth round of talks for the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) are currently being held in Washington. 'There will be an interim deal first, be it first tranche or second tranche, before a BTA,' said an official. 'We will close multiple deals as and when they finalise. We will be doing our job. Rest we will leave to others,' the official said, without elaborating. Access to Labour-intensive Industries India is demanding greater market access for labour-intensive industries such as textiles and electronics while the US wants steep cuts in tariffs across sectors including cars and access for its dairy and farm products. 'We aim to package a deal before the Quad summit,' said the official cited above. Live Events India will host the 2025 summit of the four-member Quad grouping, also comprising the US, Australia, and Japan, later this year. Trump is set to attend the summit. The US has announced tariffs on several nations from August 1 including those with whom it has finalised trade deals. As per the trade pact with Vietnam, the US has imposed a 40% duty on transshipped goods. With Indonesia, it has sought commitments to purchase $15 billion in American energy, $4.5 billion in American agricultural products, and 50 Boeing jets. Conditions related to India continuing to buy Russian crude oil could be proposed in the BTA talks. Trump, on July 14, proposed 100% tariffs on Russian oil buyers, followed by NATO issuing a warning to India, China, and Brazil that they could face harsh secondary sanctions — including 100% tariffs — if they kept doing business with Russia without pressuring Moscow to start peace talks. The US has already proposed a 10% tariff on all BRICS exports, besides levying a 50% tariff on Brazil, partly for pressuring platform X to remove content. 'India, which also makes takedown requests, could be targeted next. More such tariffs could follow,' said a New Delhi-based trade expert, adding that even a trade deal will not guarantee protection due to Washington's uncertain approach.

Trump Says US "Very Close To Deal With India" As Tariff Deadline Looms

Washington: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday hinted at reaching a new trade deal with India soon. While adding "maybe", he said that currently the US is in negotiations with India. Trump, while speaking to reporters during a bilateral meeting with Bahrain's Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, emphasised that August 1 will be a significant day, when a lot of money will come into his country. "... We've brought in over $100 billion. The tariffs haven't kicked in significantly, except for automobiles and steel. August 1st is when a very substantial money comes into our country. We've made deals with numerous places. We had one yesterday," Trump said. "We have another one (deal) coming up, maybe with India... We're in negotiation. When I send out a letter, that's a deal... The best deal we can make is to send out a letter, and the letter says that you'll pay 30%, 35%, 25%, 20%... We have some pretty good deals to announce... We're very close to a deal with India where they open it up," Trump added. The US President on Tuesday said the United States is working on a deal that gives it access to the Indian markets. He also announced a new trade deal with Indonesia, after which the latter will face a reduced tariff rate of 19 per cent. Announcing progress on the India part, Trump stated, "We're going to have access into India. And you have to understand, we had no access into any of these countries. Our people couldn't go in. And now we're getting access because of what we're doing with the tariffs." The ongoing bilateral trade talks (BTA) negotiations by India and the United States (US) are progressing as per the decisions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, said the government officials on Tuesday. "Our team is back in the US for carrying out the fifth round of negotiations on the bilateral trade agreement, so that agreement is progressing as per the decisions of our leaders and as per the terms of reference decided between the two countries," the government officials told ANI.

UK and Germany to Pledge to Defend Each Other in Reset of Ties

(Bloomberg) -- UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will sign a new Anglo-German treaty in London on Thursday that includes a commitment to assist each other in case of armed attack. Starmer and Merz's predecessor, Social Democrat Olaf Scholz, laid the groundwork for the pact at a meeting last August in Berlin, when the British premier called it 'part of a wider reset grounded in a new spirit of cooperation.' Conservative leader Merz has made clear his regret over the UK quitting the European Union and has vowed to join forces with Starmer to confront challenges like Donald Trump's trade onslaught and the war on Ukraine. His trip to London comes a week after French President Emmanuel Macron made the first state visit by a European leader to the UK since Brexit, helping to reinforce warmer Anglo-French relations. Here's what to look out for from Thursday's meeting, when Starmer and Merz are due to sign the new treaty during a ceremony at London's Victoria and Albert Museum: The mutual defense pledge is a reaction both to an increasingly aggressive Russia and growing concern among European allies about US commitment to NATO under President Trump, according to a senior German official. At the same time, it's not meant to be a substitute for the principle of collective defense at the heart of NATO's founding treaty, known as Article 5, added the official, who asked not to be identified discussing confidential deliberations. For Germany, the defense element is particularly significant because the UK is, together with France, one of Europe's two nuclear powers. Germany doesn't possess its own nuclear warheads, but benefits from the protective 'umbrella' the US has spread over the continent. Atomic weapons are not explicitly mentioned in the new treaty, according to the German official. Starmer and Merz will also make a commitment to deliver a new long-range missile system — the Deep Precision Strike capability — in the next decade, according to a statement from Starmer's office. It will have a range of more than 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles) and help boost the UK and European defense sectors via 'significant industrial investment.' The treaty also contains measures relating to trade, transport and irregular migration, part of an effort to minimize the negative effects of Brexit. Alongside the pact, Germany is expected to commit to making it illegal to facilitate irregular migration to the UK, with the law change to be adopted by the end of the year, Starmer's office said. Following the recent deal between Britain and the US, Merz and Starmer will also discuss the ongoing trade talks between Brussels and Washington, according to the German official. Merz has called for a swift EU-US trade accord and cited Trump's deal with Starmer as a potential model. Thursday's events will be a welcome distraction from domestic difficulties for both leaders. Starmer, for his part, has been forced into a spate of policy U-turns in recent weeks that have compromised his government's hard-earned reputation for fiscal discipline. 'The international stage is clearly where he is happiest at the moment,' said Gemma Loomes, a lecturer in comparative politics at Keele University. 'The treaty symbolizes his commitment to rebuilding European relations post-Brexit but also allows him to temporarily put his domestic troubles to one side.' Merz, meanwhile, is dealing with an increasingly fractious ruling coalition, with his conservative CDU/CSU bloc and the Social Democrats at odds over issues ranging from welfare reforms to judicial appointments and already drawing comparisons with the infighting that dogged Scholz's administration. Beyond the treaty, the UK and Germany will also unveil commercial investments worth more than £200 million ($268 million) that will create around 600 new jobs, according to Starmer's office.
