Two-wheeler riders urged to avoid being in the ‘blind spot'
In connection with the death of a food delivery executive who died after a private bus rammed his bike at South Kalamassery on Monday, the Transport Commissioner said that this might have occurred since the biker was in the blind spot on the front left side of the bus when the accident occurred. CCTV cameras in the vicinity would have to be inspected to assess whether the bus was being driven beyond the permitted speed.
Mr. Nagaraju said that an AI-based software to streamline the time schedule of buses is on the anvil, to prevent the overlapping of bus timings when buses from multiple starting points converge on arterial roads in the city. 'This will help rein in reckless and competitive driving. In Kochi, around 500 (city permit) private buses operate. A good share of them converge at such points/roads within a short time span, especially during four hours each in the morning and evening peak timings.'
He added that all buses must stop only at the designated bus stops. They must leave as soon as passengers disembark or board. Sadly, many buses halt at stops for five minutes, using bus stops as bus stands. Aimed at ensuring accountability among bus crew, a police clearance certificate (PCC) has been made mandatory from August 23, he said, on the sidelines of a function at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium metro station, after launching the metro's UPI-integrated ticket vending machine initiative.

Nearly 400k SIMs axed for fraud
The telecom department's Financial Risk Indicator (FRI) has blacklisted 300,000-400,000 SIMs used in fraudulent schemes. This initiative flags 2,000 high-risk numbers daily, aiding UPI platforms in preventing crores worth of suspicious transactions. Banks are integrating FRI to reduce fraud response times, with institutions like PhonePe and HDFC Bank actively using the platform to prevent fraud. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Mumbai: The telecom department's latest initiative to categorise high-risk fraud accounts has caught and blacklisted 300,000-400,000 telecom SIMs used in fraudulent schemes, show government Financial Risk Indicator (FRI), launched in May, is now daily flagging 2,000 high-risk phone numbers that may be involved in investment or job scams, and other fraudulent activities. More SIMs on the network are then identified using artificial intelligence-based pattern matching. This has helped UPI platforms like Paytm , GPay and PhonePe prevent suspicious transactions worth crores of rupees in the past month, a senior official at the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) told July, banking regulator Reserve Bank of India issued an advisory to all commercial banks, co-operative banks and payments banks to integrate the FRI with their system."As a result, time-to-action on fraud accounts has been reduced to a few hours," the DoT official said. "This also signals increasing maturity of DoT's Digital Intelligence Platform which was launched with the aim of real-time data exchange among stakeholders."Banks and financial institutions are using the FRI to take preventive measures, such as declining suspicious transactions, issuing alerts or warnings to customers, and delaying transactions flagged as high system's utility has already been demonstrated with leading institutions such as PhonePe, Punjab National Bank ICICI Bank , Paytm and India Post Payments Bank actively using the platform, the telecom department had said part of this initiative, digital fraud prevention platform MFilterIt has deployed AI-based honeypots on X, Instagram and Facebook which scrape social media to find and interact with such scam accounts. Nearly 125 such accounts are discovered and flagged by a single AI bot daily, the company said."These are investment scam fraudsters which may or may not be using mule accounts," said Dhiraj Gupta, cofounder and chief technology officer at MFilterIt. "We are tracking social media for these fraudsters who post tall claims like 'double your money in 6hrs' and then our bot interacts with these people posing as genuine investors. This persuades the criminals to reveal their information like UPI ID or barcode," he FRI represents a vital pre-emptive strike against fraud, said Gaurav Gupta, senior product manager at digital identity verification agency Signzy.

9 cybercriminals arrested from Jharkhands East Singhbhum district
Jamshedpur, Aug 4 (PTI) Six cybercriminals, including five teenagers, were arrested from Jharkhand's East Singhbhum district while attempting to defraud people online, police said on Monday. The arrests were made during a raid conducted at Kharaighutu forest under Kowali police station on Sunday afternoon by a team led by DSP (Musabani) Sandip Bhagat, following intelligence inputs received by SSP Piyush Pandey. According to a police statement, the group had been luring victims from across the country using Telegram and WhatsApp by assigning fake online tasks such as Google reviews, game ratings, and other promotional activities. The team caught the six youths red-handed while they were using mobile phones in the forest. Though they tried to flee upon spotting the police, all were nabbed after a short chase, the statement said. Police recovered nine mobile phones, including several iPhones, from the accused. Upon examination, multiple bank accounts, UPI IDs, and messaging app handles were found to be connected to fraudulent transactions. In an another incident, three cybercriminals were arrested from Rakhamines railway station. According to the statement, the trio were picked up after repeated complaints were registered by people from across the country.
