Air raid sirens sounded for 77 seconds in various Palestinian cities in the West Bank, marking the anniversary of the Nakba.
The commemoration took place amid ongoing Israeli actions in the Gaza Strip, leading to forced displacements and accusations of genocide, with more than 52,000 Palestinians killed since late 2023, according to the Wafa news agency.
Israeli actions in the West Bank have resulted in the displacement of 40,000 people from the Jenin and Tulkarm refugee camps, an increase in settler attacks, home raids, and the banning of UNRWA, the agency responsible for providing relief to Palestinian refugees.
Wafa reported that thousands of Palestinians participated in a rally in Ramallah on Wednesday, carrying Palestinian flags, black banners, and door keys, symbols of the right of return.
Mahmoud Al-Aloul, deputy chairman of the Fatah Movement, said Palestinians mark the Nakba 'under difficult circumstances.'
He said: 'There is a more severe and painful catastrophe currently being experienced by our people in the Gaza Strip, where the occupation is claiming the lives of children and women, and is carrying out massacres, siege, and starvation.
'The massacres are extending to the West Bank governorates, and settlers are wreaking terror against citizens, their land, and Islamic and Christian holy sites, under the protection of the occupation forces,' he added. 'This is in addition to the abuse of prisoners, which has resulted in the martyrdom of dozens of them in occupation prisons.'
During the Nakba in 1948 Jewish militias drove about 750,000 Palestinians from towns and villages, events that led to the establishment of modern-day Israel. Palestinian refugees were settled in UN-established camps in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria. The majority of the families' towns and villages are in Israeli territory.

Gaza student leaves for France over antisemitic posts row
A student from Gaza who had been studying in France on a scholarship left for Qatar Sunday, ordered out over anti-Semitic comments found on her social media accounts, the foreign ministry said. Foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot 'stressed the unacceptable nature of the comments made by Ms. Nour Attaalah, a Gazan student, before she entered French territory,' said the ministry statement. 'Given their seriousness, Ms. Attaalah could not remain on French territory. She left France today to go to Qatar to continue her studies there,' it added. The young woman, who received a student visa and a government scholarship as part of a program for Gazan students, had been due to join Sciences Po Lille in the fall. She arrived in France on July 11, according to a French diplomatic source. But social media posts from the past two years calling for the killing of Jews, since deleted, were discovered. That led to a judicial investigation for condoning terrorism, and an inquiry to determine why the posts had not been detected in advance. AFP was unable to confirm the screen shots attributed to her by internet users and media outlets, but Sciences Po Lille said Wednesday that her social media comments had been confirmed, without elaborating. Barrot said Friday that France was freezing all its student evacuation programs from Gaza pending the outcome of the investigation into how the posts had been missed. The foreign ministry would not say how many students have been affected, citing privacy reasons. France has allowed in several hundred students from Gaza since the start of the war between Israel and the Hamas movement.

Palestinian administrative prisoner dies in Israeli jail in ‘unknown' circumstances
LONDON: A 20-year-old Palestinian prisoner died on Sunday in an Israeli jail after nearly three months since his arrest, reported the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners Society. Ahmad Said Saleh Tazazaa, from the town of Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank, was detained on May 6. He had been sentenced to administrative detention, a practice that allows Israeli authorities to hold individuals in prison without trial for several months, with the possibility of indefinite extensions. The groups said that the circumstances surrounding Tazazaa's death in the Megiddo prison 'remain unknown.' His death brings the total number of identified Palestinian prisoners and detainees who have died in Israeli detention since October 2023 to 76 individuals, including 46 from the occupied Gaza Strip. The last two years have been among the deadliest for Palestinian prisoners, according to the commission and the PPS. Since Israel's illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories began in 1967, 313 political prisoners have died while in detention. Israeli authorities have arrested 18,500 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023.
