Bihar: Polling officials involve in Electoral Rolls Revision campaign to receive Rs 6,000 as honorarium
The ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign of the electoral rolls in Bihar is progressing rapidly and recognizing the efforts of the Polling station officials, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Bihar has announced a special incentive of Rs 6,000 for each. This additional honorarium is aimed at acknowledging their hard work and commitment during the intensive revision process."The Rs 6,000 incentive has been approved as a mark of appreciation for the tireless service of polling staff during this crucial campaign," said a statement issued by the CEO's office.
Apart from this, SIR in Bihar is underway in full swing with the Booth Level Officers (BLOs), BLO Supervisors, all the election officials, BLAs appointed by the political parties and the volunteers working tirelessly at the grassroots level to ensure that no eligible elector is left out, according to a press release by the Election Commission of India's (ECI). As per the release, as of July 5 at 6.00 PM, 1,04,16 545 Enumeration Forms, i.e. 13.19 per cent of the total of 7,89,69,844 (nearly 7.90 crore) electors in Bihar who are enrolled as of June 24, 2025, have been received.
The percentage of forms distributed has also increased to 93.57 per cent, with 7,38,89,333 forms already distributed. 77,895 BLOs are going house-to-house to help the electors fill out their Enumeration Forms and collect them. In a large number of cases, the BLOs are taking live pictures of the electors and uploading them, saving the electors the trouble of getting their pictures taken. The partially filled forms are also available for download on the ECI portal (https://voters.eci.gov.in) as well as on the ECINET App, and the filled forms can be uploaded by the elector themselves on the ECINET App. Additionally, 20,603 BLOs are being appointed for the smooth and timely completion of the process. Nearly 4 lakh volunteers, including government officials, NCC cadets, NSS members, etc., are also working in the field to facilitate the elderly, PwDs, sick and vulnerable populations in the SIR process. Besides, 239 EROs, 963 AEROs, 38 DEOs and the CEO of the state are at the ground level to facilitate the electors to submit their forms. 1,54,977 Booth Level Agents (BLAs) appointed by various political parties are also providing active support in the SIR process, as per the release.

Congress targets govt, SEBI on Jane Street ‘market manipulation'
The Congress on Tuesday hit out at the SEBI and the government for not taking timely action against US algorithm trading firm Jane Street for 'stock market manipulation'. Congress head of social media department Supriya Shrinate said Jane Street had in 2024 admitted in a US court it made $1 billion in India in 2023 from the Indian options market by exploiting 'inefficiencies'. 'By 2024, that amount grew to $2.3 billion, which was 11.2% of all the money it made around the world. But SEBI didn't act on this information, it was only in February 2025 that SEBI issued a mild warning, a cautionary letter to Jane Street, warning against its questionable trading patterns. But the firm continued its manipulative trades till as late as May 2025,' Shrinate said. Criticising SEBI, she said its 'report shows that 93% of retail investors lost money in derivatives trading between FY2021 and FY2024'. 'In FY2024 alone, 91.1% of traders lost Rs 52,400 crore,' she said. She said instead of protecting small investors, SEBI turned a blind eye to 'rampant fraudulent activities'.

Punjab bill proposes life term if acts of sacrilegelead to riots, deaths
Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann (File photo) CHANDIGARH: The Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government has drafted a stringent new law on sacrilege, proposing prison terms of up to life for desecration of holy scriptures and holding guardians liable if juvenile or differently abled people on their watch commit the offence. Titled Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scripture(s) Act, 2025, the bill prescribes a minimum sentence of 10 years for sacrilege. If such acts lead to communal violence causing death or damage to property, punishment could range from 20 years to the remainder of natural life, plus fines between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 20 lakh. Parole or furlough will be barred for convicts receiving the highest punishment or defaulting on fines. A second or repeat conviction may result in life imprisonment or incarceration for the convict's natural life. Those tasked with religious duties - face the harshest punishment if found guilty under the proposed legislation. The draft defines sacrilege as any act of "insult, dishonour, damage, defacing, disfiguring, de-colouring, defiling, decomposing, burning, breaking, or tearing" of sacred texts, or any act intended to cause such damage. Holy scriptures listed include Sri Guru Granth Sahib, Srimad Bhagavad Gita, Quran Sharif, and the Bible. The bill mandates three to five years of jail and up to Rs 3 lakh fine for attempted sacrilege.

Tur dal price crash engineered by Centre, says Surjewala
Bengaluru: Congress national general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala Tuesday said the distress of tur dal farmers in Karnataka is due to the Centre's duty-free import policy that triggered a price crash and accused the BJP-led govt of causing a loss of Rs 1,550 crore to farmers through its flawed minimum support price (MSP) policy. "This price crash is not an accident. It is a direct outcome of Modi govt's policies engineered in Delhi, not a drought in Karnataka," said Surjewala. "This is economic sabotage of farmers of Karnataka and Maharashtra, which together contribute 50% of India's tur dal production. The problem also lies in the Centre announcing MSP but not procuring enough. The ministry of agriculture's own data shows that in 2022-23, India's farmers produced 276.9 lakh tonnes of pulses but the Modi govt purchased only 1.2 lakh tonnes at MSP. This shows that MSP of pulses is a farce." He said in five years since May 2021, the Centre allowed duty-free import of tur dal. The last notification was issued on Jan 20 this year, making import of the pulse duty-free until March 31 next year. He said the Karnataka govt had demanded an MSP of Rs 16,548 per quintal for 2025-26, considering the cost of cultivation — which is Rs 11,032 per quintal — but the Centre has fixed an MSP of Rs 8,000 per quintal.
