LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -Monterrey booked a spot in the knockout rounds of the Club World Cup with a thumping 4-0 win over Urawa Red Diamonds at the Rose Bowl on Wednesday to claim second place in Group E and set up a last 16 meeting with Borussia Dortmund.
Three goals in eight first-half minutes sent Monterrey on their way to victory, with stunning long-range strikes from Nelson Deossa and Jesus Corona coming either side of German Berterame's cool finish.
Deossa put Monterrey in front on the half-hour mark with a swerving shot from 35 yards and Berterame doubled the advantage four minutes later.
Corona added the third with the pick of the goals from distance in the 38th minute before Berterame added the fourth in second-half stoppage time.
The win, coupled with Inter Milan's 2-0 victory over River Plate, means Monterrey finish second and will take on Dortmund in Atlanta on Tuesday.

Real Madrid midfielder Bellingham undergoes successful shoulder surgery

REAL MADRID midfielder Jude Bellingham has successfully undergone surgery to address a long-standing shoulder dislocation issue, the Spanish club said on Wednesday. Bellingham has been managing the injury since 2023, playing with his shoulder strapped, but the 22-year-old decided to go under the knife after Real Madrid's campaign at the Club World Cup, where they lost to Paris St Germain in the semi-finals. "Bellingham will now undergo a period of rehabilitation, prior to returning to training and starting his recovery," Real Madrid said in a statement. The club did not give a timeline on his return but Spanish media reported the England international could miss two to three months of action and potentially return in October.

Real Madrid confirm Lucas Vazquez departure after 23 trophies

REAL Madrid confirmed the departure of long-serving defender Lucas Vazquez after his contract expired. The club extended his deal briefly to include the Club World Cup in the United States, where he made his final appearances. Vazquez, 34, spent nearly his entire career at Real Madrid, except for a loan spell at Espanyol in the 2014-15 season. Over his tenure, he played 402 matches and won 23 trophies, including five Champions League titles and four La Liga triumphs. 'Vazquez exemplarily represents the values of Real Madrid, which has made him one of the most beloved players by our fans,' said club president Florentino Perez. '(He) symbolises the hard work, perseverance, humility, and winning spirit essential to succeed in this shirt.' Originally a winger, Vazquez adapted to a defensive role in later years, becoming a reliable squad player. In an emotional farewell video, he said, 'I leave Real Madrid but Real Madrid will never leave me.' - AFP
