A secret room full of cash, gold biscuits & more: What Odisha vigilance found from house of forest officer whose salary was Rs 70K
officials unearthed a hidden treasure trove at the residence of Rama Chandra Nepak, a Deputy Ranger in the Jeypore Forest Range, whose monthly net salary is just Rs 69,680.
During extensive raids conducted on Friday, officials discovered over Rs 1.44 crore in cash, 1.5 kg of gold, 4.63 kg of silver, and multiple high-value assets, including two premium plots in Jeypore town. The most shocking discovery was a secret chamber inside Flat No. 510 of the Golden Height Residential Apartment in Jeypore, which concealed approximately Rs 1.4 crore in neatly stashed currency notes. Counting machines were brought in to tally the seized cash.

The raids, carried out simultaneously at six different locations linked to Nepak in Koraput and Bhubaneswar, involved six DSPs, five inspectors, nine ASIs, and several support staff. Locations searched included two flats in Jeypore, his office chamber, a building constructed on ancestral land, his in-laws' house, and a Bhubaneswar apartment reportedly owned by his brother.

The vigilance department, acting on allegations of disproportionate assets, is now investigating the source of the massive wealth amassed by Nepak, who began his career as a Village Forest Worker in 1989. He currently holds the post of Deputy Ranger-cum-In-Charge Ranger of the Jeypore Forest Range.

Aside from the secret stash of cash, officers also recovered four gold biscuits, 16 gold coins (each weighing 10 grams), and uncovered bank deposits worth Rs 1.32 crore, raising further questions about the scale of financial irregularities.
Nepak, however, defended himself, claiming that a portion of the assets belonged to his wife and son, who he says are engaged in business. He also attributed the gold and silver to wedding gifts from his and his son's marriage.

Rajamahendravaram: District Revenue Officer (DRO) Seetarama Murthy clarified that children cannot appeal to the Collector against the decision of the Maintenance Tribunal under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. He said only the parents have the right to appeal to the Appellate Tribunal headed by the district collector, while children must approach the civil court if they wish to challenge the order. He made these remarks while presiding over an orientation meeting held on Monday at the PGRS Hall in the Collectorate to raise awareness among district officials about the 2007 Act. Seetarama Murthy described the neglect of elderly parents by their children as an unfortunate and inhumane trend. He informed that under Section 7(1) of the Act, Tribunals are constituted at the divisional level and Appellate Tribunals at the district level. As per Section 4, parents or their representatives can apply for maintenance. He added that the Tribunal also has the power to take up cases suo motu. He further pointed out that under Section 24 of the Act, children who abandon their elderly parents can face imprisonment up to three months, a fine of Rs 5,000, or both. The Act also allows elderly parents to reclaim property previously transferred to their children if they are neglected. Assistant Director of Transgender and Elderly Welfare A.V. Srinivas, who also spoke at the session, said that though the Act was passed in 2007, its rules came into force in 2011. Several recognised old-age homes are functioning in East Godavari district, he noted. He mentioned that elderly parents who are unable to support themselves can claim up to Rs 10,000 per month as maintenance from their children. As per Section 21(2) of the Act, police are responsible for ensuring the safety of the lives and properties of senior citizens. They must also visit elderly persons every two months to assess their welfare, he added. Officials from various departments and staff from the Collectorate attendedthe meeting.

Patra duped of Rs 25L in land fraud case
Bhubaneswar: Odisha Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra was allegedly duped of Rs 25 lakh in a land fraud case, police said on Monday. Patra has lodged a complaint at Dhenkanal Town police station in this regard. When he was a director in a company, Patra had given Rs 25 lakh to a man from Dhenkanal Sadar area to arrange a plot of land, a police officer said. However, the middle-man neither provided Patra with land nor returned his money despite making promises several times. Finally, the minister approached the police on Sunday, the officer said. Terming it as his personal matter, Patra told reporters, 'It was an old case... it happened around four-five years ago when I was serving as a director in a company and had provided the money to buy a plot.' 'As he neither provided a land parcel nor returned the money, I have lodged a complaint, and the police are investigating the case,' he added. The police said a manhunt has been launched to nab the accused.
