JEYPORE/BHUBANESWAR: Deputy ranger of Jeypore forest division Rama Chandra Nepak who grabbed headlines for his eye-popping cash and gold assets was arrested by Vigilance on Saturday. Vigilance said his disproportionate assets amounted to 501 per cent of his know sources of income. Nepak was found in possession of disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 6 crore. Vigilance teams had raided six locations in Jeypore and Bhubaneswar related to the accused. He and his family members were found in possession of gold ornaments/items weighing about 1.504 kg and over Rs 1.43 crore in cash. Assets including bank and insurance deposits to the tune of over Rs 1.33 crore, silver ornaments weighing 4.637 kg, a three-storey building spread over 4,000 sqft, two 2 BHK flats (1,500 sqft each) and two high value plots in Jeypore town, one 3 BHK flat (1,800 sqft) in Raghunathpur area of Bhubaneswar, household articles worth Rs 15.50 lakh and two four-wheelers were found. Koraput Vigilance division SP Rabindra Kumar Panda said, a case against Nepak, his spouse and son was registered after the disclosure of huge property during search operations. However, the investigation is underway as the accused did not reveal anything over such accumulation of properties.

"After a thorough search, inventory, and further inquiry, the income, expenditure, and assets of Nepak, were assessed, revealing that he possessed disproportionate assets amounting to 501% more than his known sources of income," read a vigilance release. Officers said the arrest followed simultaneous searches carried out on Friday at six locations linked to Nepak, including his official residence, flats, and other premises in Koraput, Nabarangpur and Bhubaneswar. Vigilance officers said Rs 1.43 crore cash was recovered from a flat, apart from 1.504kg of gold, 4.637kg of silver, bank and postal deposits exceeding Rs 1.33 crore, and documents relating to a multi-storey building, three flats, and two high-value plots. Officers also seized two cars during the searches. Nepak joined govt service in 1989 as a village forest worker under the social forestry division. Following the merger of divisions, he served in the territorial forest division and rose to the rank of deputy ranger. "The accused failed to satisfactorily account for the disproportionate assets accumulated during his service. Further investigation is underway and more details are awaited," said Rabindra Kumar Panda, SP (vigilance), Jeypore. Nepak was produced in the court of special judge (vigilance) in Jeypore on Saturday.

Anti-corruption Vigilance sleuths arrested Deputy Ranger Rama Chandra Nepak for the possession of Rs 1.43 crore in cash, a multi-storeyed building, three flats, two high-value plots, bank deposits of over Rs 1.33 crore, 1.5 kg of gold, 4.6 kg of silver, two cars, assets he could not account for satisfactorily, an official statement said. 'RC Nepak, Deputy Ranger, Jeypore Forest Range, Koraput has been placed under arrest by Odisha Vigilance and will be forwarded today to the Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Jeypore for possession of disproportionate assets (DA) beyond his known sources of income," the department said in the statement, adding that a case has been registered against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. Investigation into the disproportionate assets case would continue, it said. Though the officer was drawing a gross monthly salary of Rs 76,880 (net Rs 69,680), cash found in his house locker was Rs 1.43 crore. Nepak began his career on March 9, 1989, as a village forest worker under the social forestry division in Koraput. Koraput: Around Rs 1.43 crore in cash, 1.5kg gold ornaments, 4.6kg silver besides Rs 1.33 crore in bank and insurance deposits were unearthed by state vigilance during simultaneous searches at six locations allegedly linked to Rama Chandra Nepak, deputy ranger and in-charge range officer of Jeypore forest range under Jeypore forest division in Koraput district. The searches were conducted on allegations that he possessed disproportionate assets. He was scheduled to retire in Dec. A three-storeyed building measuring around 4,000 square feet at NKT Road in Jeypore town, three residential flats, two high-value plots in Jeypore and several vehicles were also discovered during the searches. Vigilance SP (Jeypore) Rabindra Kumar Panda said searches were conducted by six teams comprising six DSPs, five inspectors, nine ASIs and support staff. "The vigilance technical wing is engaged in detailed measurement and valuation of the recovered assets. More assets may surface as the searches continue," said Panda. Nepak, however, defended himself, claiming that a portion of the assets belonged to his wife and son, who he says are engaged in business. He also attributed the gold and silver to wedding gifts from his and his son's marriage. As the raids continue, the Vigilance department has confirmed that documentation and financial records are still under scrutiny to determine the full extent of the alleged corruption .
