Barcelona are hoping to be the final team to reach the Copa del Rey semi-finals, and they are on course to do as they've gone 4-0 up against Valencia in their quarter-final tie at the Mestalla.
Hansi Flick opted to bring in Eric Garcia, Frenkie de Jong, Fermin Lopez and Ferran Torres to the side that defeated Alaves last weekend, and it was the latter that broke the deadlock against his former club inside the opening three minutes. A quarter of an hour later, he got his and Barcelona's second, and Fermin Lopez would get in on the act soon after to make it 3-0. Now, Ferran has fired home his third of the evening to complete a first half hat-trick.

It has been a quite incredible opening half hour from Barcelona, who have now scored 11 goals against Valencia in 120 minutes of football over the last 11 days. They will certainly be taking their place in the Copa del Rey semi-finals alongside Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Real Sociedad.

Inter Miami may be massive underdog to PSG, but old coach isn't overlooking Messi and Co.

ATLANTA — If Lionel Messi and Inter Miami's cast of former Barcelona stars hope to pull off one of the biggest upsets soccer may ever see against Paris Saint-Germain in the FIFA Club World Cup, they'll have to outsmart one person who may know them all the best. Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Javier Mascherano last raised the Champions League trophy together with Barcelona in 2015 under the leadership of coach Luis Enrique. Ten years later, Enrique reached the sport's mountaintop again, leading Paris Saint-Germain to its first Champions League title last month. Now, they'll reunite again on the same pitch Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium – this time as adversaries with plenty of love and respect at the forefront of their round-of-16 matchup in the Club World Cup. 'I'm sure it's going to be much more difficult than anyone can imagine,' Enrique said Saturday night before the match. 'They have the level. They have the quality. And they are winners. They're players who have won a lot throughout their careers (with) that spirit inside them they've had all their lives. 'Emotionally, it's very difficult to prepare for a game like this.' It'll be Messi's first match against PSG since leaving the French club in July 2023 to join Inter Miami. And he's leading a Major League Soccer club just five years into its existence into a match against the European champions. Inter Miami is the biggest underdog of any team in the Club World Cup round of 16. They have +1050 odds to beat PSG, the heavy favorite at -450, according to BetMGM. But Enrique isn't overlooking the opponent one bit. He knows better. Especially coaching against No. 10 on the other side. 'I had the opportunity to meet Leo Messi at the height of his career. Leo Messi's peak has lasted 10, 15 years – I don't know how long it will last,' Enrique said. 'He is the best soccer player in history – without a doubt.' Enrique still believes Messi, Suarez, Alba and Busquets are at the top of their games. He looks forward to the few moments they'll share together on the pitch Sunday, before and after the whistle is blown. 'When you give it some space and look back at what we've been through over the years, a smile appears on your face, and you want to share things again – even if it's just 10 minutes before or after the game,' Enrique said. FIFA Club World Cup: Brutal heatwave hits players and fans across America Rising PSG star Désiré Doué, a 20-year-old who scored twice in the Champions League final, is excited to face Messi and the other Barcelona legends. 'Yes, it's a special match, but it's still a soccer game,' Doué told DAZN. 'We're lucky to be able to play against one of the greatest players in history and some of the greatest players who have marked the history of soccer.' Messi's heroics will be key if Inter Miami is going to pull off an upset against PSG, which dominated Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final on May 31. Messi's free-kick goal against Porto in Atlanta on June 19 is Inter Miami's defining moment in the Club World Cup to this point. It was instrumental in helping them reach the knockout stage of a tournament featuring 32 of the best clubs in the world. Some would argue Inter Miami has already peaked in the Club World Cup. They were the only MLS club to reach this point, while the Seattle Sounders and Los Angeles FC both failed to win a match during the group stage. Many don't expect them to pull off the upset on Sunday. Even they know the odds are stacked against them. 'It's clear and we're not naïve – we know that we're the weaker team, but that doesn't mean you can kill us off beforehand. We're going to fight, which is what it's all about,' Mascherano said. 'I think the nice thing about (Sunday's) match is that we've earned the right to play it. … The challenge is to come out tomorrow and test ourselves against what is possibly the best team in the world today.' Added Inter Miami defender Marcelo Weigandt: 'We are a very humble team. We try to give our all. And hopefully, God willing, tomorrow will be kind to us and we can get a good result.'

PSG preparing for 'emotional' reunion with Messi at Club World Cup

Lionel Messi will come up against old club Paris Saint-Germain and his former coach Luis Enrique with Inter Miami at the Club World Cup on Sunday (PATRICIA DE MELO MOREIRA) Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique said facing former player Lionel Messi will be an "emotional" reunion for both himself and the French club ahead of Sunday's Club World Cup clash against Inter Miami. Argentine great Messi joined PSG in 2021 from Barcelona, where Luis Enrique had coached him and several other current Inter Miami players. Advertisement The forward departed in 2023, the same summer the Spaniard arrived at PSG, having won two Ligue 1 titles but failed to bring the French club the Champions League triumph they craved. Luis Enrique eventually led PSG to European success this season as they won the trophy for the first time by thrashing Inter Milan on May 31. "I think the game in an emotional sense is special for me, without a doubt, for the club too and the players who have been here with Messi," Luis Enrique told a news conference Saturday. The coach said he was also excited about facing Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Inter Miami boss Javier Mascherano, all of whom he coached at Barcelona as they won the treble in 2015. Advertisement "It's beautiful to see these players, who are more than just players for me, it will be special before and after the game," he continued ahead of the match in Atlanta. Luis Enrique said Messi's presence would be a motivating factor for his PSG side, who are one of the leading favourites to win the competition. "If we can't get the ball off them it won't look good for us, because Busquets is still the same, Lionel Messi with the ball is unique," he said. "Luis Suarez, you saw the last goal he scored... and on top of that they have a coach like Mascherano... Advertisement "For us it's very motivating. We won the Champions League recently, but for us we have a lot of hunger still to show we have room to improve, that we want to compete. "There's no better stage to compete than in this marvellous stadium, facing a team in which there is a man who is called Leo Messi, who is a revered figure not just for Barca fans, but people who enjoy him as a player." - No 'slip-ups' - Luis Enrique said star PSG forward Ousmane Dembele had trained this week but he would "take no risks" with the French winger for the last-16 clash at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Advertisement After Botafogo stunned PSG in the group stage and Inter Miami surprised with a 2-1 win over Porto, Luis Enrique called on his players to maintain their concentration. "When you play in these type of competitions, and I know it perfectly well from coaching the Spanish national team, you cannot slip up whatsoever," said Luis Enrique. "You cannot pause, you cannot be excessively confident, you can't do anything wrong because 90 minutes go by very quickly, and I think it's important that from the start we try and make our mark, impose our game and that's our objective." The coach said the way to try and shackle Messi was collectively, rather than individually. "Messi can dribble (past) any player," added Luis Enrique. "If we want to stop Leo Messi, we don't want only one player, because we are dead -- we need the collective." rbs/as

Freshman quarterback Evan McCalister is Valencia's latest ‘secret weapon'

Almost every summer, Valencia High football coach Larry Muir tries to make it a mystery as to which of his newcomers projects as a top player. He likes to keep it a secret until after the summer competition is finished. Well, Valencia is headed on its two-week dead period next week, so Muir couldn't hide his thrill watching freshman quarterback Evan McCalister unleash a long pass on the final play Saturday in the Simi Valley passing tournament. The ball was caught in the end zone for a dramatic touchdown by sophomore Michael Wilder as Valencia players roared in delight with a victory over Sierra Canyon to complete a 5-1 afternoon. The 6-foot-2 McCalister, 14, has been getting playing time behind returnee Brady Bretthauer since graduating from middle school. There's little doubt he has the arm and mental make-up to become Muir's latest summer sensation, joining the likes of Steven Manfro and Brian Bonner, who were both young, unknown players before using the summer to take off at the running back position. McCalister moved from Texas and is the younger brother of Denver Broncos defensive back Tanner McCalister. 'He's very talented,' Muir said. 'He sees the field really well. He plays beyond his years.' Saturday was the busiest day so far for summer football competitions. Burbank won the Simi Valley championship by beating the host Pioneers in the final of the Platinum Division. The Bulldogs also had wins over Valencia and Sierra Canyon. Junior quarterback Deshawn Laporte led Burbank on offense. Mission Viejo won its own tournament championship by beating Mater Dei in the final. San Clemente went unbeaten to win the eight-team St. John Bosco tournament. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated Inglewood in the championship of the Baldwin Park tournament.
