Mixed reports as Barcelona star considers Premier League return

Barcelona star Ferran Torres could still opt for a bold return to the Premier League this season as he plots his next move. The Spain international showed his worth in the 2024/25 campaign run-in as Hansi Flick's side sealed a trophy treble in his debut season. Advertisement A injury to Robert Lewandowski gave him a chance to stake a claim as leader of Barcelona's attack – flanked by Raphinha and Lamine Yamal – and he impressed in the Polish veteran's absence. He ended the 2024/25 with a career-high 19 goals, bolstered by that period of covering for Lewandowski, but the latter remains undisputed as No.1 in Flick's plans. Ferran Torres' Premier League return uncertain Torres has previously stated his confidence at becoming the main man in Flick's attack but he knows that will take at least another year. Photo by Esport3 Lewandowski still has the option to extend his contract on into the 2026/27 season, and Torres faces a call on whether he is happy to wait, particularly with a World Cup on the horizon next summer. Advertisement Premier League side Aston Villa have been consistently viewed as a possible destination for Torres, despite doubts over his willingness to return to England, after struggling at Manchester City in his early career. Reports from transfer specialists claim Unai Emery does have money to spend, despite missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification. However, that rumour is firmly rejected by Catalan outlet Mundo Deportivo, citing sources from both Barcelona and Villa, who claim the link is wide of the mark. The chance of Villa making an offer still remains on the table but there has been no bid put forward by Emery. Lewandowski's game time will be delicately managed next season, and that could be decisive for Torres, if Flick convinces him on his enduring place in the wider squad across a busy season.

Barcelona no longer see Spanish international as a winger, consider him a No. 9

Barcelona no longer see Spanish international as a winger, consider him a No. 9 Barcelona's dream of signing Nico Williams came to a shocking end earlier this week when the player silently signed a renewal with Athletic Club and shut down all chances of a departure. The Catalans, however, are hell-bent on finding a new target who ticks the same boxes, and the likes of Luis Diaz and Marcus Rashford are being considered. Advertisement While Raphinha did have a great season in the position, Hansi Flick's idea is to move him into a more central role for the next campaign. Ferran Torres who served as a valuable backup, moreover, fits into different plans for the coach as relayed by Mundo Deportivo. A change in position As relayed by the Spanish outlet, Barcelona no longer consider Ferran Torres a winger. The manager sees the player as a striker for next season and will thus count on him in the No. 9 position. Ferran Torres seen as a No. 9 by Barcelona (Photo by) Robert Lewandowski is indeed still a daunting force in the final third and will serve as Barcelona's first-choice starter in the position. Advertisement The Pole, however, is ageing and is unlikely to play as many minutes as he has in recent seasons. Torres, thus, fits into the manager's plans as an ideal player to cover the striker position when Lewandowski is rested. After all, his numbers last season prove that he has a lethal finishing touch. In 27 league appearances for the Blaugrana last season, the 25-year-old scored ten goals and provided six assists despite averaging under 41 minutes per game. He also had three goals and an assist to his name in the UEFA Champions League. With Torres shifting to the centre-forward role as well, there is a clear need for a new right-winger at the club. With both Diaz and Rashford closely linked, it remains to be seen who the club can accommodate financially.

Barcelona already know one position they want to strengthen next summer

Barcelona already know one position they want to strengthen next summer The board at La Liga giants Barcelona have already identified one area of the club's first-team squad as being in need of reinforcement in the summer of 2026. That's according to Diario Sport, who point towards centre-forward as the position in question. Advertisement Barcelona's attack is of course currently spearheaded by Robert Lewandowski, fresh off a 42-goal season last time out. The Pole, though, is due to see his contract terms at the Camp Nou expire in the summer of 2026. Due to turn 38 just months later, the expectation is that Lewandowski, in turn, will not be offered a renewal. As much will leave a sizable hole in Hansi Flick's frontline, one which Deco and co. evidently believe Ferran Torres is not yet ready to fill. In turn, the Blaugrana are already combing the market for potential striker signings in 12 months' time. As per Sport: 'The investment will go to the winger (this summer) and the strategic succession of the '9' will be for the next summer market.' Conor Laird – GSFN
