Etienne Youte transfer fee plunges as Celtic face £6m 'hurry' with 'best defender' exit escalating centre back search
The recruitment drive at Celtic Park looks to be ramping up with the season fast approaching Le Havre president Jean-Michel Roussier admits their asking price for centre-back Etienne Youte could drop amid reported interest from Celtic. Reports in France suggest that the Scottish Premiership champions have joined Anderlecht and Besiktas in the race to land the 23-year-old. Youte only has a year remaining on his currently contract and the Ligue 1 outfit would reportedly accept a €5million (£4.3million) fee this summer. But Roussier admits that the cash-strapped club could be forced into a bargain sale of the centre-back this summer. Speaking to Paris Normadie, the club supremo was asked about the risk of allowing player's deals to run out. He said: "We're used to it. We have to sell a lower cost, with free agents something we cannot risk. We are a company that is losing money." Red Star Belgrade defender Veljko Milosavljevic is also said to be on the agenda amid claims that the club are ready to drop their asking price. It was claimed earlier this summer that Celtic representatives "offered" £5.1million for the 17-year-old, which was rejected. However, a £6million offer would reportedly tempt the Serbian side to cash-in on the rising star. Max Sport report that Everton have made contact and are now stepping up their interest - which could leave Celtic in a "hurry" to get the deal over the line and see off the Premier League side in a bidding war. Maik Nawrocki is among the fringe men that have been allowed to leave the club this summer - but Frank McAvennie reckons the club have made a mistake in allowing the Polish star join Hannover 96. But speaking on his 'Let Me Be Frank' podcast, McAvennie said: 'There are a couple of players who went out. 'I feel sorry for Nawrocki. He has gone out, and I thought, 'that boy was decent.' I really did. I thought he was a good player. 'I hope we don't rue that. He never let the team down. He came in, five or six games, and he was outstanding. He was the best defender we had.' Owen Beck to Rangers transfer drive ramps up as Liverpool demand £10m but Ibrox side target 'compromise'
Rangers view Beck as a live option but whether an agreement can be reached over a fee is another matter Rangers are reportedly pressing ahead with talks to sign Owen Beck from Liverpool – and while the Reds' £10m asking price is a problem, it's believed the Ibrox side are hopeful of a compromise. The left-back has been heavily linked with a move to Rangers all summer while Celtic held a firm interest in the past although that has subsided since Kieran Tierney's return to Parkhead. Russell Martin is on the hunt for a new player to nail down that position, having stripped Ridvan Yilmaz of his squad number and bombed the Turkish star out of his Champions League squad to face Panathinaikos. Jefte is available but right-back Max Aarons has been the favoured starter at left-back throughout pre-season, indicating Martin isn't convinced by either of his natural left-backs. We understand Rangers do view Beck as a live option and now Liverpool outlet Dave OCKOP claims talks are advancing. It's added that Liverpool want around £10m for the 22-year-old but that Rangers are keen to negotiate a 'compromised' fee closer to £7m. Liverpool's preferred option is said to be extending Beck's contact beyond its current expiry date of 2026. But it's claimed Rangers would prefer to purchase him outright and make him the long-term solution to their left-back problems. Beck, who previously impressed on loan at Dundee, played 24 times in the Championship for Blackburn last season and has three senior Liverpool appearances to his name. Panathinaikos present toughest start for Martin
Champions League qualifying: Rangers v PanathinaikosVenue: Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow Date: Tuesday, 22 July Time: 19:45 BSTCoverage: Listen on BBC Radio Scotland Extra & Sounds, live text commentary on the BBC Sport website & app Sixty-six days after they concluded an uninspiring, at times listless, season, Rangers face one of the most important games they will face in the new campaign as soon as the starting gun is the worst possible draw in the second qualifying round for Europe's premier club competition, an arduous and dangerous path towards the Champions League lies ahead for new head coach Russell with Greek Super League runners-up Panathinaikos, it couldn't have been much tougher and the question is are Rangers ready for this trepidatious journey? If you include the now contracted Oscar Cortes, the club has made eight new signings for the season for Martin, one of them, Norway international Thelo Aasgaard, will miss the first leg at Ibrox on Tuesday evening while the most recent of the arrivals, Djeidi Gassama, is not ready to fact is that his new team-mates have to be ready to start and rarely has the club's motto been more pertinent. The riches and prestige that the Champions League brings has always focused minds and it is something that their city rivals Celtic have secured in each of the past three seasons, although such is the state of Scotland's coefficient, even Brendan Rodgers' side have to qualify this time, albeit two rounds new format of the tournament appears kinder to Scottish hopes of progression, as demonstrated in Glasgow's east end last term. The prize is there for also know who they will face if they can get past Rui Vitoria's side with former foes Servette and Czechs Viktoria Plzen lying in wait and, given the tougher task of Besiktas or Shakhtar Donetsk await as part of their Europa League insurance policy, there is even more motivation for negotiating this would also guarantee at least Europa League football until is a big Rangers squad will require further surgery but Martin has had to scramble together a team that he'll hope can get them past a Panathinaikos that was as far behind Super League winners Olympiacos as they were Rangers fans have caught sight of their team once this pre-season during a 2-2 draw with Club Brugge and just one of Martin's new signings started, on loan full-back Max Aarons. They have had some bounce games as well but will it prove to be enough to get up to full readiness and breed the new players into a squad that was desperately in need of a rebuild? Vitoria has 'ambition and belief' They don't need long memories for inspiration that they can get over this hurdle having produced a Europa League draw in Pireaus against eventual Greek champions Olympiacos last coach Vitoria has made minimal changes to his squad from last season and remains hopeful of coercing Morrocco international midfielder Azzedine Ounahi back to Athens after a fruitful season on loan from Marseille last term, although Spaniards Girona have also been keen on one of the North African nation's 2022 World Cup made the last 16 of the Conference League in season 2024-25, losing out to Fiorentina, but the 1971 runners-up haven't competed in the Champions League proper for 15 years. It is something they are desperate to rectify as they rounded off their pre-season with a 3-1 win over Belgians Westerlo in Athens' Olympic Stadium, where they will host Rangers next Wednesday."These matches are always different from the official ones," midfielder Adam Cerin said after that game."Things are not easy but we showed that we are in good shape. There are factors like the atmosphere at Ibrox. We prepared well and we will give everything."We will give our best for a result there so that we can come to Athens with a positive result."Coach Vitoria is confident that they can edge past their Scottish hosts over the two legs, commenting: "We have ambition, quality and we want to qualify against Rangers."Rangers, they are a strong team, they have a history in Europe and especially in the Champions League, but we have our own chances. We have ambition and belief in our abilities, we have quality, we believe in ourselves and we want to qualify."With temperatures in Athens due to hit 41 degrees this week, Martin will know the importance of taking an advantage to the ancient city for next week's return, ready or not.
