Celtic vs Ajax LIVE score and goal updates as Hoops set sights on Como Cup Final

Lake Como might be a paradise for the rich and famous. But tonight it's all about Celtic getting more minutes in the legs against Dutch heavyweights Ajax. Brendan Rodgers' side are back in action as their pre-season tour reaches its final leg - and they'll be gunning to add another trophy to the summer cabinet. It's been a solid warm-up so far. The Hoops have already bagged the Cork Super Cup and adidas Trophy, and now they've got their eyes on a mini Treble as they gear up for the inaugural Como Cup. Just like Sporting Lisbon and Newcastle United, this will prove another tough test. Ajax may be in rebuild mode, but they still pack plenty of punch and Rodgers will want to see his players rise to the occasion in one of Europe's most scenic stadiums. Fans will be eager to catch a glimpse of new Bhoy Shin Yamada, although the £1.5million signing from Kawasaki Frontale might have to wait a little longer to make his debut. Defender Cameron Carter-Vickers could feature after returning from minor surgery, while Alistair Johnston is back in the fold too. 17:34Ryan McDonald Storm brewing over Como So much for sunny Italy. There's a storm rolling into town ahead of Celtic's clash with Ajax. What was supposed to be a picture-perfect setting on the banks of Lake Como has taken a dramatic turn. Just hours before kick-off at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, a severe thunderstorm warning is now in place. Rain is pelting down and there have been flashes of lightning on the hills that tower above the stadium. It's a far cry from the calm, postcard scenes Brendan Rodgers' squad arrived at last night. So far, there has been no official word on any delay or disruption and the match is still expected to go ahead as planned. But if anything changes, you'll be the first to know right here. Spare a thought for our man in Como - Michael Gannon forgot to pack his cagoule! Ryan McDonald Predicted Celtic XI It's always hard to predict how teams will line up during pre-season friendlies. But Brendan Rodgers will likely roll out his big guns for another huge test against Ajax. Alistair Johnston and Cameron Carter-Vickers are back in the fold, while new Bhoy Shin Yamada has joined the group. Johnny Kenny starred in the weekend's 4-0 thumping of Newcastle and also made the difference against Sporting Lisbon. Will he be given the nod over £9million frontman Adam Idah? Here's Record Sport's predicted XI. Ryan McDonald A mini pre-season Treble at stake Start as you mean to go on. That will be the message that Brendan Rodgers will have sent out to his players this summer. The defence of the title finally gets underway next weekend but Celtic already have two trophies in the cabinet. The Hoops have lifted the Cork Super Cup and adidas Trophy and will now look to end pre-season with the Como Cup. Yes, it's only a friendly. But as a club like Celtic, every game matters. And it's always nice to win some silverware.

Celtic vs Newcastle United LIVE score and goal updates from Parkhead friendly

Celtic will start their Scottish Premiership title defence and quest for five-in-a-row in just a couple of weeks. And Brendan Rodgers and his Bhoys are stepping up their preparations ahead of the big kick off with a Battle of Britain friendly. Eddie Howe was once targeted by the Hoops for the manager's job but swerved it, paving the way for Ange Postecoglou. It hasn't worked out too badly for the ex Bournemouth man whop led Newcastle United to their first trophy in 70 years last season. The Magpies lifted the Carabao Cup and with Celtic lifting Scotland's equivalent as part of a domestic double, the pair clash in Glasgow. And there will even be silverware for the winners who will get their hands on the inaugural adidas Trophy, a new one-off contest between two of the brand's flagship clubs. 11:01Gavin Berry Get Shin there Celtic kicked off today with the announcement of another signing as Shin Yamada was confirmed. And he is happy to be the latest Japanese star to be snapped up by the Hoops but insists he arrives at Parkhead as his own man. The 25-year-old has completed his £1.2million switch from J1 League side Kawasaki Frontale and has penned a four-year contract in Glasgow's East End. Yamada will team up with compatriots Reo Hatate, Daizen Maeda and fellow summer signing Hayato Inamura. And while he is also aware of the exploits of former Parkhead hero Kyogo Furuhashi, the 25-year-old is determined to create his own history in the green-and-white. Speaking to the club's webiste, he said: 'It is a huge honour for me to be here as a Celtic player and I can't wait to begin my time at this amazing club. 'Celtic is one of the top names in world football. I have already watched my countrymen like Daizen, Reo and Kyogo do so well at Celtic and I will aim to have the same impact. 'I am my own player, though, and I am ready to face all my own challenges directly. 'I want to do so well at Celtic, I know that Celtic Park is one of the best places in the world to play football with the best supporters around and I will do everything I can to make my new fans proud of me. 'I promise I will give everything I have to bring our fans success.' 10:54Gavin Berry Flashback Where does the time go? It's 30 years since Newcastle United played Celtic in a friendly to officially open the £17million North Stand at Parkhead. The Hoops were starting to get going under the late Tommy Burns and the teams drew 1-1 with John Collins and Les Ferdinand the scorers. David Ginola starred for Kevin Keegan's men after the Frenchman had rejected the chance to join Celtic from Paris Saint-Germain. 10:46Gavin Berry Geordies are talk of the Toon Ticket sales for this one were initially sluggish among the home fans but they have really picked up in the build up to the game and it could be a sell-out. The away fans had no such trouble in terms of appeal with the Geordies snapping up around 10,000 tickets. That should help make an incredible atmosphere with many of the Toon Army making a weekend of it in Glasgow. It wasn't so long ago they were on the other side of the city for a midweek friendly against Rangers when they brought a similarly sizeable support north of the border. 10:42Gavin Berry Howe-away the lads There's a parallel reality where Eddie Howe landed the Celtic job back in 2021 but it's fair to say it's worked out well for both parties since. The Hoops, after all, have continued to dominate under Ange Postecoglou and Brendan Rodgers, while Howe has led the Magpies back to the European stage and delivered their first major trophy in 70 years. Howe had doubts over the make-up his coaching staff which sparked him to exit protracted talks to become Neil Lennon 's permanent successor in June 2021. The Englishman saying no opened the door to Postecoglou who rebuilt the Parkhead side. However, Howe's main sticking point didn't faze Postecoglou who left Yokohama Marinos and didn't bring his own staff with him. The Australian's success came alongside John Kennedy and Gavin Strachan despite the duo suffering flak for their role in Celtic's botched attempt to secure 10 In A Row. In a previous interview, Howe admitted the chance to rebuild the Hoops appealed but he declined to join the club after being unable to add trusted lieutenants Jason Tindall, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone. Celtic was the one job I'd been offered that really appealed. The issue there was my staff. I felt that if I was to come into a pressured job like that, I needed to go in with a sense of stability. I could have recruited new staff, but then you're working each other out and there's a transition process where it probably takes three, four, five months. That's five months too late. I needed my staff with me and we couldn't get them together.

I want to enjoy every single moment – Kieran Tierney relishing Celtic return

The Scotland defender will run out on the Celtic Park pitch for the first time since leaving for Arsenal six years ago, when the Hoops host Newcastle in a pre-season friendly on Saturday. The 28-year-old took advantage of freedom of contract to agree a return to his boyhood club in January and is delighted to be back. 🏟️📸#bacKToparadise | #CelticFC🍀 — Celtic Football Club (@CelticFC) July 18, 2025 'It's probably the easiest signing Celtic's had to make and easiest decision I've had to make as well,' he said. 'When I knew I was going to be a free agent in the summer, things can happen in January so the talks obviously started then. And once we found out it wouldn't happen in January, it would be the summer, first thing in the summer.' Looking ahead to Saturday, he said: 'It'll be amazing, it'll be a special day. Probably a little bit of nerves as well because it's the first time I've done it in so long. But I've spent a huge chunk of my life here, a big part of my career and still lots to go, so I'll be absolutely buzzing for it. 'You always miss it, you do miss it. It's a club that I think, I won't be the only one who says it, when you're away from it, you do miss it, you miss the people in the club, the fans, the atmosphere and just everything about the club. 'You do miss it, but now I'm back here and I want to enjoy every single moment again and make the most of it. 'Even when I left, I remember my first interview at Arsenal. One of the media guys asked me: 'Do you think you'll go back to Celtic?' 'So it's something that's always been spoken about with me, when will it happen, when will it happen? 'You never know for sure but when the opportunity came then it was a no-brainer.' The Bhoys are back at Lennoxtown ⛰️#adidasTrophy | #CelticFC🍀 — Celtic Football Club (@CelticFC) July 18, 2025 Tierney won eight major trophies before heading to Arsenal, where he won an FA Cup winners' medal, and he plans to pick up where he left off. When asked about his targets, he said: 'Personal and the collective one for me is just the same: it's just to keep Celtic as successful as possible, maintain our place at the top.' Tierney is set for a hero's welcome after his pre-contract agreement was celebrated among supporters in January. 'They've been brilliant,' he said. 'Just leaving the training ground earlier, there were lots of people there asking for autographs and pictures and welcoming me back. 'It just makes you feel at home already. Although you've not played back at Celtic Park or the league's not started, you still feel at home already. 'There's some stuff that's the exact same, it feels like you've never been away. But even when you go up to Lennoxtown, the training ground's come on massively. It's a great place to be but it's still a lot of the same people. 'A lot of new players for me to get used to as well but it's been great.'
