Charles Oliveira unsure UFC 317 backup Arman Tsarukyan gets title fight winner

USA Today20-06-2025

Charles Oliveira is content with Arman Tsarukyan being positioned as the title fight alternate at UFC 317, but doesn't know if that means he will face the winner of his clash with Ilia Topuria.
Oliveira (35-10 MMA, 23-10 UFC) will meet Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) for the vacant lightweight championship in the main event of the June 28 card at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+), and as insurance for the matchup, Tsarukyan (22-3 MMA, 9-2 UFC) will weigh in as the official backup.
Although the ideal scenario would be for the fight with Topuria to go forward as planned, if something chaotic happens before stepping into the octagon and Tsarukyan's services are needed, then Oliveira said he would proceed with UFC's secondary plan.
"I didn't know he was the backup, but if that's what the UFC decides, then that's what we're going to do," Oliveira told MMA Junkie through an interpreter. "He's also a great guy and a great opponent. So, we'll see."
Oliveira suffered a split decision loss to Tsarukyan at UFC 300 in April 2024. The victory sent Tsarukyan into a title shot against then-champ Islam Makhachev at UFC 311 in January, but he withdrew on weigh-in day due to a back injury and has been trying to restore his image with the UFC brass ever since.
Whether Tsarukyan doing the job as UFC 317 backup fighter puts him in better standing with executives remains to be seen, but there will be multiple fighters clamoring for the winner of Oliveira vs. Topuria.
Tsarukyan is among them, but there is also Justin Gaethje, who has made his desire very clear to challenge for the belt next, and BMF champ Max Holloway has also staked his claim if he beats Dustin Poirier at UFC 318 on July 19 in New Orleans.
Oliveira said he can't pinpoint who is going to be the first challenger to the new champion crowned at UFC 317, but he admits there's multiple viable candidates.
"The reality is that everyone is right there," Oliveira said. "Everyone is in that position, so everyone wants an opportunity. It's hard for me to say who it is that deserves it or not."

Sean Shelby's Shoes: What's next for Ilia Topuria after UFC 317 title win?

Ilia Topuria achieved the rarest of feats at UFC 317 when he claimed a second divisional title all while undefeated. After vacating the featherweight strap earlier this year, Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) moved up to lightweight and dismantled Charles Oliveira (35-11 MMA, 23-11 UFC) for a first-round knockout to become the 10th name in company history to join the two-division title club. Topuria is unlike any champion before him, however, in that he's never experienced a blemish on his record. He became a marquee name for UFC in the process, and now there's no telling what Topuria is capable of. "El Matador" has a number of potential opponents on the horizon, but who will be first to challenge for his 155-pound belt? Watch the video above for thoughts and analysis on Topuria's future after UFC 317.

Stephen A. Smith says quiet part out loud about Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers' retirement

Aaron Rodgers shocked the world when he all but confirmed his retirement plans — and Stephen A. Smith applauded the future Hall of Famer's direction. Rodgers claimed that when he retires, no one will see him out in public — a decision that Smith believes, when considering the unnecessary criticism directed at him, is well deserved. 'They used every excuse to get at [Rodgers],' Smith said on ESPN's First Take. 'It has been very, very annoying — and it has been a bit intrusive. Dare I say, even in this day and age, where every little excuse that you could find to get at him, people have gotten at him. "I like the idea: 'Listen, this is it. I'm out after this, and you won't see me.' He's basically telling the world, 'Kiss his a--.' And I have no problem with it whatsoever, because I think half the world deserves to hear that from him — because I think not enough appreciation has been thrown in his direction. This brother was not good. He was great.' From outspoken analysts like former Steelers safety Ryan Clark to the polarizing response of his signing with Pittsburgh, Rodgers has more than his fair share of critics — but Smith makes a valid point: a lot of it has been unfair. Buccaneers' Safety's Contract Ranked Most 'Player-Friendly' Deal

Buccaneers' Safety's Contract Ranked Most 'Player-Friendly' Deal originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After an incredible 2023 that earned him a First-Team All-Pro nod and a sixth-place finish in Defensive Player of the Year honors, Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. suffered a setback in 2024, mainly due to injuries. Advertisement The former second-round pick in 2020 earned a record four-year, $84.1 million deal after posting a career-high 122 total tackles with 76 solo and six for loss, while adding eight QB hits, a league-high six forced fumbles and six sacks in 2023. Even while dealing with calf and knee injuries last season, and appearing in just nine games, Winfield still managed 60 tackles with 34 solo and four QB hits to go along with two sacks. But it's the contract that's grabbed the attention of ESPN's Dan Graziano. Graziano named Winfield's contract the most "player-friendly" deal for any safety in the league. "Winfield is the league's second-highest paid safety by average annual salary, just slightly behind [Kerby] Joseph. But the rest of the deal is great for Winfield in comparison," Dan Graziano wrote. "Winfield got a $20 million roster bonus in 2024 and fully guaranteed salaries of $4 million in 2024 and $21 million in 2025. Advertisement "He's sure to make $45 million over the first two years of the deal and would make $64.5 million over the first three if he stays in Tampa Bay. It's strong money, given the rest of the safety market." Winfield Jr. and the Buccaneers hope to rebound from a disappointing playoff performance last season when they were ousted by the visiting Washington Commanders in the Wild Card round. A healthy Winfield Jr. will go a long way to accomplish that.
