Pakatan eyes 25 seats in polls pact with GRS
Sabah PKR chief Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said he expected the seat distribution to be ironed out soon.
'It has to be discussed with GRS, mainly PGRS (Gagasan Rakyat). We welcome the cooperation. The next step is to discuss seats,' he said after the Gagasan Rakyat annual general assembly here yesterday.
Mustapha said Sabah Pakatan would like to contest between 23 and 25 of the 73 seats up for grabs.
Sabah PKR won two seats – Inanam and Api Api – in the 2020 state election.
It was earlier reported that PKR was eyeing between 13 and 18 seats, with Amanah seeking five, DAP six to eight and Upko up to eight.
Mustapha said the pact with GRS was a positive development for political stability in Sabah.
'I want to thank the chief minister for upholding cooperation between GRS and Pakatan. As a Pakatan leader, I welcome it. I think it is good for Sabah and Sabahans,' he added.

KOTA KINABALU: PKR secretary-general Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh has confirmed the Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) alliance in Sabah for the upcoming state election. "PKR always welcomes cooperation with any party in facing the Sabah state election," she said. "PKR believes it is a win-win combination. It is a win for the people of Sabah, and also a win for all component parties in the cooperation," she told the New Straits Times. Yesterday, the Chief Minister and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor reiterated his commitment to work with Sabah PH for the upcoming state election. He attributed this willingness to work with PH to their leaders' support during the attempt to topple the GRS-led state government in 2023. However, Hajiji said that the people of Sabah should vote wisely to ensure GRS, a local-based coalition, dominates the political scene in the state. Sabah Parti Keadilan Rakyat chief Datuk Mustapha Sakmud had said that despite PH eyeing over 20 seats, both coalitions would still have to sit down to negotiate on which seats to contest.

Bangladesh seeks Malaysia's backing for Asean membership during meeting with Nurul Izzah
NEW DELHI, July 28 — Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar called on Bangladesh interim leader Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka on Sunday. Yunus, during the meeting, sought Malaysia's support for Bangladesh to join the Association of South-east Asian Nations (Asean). 'We want to become a part of Asean, and we will need your support,' he told Nurul Izzah, according to a Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha report. Bangladesh applied to become an Asean sectoral dialogue partner in 2020. Yunus also invited Malaysian companies to invest in Bangladesh's growing economy. 'Asia is ageing rapidly, but Bangladesh has a lot of young people. Half of our population is under the age of 27. Set up your industries here and export from Bangladesh. It will help both our economies,' he said. The interim government's chief advisor informed the PKR deputy chief about Bangladesh's political reforms following last year's uprising, which ended Sheikh Hasina's nearly 16-year rule. Nurul Izzah spoke at Dhaka University on Sunday at a conference marking the first anniversary of the July Revolution. Kota Kinabalu: Two prominent business leaders lauded the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah-PH government under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor for maintaining political stability and driving inclusive economic development in the State. Chief Executive Officer of Kumpulan BTC Berhad Datuk Abdul Kadir M.E. Sikkandar, said the current administration has created a conducive environment for business growth and investor confidence. He highlighted the government's commitment to transparency, inclusiveness and people-centric development, stating that Sabah today stands on a strong foundation. 'With continued leadership under Hajiji I am confident Sabah will scale even greater heights. 'Political uncertainty continues to challenge other parts of the country, but Sabah has emerged as a model of calm, unity and steady progress,' he said. Abdul Kadir said Kumpulan BTC Berhad, a homegrown company, has grown significantly under the current administration and now employs over 800 Sabahans across various sectors. He attributed the expansion to the state's stable political climate and pro-business policies under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan. 'The SMJ Plan has reenergised key sectors such as agriculture, tourism, infrastructure and renewable energy. 'While also opening up opportunities for local and Bumiputera entrepreneurs to thrive,' he said. Abdul Kadir who is also the Deputy President of the Dewan Usahawan Melayu Sabah observed a renewed sense of optimism among local entrepreneurs, especially younger Sabahans exploring opportunities in business, agriculture and innovation within the State. Meanwhile, prominent businessman Tan Sri TC Goh said the GRS government's economic stewardship has yielded remarkable results. 'The result exceeded expectations and solidifying its position as a capable administrator,' said the Sabah Advisory Council (SEAC) member. 'The Government's success is underscored by a dramatic increase in state revenue: nearly RM7 billion annually for 2022, 2023, and 2024 – a significant leap from RM3.5 billion in 2020,' Goh said. This growth, Goh said, mirrored a robust rise in Sabah's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), climbing from RM83.2 billion in 2023 to RM84.3 billion in 2024, coupled with a substantial increase in state reserves to RM8.6 billion. He said these figures demonstrate a healthy and thriving economy, directly attributable to the GRS government's effective management.
