‘Ticking timebomb': sea acidity has reached critical levels, threatening entire ecosystems

The world's oceans are in worse health than realised, scientists have said today, as they warn that a key measurement shows we are 'running out of time' to protect marine ecosystems.
Ocean acidification, often called the 'evil twin' of the climate crisis, is caused when carbon dioxide is rapidly absorbed by the ocean, where it reacts with water molecules leading to a fall in the pH level of the seawater. It damages coral reefs and other ocean habitats and, in extreme cases, can dissolve the shells of marine creatures.
Until now, ocean acidification had not been deemed to have crossed its 'planetary boundary'. The planetary boundaries are the natural limits of key global systems – such as climate, water and wildlife diversity – beyond which their ability to maintain a healthy planet is in danger of failing. Six of the nine had been crossed already, scientists said last year.
However, a new study by the UK's Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), the Washington-based National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Oregon State University's Co-operative Institute for Marine Resources Studies found that ocean acidification's 'boundary' was also reached about five years ago.
'Ocean acidification isn't just an environmental crisis – it's a ticking timebomb for marine ecosystems and coastal economies,' said PML's Prof Steve Widdicombe, who is also co-chair of the Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network.
The study drew on new and historical physical and chemical measurements from ice cores, combined with advanced computer models and studies of marine life, which gave the scientists an overall assessment of the past 150 years.
It found that by 2020 the average ocean condition worldwide was already very close to – and in some regions beyond – the planetary boundary for ocean acidification. This is defined as when the concentration of calcium carbonate in seawater is more than 20% below preindustrial levels.
The deeper in the ocean they looked, the worse the findings were, the scientists said. At 200 metres below the surface, 60% of global waters had breached the 'safe' limit for acidification.
'Most ocean life doesn't just live at the surface,' said PML's Prof Helen Findlay. 'The waters below are home to many more different types of plants and animals. Since these deeper waters are changing so much, the impacts of ocean acidification could be far worse than we thought.'
This had, she added, huge implications for important underwater ecosystems such as tropical and even deep-sea coral reefs that provided essential habitats and nursery grounds for the young of many species.
As pH levels drop, calcifying species such as corals, oysters, mussels and tiny molluscs known as sea butterflies struggle to maintain their protective structures, leading to weaker shells, slower growth, reduced reproduction and decreased survival rates.

The authors underlined that decreasing CO2 emissions was the only way to deal with acidification globally, but that conservation measures could and should focus on the regions and species that were most vulnerable.
Jessie Turner, director of the International Alliance to Combat Ocean Acidification, who was not involved in the study, said: 'This report makes it clear: we are running out of time and what we do – or fail to do – now is already determining our future.
'We are coming to terms with an existential threat while grappling with the difficult reality that much suitable habitat for key species has already been lost. It's clear that governments can no longer afford to overlook acidification in mainstream policy agendas,' she said.

Keep checking those gold prices—scientists have more news about the coveted metal. An energy startup claims it has the recipe for modern-day alchemy: turning mercury into gold inside a nuclear fusion reactor. Last week, Marathon Fusion, a San Francisco-based energy startup, submitted a preprint detailing an action plan for synthesizing gold particles via nuclear transmutation—essentially the process of turning one element into another by tweaking its nucleus. The paper, which has yet to undergo peer review, argues that the proposed system would offer a new revenue stream from all the new gold being produced, in addition to other economic and technological benefits. Specifically, the proposed method involves introducing mercury-198 into a fusion reactor and bombarding it with neutrons until it transforms into mercury-197, a much more unstable isotope of mercury. Because of its instability, mercury-197 decays into gold-197, the only stable isotope of gold. This process takes about 64 hours and relies on the steady release of high-energy neutrons popping out of the fusion of the hydrogen isotopes deuterium and tritium. A special 'blanket configuration' in the tokamak—a donut-shaped machine that uses magnetic fields to confine plasma—would separate gold production from the fusion plant's energy generation, according to the study authors. As a result, gold production wouldn't impinge on the plant's primary function to generate nuclear energy. This setup would allow the plant to 'simultaneously meet the fuel cycle requirements of [deuterium and tritium] fusion and achieve economically valuable production of gold,' the authors wrote in the paper. Assuming this is all feasible—and this remains a big theoretical assumption—reactors using this approach could produce around 11,000 pounds (5,000 kilograms) of gold every year per gigawatt of electricity generated, according to Marathon Fusion's chief executive, Kyle Schiller, and chief technology officer, Adam Rutkowski. To put this into perspective, around 3,000 metric tons of gold are mined each year. In an interview with the Financial Times, the two representatives stated that this 'byproduct' could double the revenue of the plant. But it's worth noting that the same process would likely result in the production of unstable and potentially radioactive isotopes of gold. As such, Rutkowski admitted, the gold would have to be stored for 14 to 18 years before it could be labeled radiation-safe. Experts who have (unofficially) reviewed the study claim the proposal presents thought-provoking points that warrant further discussion. 'On paper it looks great, and everyone so far that I talk to remains intrigued and excited,' Ahmed Diallo, a plasma physicist at the U.S. Department of Energy's national laboratory at Princeton who wasn't involved in the study, told the Financial Times. But all that shines is not gold—especially given the fact that, again, the paper has yet to be peer reviewed and does not offer any empirical demonstrations of the proposed setup. If this company is successful, however, perhaps we'll finally have achieved modern alchemy without giant particle accelerators. Although, in my opinion, effectively achieving alchemy through the use of giant accelerators is still pretty cool.

'We're in this until the end.' But that 'end' feels only more and more amorphous. The shock-and-awe announcements of big funding cuts have waned, but academics are girding for a future of smaller federal investments in all kinds of science. Researchers today scarcely know who to call at grant-making agencies anymore, and even those whose funding remains intact worry about whether the money will flow as planned. He started his career as an attorney at a big firm. After a recession-era layoff, he hopped between countries to train lawyers advocating for former child soldiers in Burundi and work as a public defender in Palau. Eventually, a stint living with employees of the global health nonprofit Partners in Health inspired Delaney to pursue epidemiology. He got his masters in public health in Baltimore, before moving to Massachusetts for his doctorate at Harvard. Advertisement Now, as universities battle the White House in court, Grant Witness is referenced in lawsuits about NIH dollars, NSF funding, and another that relates to the Trump administration's actions against Harvard. A complaint in court is a tangible vehicle for hope, Delaney said, but he still struggles to dodge cynicism every day. A child of the 1980s, Delaney often thinks about how much money has been unwound for AIDS and HIV research. He's horrified to see grants cut for suicide prevention efforts for transgender children. Funding revocations for research projects led by women and people of color make Delaney question why the background of a scientist has any impact on the credibility of their science. It moved him to seriously heed warnings about the country shifting, away from democracy towards authoritarianism. 'The people pointing to the most extreme possible consequences are oftentimes dismissed,' he said. But 'when the most extreme versions of terrible things start happening, we should probably start listening to those that are warning us.' As for Delaney personally, the options are dizzying. He made peace with the fact that he will likely no longer work at Harvard by Halloween and may leave epidemiology entirely — though he won't depart Grant Witness. Delaney not-so-silently hopes that universities stand their ground against threats to their academic freedom and research enterprise. But he hopes they survive either way.
