Female trainee constables protest at U.P.'s Gorakhpur centre over basic amenities, abusive language, cameras

The Hindu3 days ago
Fresh batch of women constable recruits at Gorakhpur's 26 Battalion Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) campus of U.P. Police on Wednesday (July 23, 2025) protested and raised slogans alleging lack of basic facilities like drinking water, electricity, abusive language of trainers and even claimed that they were being forced to bathe in the open and cameras in bathroom corridors.
In the viral videos, which were shared widely the new recruits could be heard saying, 'If they (authorities) could not make arrangements, why were we called here, there was shortage of everything from electricity to drinking water, our privacy was compromised, there were of lack of private bathing areas,".
Another recruit added, "one Reverse Osmosis (RO) set was given for around 600 students, for 30 girls four fans were functional, even the fans were not in proper working condition,". Some protesting recruits question the high number of appointed women called at once for training while a few claimed presences of CCTV cameras in bathroom corridors, terming it as a breach of privacy.
While administrative officers dispersed the protestors who were blocking the road and directed them back inside the centre, the recruits protested outside the administrative building, demanding addressing of their basic demands.
Amid the protest senior officials including senior PAC officer Akhil Kumar and district police officials rushed to the spot and initiated an inquiry. "Officials took serious note of the issues raised by the women recruits of 26 Battalion PAC, Gorakhpur and a detailed inquiry was initiated. It was found that due to a 'technical fault' electricity shortage happened which led to a temporary water scarcity, the issue has been promptly resolved. Following the preliminary enquiry, Physical Training Instructor (PTI), who used abusive language with women recruits was suspended. The claim of camera in bathroom is completely wrong, the U.P. police give highest priority to women security and respect," reads an official statement issued by Additional Director General (ADG) PAC, Uttar Pradesh.
Opposition parties hit out at the State government over the mismanagement accusation adding for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) women worship is only a slogan. "Unfortunate news is coming from Gorakhpur about the mismanagement of the training centre for women police recruits. There is no electricity, no water, no dignified bathroom. When this is the condition of the main city then what can one say about the rest. Women worship is a slogan of the BJP," wrote the Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav, on X.
The 26th Battalion PAC centre, which serves as a police training school, recently seen induction of 598 women constable recruits from various districts of Uttar Pradesh as part of the 2023 batch.

BJP MP claims KTR was open to political alliance, but on one condition

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP CM Ramesh kicked off a fierce political storm in Telangana, claiming that Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President Kalvakuntla Tarka Rama Rao (KTR) had offered an alliance or merger with the party on one condition. BRS Working President and MLA K T Rama Rao reiterated that the BRS will never merge with any other party. (PTI File) According to Ramesh, KTR had laid out his condition as dropping the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probes against his sister K Kavitha. "Did Kalvakuntla Tarka Rama Rao forget that he came to my house in Delhi? It's recorded in CCTV - and I can share it with the media... Didn't he ask for ED, CBI probes to be stopped against Kavitha and others and asked to talk to HM (Home Minister)? Didn't he say that if the investigation is stopped, BRS would merge with BJP?" CM Ramesh asked. The latest claim comes amid a heated exchange of salvos among the BJP and the BRS leaders. KTR had denied ever suggesting any merger with the BJP. KTR denies proposing a merger of BRS with the BJP BRS working president KTR has vehemently denied the allegations that he proposed a merger between his party and the BJP. KTR reiterated that the BRS will never merge with any other party. He said that the BRS was born for Telangana and remains committed to the state's welfare. The BRS leader alleged a secret understanding and collusion between Telangana chief minister Revanth Reddy and BJP MP CM Ramesh, in large government contracts awarded to Andhra Pradesh contractors in Telangana. 'To divert attention from these scams, they are bringing up the useless and useless issue of merging with the BJP again. The party born for the people of Telangana.. The party that fights for the people of Telangana is not now.. The people of Telangana know that there is no question of merging with any party ever. Every time they are in trouble, both Congress and BJP are trying to confuse the people of Telangana by bringing up this useless issue,' KTR wrote in a post on X. KTR also challenged Revanth Reddy and Ramesh to take him on in a public debate on these alleged scams.

26.34 lakh ‘ineligible' beneficiaries will be temporarily suspended under Ladki Bahin scheme

The Maharashtra government has revealed that 26.34 lakh beneficiaries, who are ineligible under the Ladki Bahin Scheme, have been temporarily suspended for the June instalment. 'The benefits for 26.34 lakh applicants have been temporarily suspended starting from June 2025. The instalments for the month have been disbursed to 2.25 crore eligible beneficiaries,' said Minister for Women and Child Development Aditi Tatkare, adding the suspended beneficiaries' eligibility will be verified by the respective District Collectors. The Department of Women and Child Development had sought information from all government departments to verify the eligibility of all applications. 'The Information and Technology Department reported that approximately 26.34 lakh beneficiaries, despite being ineligible, became beneficiaries of the scheme,' said Aditi Tatkare, Minister for Women and Child Development, on X. The Ladki Bahin scheme was launched in August 2024 ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly election held in November 2024. The scheme was considered one of the reasons for the BJP-led Mahayuti victory in the election. However, after the elections, the government started the scrutiny of the beneficiaries availing the scheme. Since then, the government has regularly suspended ineligible beneficiaries. State government will resume the scheme benefits for those found eligible after the verification, while action will be taken against fraudulent beneficiaries who have 'misled the government' and availed benefits through 'improper means'. Ms. Tatkare pointed out that all the ineligible beneficiaries were availing benefits of multiple schemes, some families had more than two beneficiaries, or men applied for the scheme. Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Saturday expressed that stern action will be taken against men who took advantage of the scheme, saying the Ladki Bahin scheme is for poor women, and it makes no sense for men to be the beneficiaries. So, money will be recovered. Action will be taken on the non-cooperation. He was responding to reports of 14,000 men being the beneficiaries of the scheme.

BJP urges K'taka govt to act against firms selling fake seeds, fertilisers

Accusing the ruling Congress of 'failing' Karnataka, state BJP President B Y Vijayendra on Sunday urged the Siddaramaiah-led government to file a criminal case and take strict action against companies that are supplying fake seeds and fertilisers to farmers. He said a police vigilance team should be formed to take strict action against the networks that cheat farmers. The BJP chief was responding to reports about fake seeds and fertilisers being supplied to farmers in some parts of the state. "The efforts to trouble the food-providing farmers and exploit them within the system have been ongoing for a long time. Companies supplying fertilizers and seeds are engaging in the despicable act of sabotaging agricultural activities by providing fake seeds to the enthusiastic farming community that are expecting a good harvest in the backdrop of a promising monsoon this time," Vijayendra said. "I urge the government to file a criminal case against such companies in this regard and take strict action, and also to take all necessary measures to ensure that the farming community gets quality seeds and necessary fertilizers in a timely manner," he said in a post on 'X'. Stating that it should be the government's top priority to ensure that the farming community, which is the largest human resource of the country and who live by trusting nature, does not face any problems, Vijayendra said, in this context, Prime Minister Narendra Modi- led central government, along with agricultural incentive schemes, has taken precautionary measures to protect farmers. "The state government too needs to take committed steps in this regard, so that the lives of farmers are not affected," he said. To strengthen the Agriculture Department and to take strict action against the networks that cheat farmers, a police vigilance team should be formed, the BJP leader said, adding hashtag "CongressFailsKarnataka". "This time, mother nature has embraced the farmers through a good monsoon, I urge the government to take all possible precautionary measures to thwart any fraudulent attempts that may disrupt the farmers from enjoying its benefits." Targeting the Congress government citing media reports about farmers protest in some parts, against urea shortage, BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly R Ashoka said, the Congress government should have been alert and paid attention towards ensuring storage of necessary amount of fertilizer and its timely distribution, when the monsoon arrived a month in advance this time. Instead, those in the government completely neglected the farmers in the heat of factional fights for power or chair, Ashoka said in a post on 'X'. "The curse of the farms will affect this Congress government," he added.
