Again fighting for card, but with a different caddie, Joel Dahmen shoots 61 at Wyndham Championship

Listen to Jordan Spieth interview live from Sedgefield on Golf Today as he tries to spark a run to the playoffs currently sitting in 50th in the FedExCup standings. Joel Dahmen likened his chances of making the playoffs to his beloved Seattle Seahawks needing to win by 50 points to do the same. Dahmen's given himself a chance, however, thanks to a 9-under 61 in the opening round of the Wyndham Championship, the PGA Tour's regular-season finale. He entered the week 101st in FedExCup points, with the top 70 earning a spot next week in Memphis. As the current outright leader in Greensboro, North Carolina, Dahmen is projected to jump inside the top 50. 'Thursday's a long ways from Sunday,' Dahmen said. 'I've been here a lot, so just happy to get off to a good start and, yeah, we'll see where things fall.' It's been a odd few weeks for the 37-year-old. He split from his longtime caddie, Geno Bonnalie, ahead of the Barracuda Championship, and then tied for 17th – his first top-50 finish since collapsing in April's Corales Puntacana Championship, where he bogeyed his final three holes to lose by one. Last week presented a few more closing challenges. Dahmen shot 67-65 in the 3M Open but doubled the par-5 18th in Round 3 to lose ground with a 71. He was on pace to post a nice bounce-back number Sunday, but hit two in the water at 18 in making triple bogey. A tie for 39th cost him two spots in the FEC standings, dropping him outside the fully-exempt cut line. While the playoffs would be a 'bonus,' Dahmen's primary goal is keeping his card. He made a final-event run last year to finish No. 124, when the top 125 earned playing privileges for this season. That benchmark has been reduced to the top 100, and Dahmen finds himself around the cutoff again. With his longtime coach, Rob Rashell, currently serving as caddie, Dahmen made 10 birdies and one bogey Thursday at Sedgefield Country Club. 'Man, I love Geno. We still text almost daily. He's doing well. Yeah, I mean, I miss him but sometimes the hardest — you have to do something hard to — look, it wasn't an easy decision. I won't say I'm not happy about it but, like, it's hard. He's my best friend, he's still my best friend,' Dahmen said. 'But I had to change something with me. It was more about me. It was my mentality, it was what I was doing, and I need to take ownership of what I was doing. I was not doing a good job of that. So a way for me to do it is as simple as just playing golf on my own a little bit. So yeah, I love him, I miss him. I think we'll see him out here again soon.' Alex Noren, No. 141 in FEC points, is one back after a 62. Cameron Young, seeking his first PGA Tour win and No. 40 in the standings, is tied for third at 7 under, along with Aaron Rai and Nico Echavarria. Jordan Spieth, No. 50, and Adam Scott, No. 85, are in a group three back.

Is 'one of the best players to never win on PGA Tour' going to finally win this week?

He's long been near the top of everyone's list of "The best golfer who has yet to win on the PGA Tour," but maybe this is the week he finally breaks through. Cameron Young caught fire late in his first round at the 2025 Wyndham Championship, his online scorecard on lighting up with those little fireball icons as he birdied six of his last seven holes, including five straight on Nos. 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18. His birdie at the last came by way of his wedge. After he missed the green to the right, he chipped in for a 3. Young signed for a 7-under 63 on Thursday at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, his best score in 2025 by two shots in his now 68 rounds on Tour this season. In those rounds, he's only shot in the 60s a total of 25 times. To dig a little deeper, after opening his year with five straight rounds in the 60s, he only managed 20 more sub-70 scores over his next 63 rounds. He has had a stretch in 2025 where he went 18 straight rounds without breaking 70, including an 82 in the opening round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational and an 81 in the third round of the Players Championship. But enough drilling into Young's season. His Thursday 63 at the Wyndham was a work of art, although he downplayed his smoking-hot finish. "To be honest, nothing really clicked, the ball just kind of started going in a little bit," he said. "I started off the day totally the opposite end of that spectrum. I hit it close a few times and missed a few. I think it kind of just evened out and happened to end up looking dramatic on the scorecard, but it wasn't much of a difference really throughout the day." Despite his scorecards as well as making only 13 of 20 cuts in 2025, Young started the week at No. 40 in the FedEx Cup Playoffs standings, safely inside the top-70 cutoff. After he signed his Thursday card, he shot up to 16th, which, should that hold, would make him eligible for all three postseason tournaments. "I think it's just been a progression throughout the year. It's one of those times early in the year where it feels like I'm doing a lot of stuff right and getting nothing for it and the results show the nothing and not the stuff that I felt like was getting better," he said. "It's been a long season and I think I've kind of grown and built some confidence throughout it. It's just a matter of some of that work starting to show and looking forward to doing more of it the next few days." Young's 63 was later matched by Aaron Rai and Nico Echavarria and then bested by Alex Noren's 62 and Joel Dahmen's 61. Young is playing in his 94th PGA Tour event. He has seven seconds, a pair of thirds and 12 top-5s in his career.

Adam Scott Embraces 'Do Or Die' Philosophy With Playoffs On Line

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Adam Scott's results this season have been far different than last year, and he's trending the wrong way. The Australian went from playing in the TOUR Championship a year ago to now being on the verge of missing the playoffs. However, Scott came into the Wyndham Championship with a chance to turn his situation around and reach the top 70. The 2013 Masters winner knows this, and he also knows the philosophy with which he must approach the week. "I actually think sometimes when it's like a last-chance thing, this will be my last chance to play on the PGA TOUR potentially for some weeks, it's do or die and that's a fun way to play," he said before the event, according to his pre-event press conference's transcripts. "Sometimes we or I have fell in the trap of like there's always next week if it doesn't work out and that's not the case here, so I think that's not a pressure but more motivation." Tilton/Getty Images Scott probably lneeds a top-25 finish at the Wyndham Championship to secure his ticket to the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis. The 14-time PGA Tour winner has achieved a similar result five times this season, most recently at the Genesis Scottish Open (T17) three weeks ago. However, that result is close to Scott's best of the year. The Australian hasn't earned a top-10 finish this season, and his best result has been a tied-for-12th finish at the US Open, although he was close to a much better result there. "I was like three back with seven to go and I finished poorly, which is not ideal, but I was right there on the back nine," Scott, who was in the final group Sunday at Oakmont, recalled, according to the transcripts. Scott also said he's confident he can make a final push to make the playoffs, even though it hasn't been his best season. "I feel like my game's been pretty good since May so I need to be on the front foot a little bit, I can't be sitting back waiting for it to happen," he said, according to the transcripts. "I've got a couple of days to put myself in contention for the weekend. Yeah, I feel confident with my game that I can do that." After the event, the top 70 in the FedEx Cup rankings will qualify for the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the first event of the playoffs. Afterward, the top 50 will play in the BMW Championship, and after that, the top 30 will compete in the TOUR Championship for the FedEx Cup title. All qualifiers for the first event secure their PGA Tour card for next season, if they haven't already. Those who advance to the second event qualify for all of next year's signature events, while those who play in the season-ending event also qualify for the Masters Tournament.
