Ipswich Town Women's footballers on brink of Championship
Ipswich Town Women's manager Joe Sheehan has said his side's near-certain promotion to the Championship will be a "special day". The Tractor Girls' stunning season culminates on Sunday as they host Cheltenham, with their superior goal difference meaning even a loss would still not stop the party. It will be the first time the club will compete in the second tier, ending their four-year stint in the FA Women's National League Southern Premier Division. Sheehan, who initially worked in a voluntary role at the Suffolk club, said: "I'm incredibly proud and privileged to have played a part in the growth over so many years."
'From 40 fans to 10,000'
Sheehan was appointed manager of the women's side in February 2019. The following month, his side drew 1-1 with Leyton Orient in front of 40 spectators in the fourth division. Their now record goalscorer, Natasha Thomas, was on the bench. In 2025, she went on to represent Jamaica at international level, having scored over 150 goals for Ipswich. Two Covid-19 curtailed seasons and three heart-breaking title pushes later, the Tractor Girls returned to Portman Road in March 2025 where they broke the league attendance during their 3-1 win against Plymouth Argyle in front of 10,807. Sheehan himself was unpaid during his first season-and-a-half. The players trained just twice a week, led by voluntary staff. The dedicated boss once drove a minibus for an U21's friendly match to Sunderland, where he could only pull together a team of just nine players. Now, they train four times a week, have tailored strength and conditioning training, and are fed nutritionally balanced meals.
'Remarkable'
Sheehan said: "It's been an incredible journey. "The growth, the success, the development of the group, the club and the staff. "The experiences that we've had along the way have been remarkable. "
'Four years thinking of this day'
Captain Maria Boswell will be the player to lift the league title on Sunday. The 22-year old, who lives with teammates Sophie Peskett and Kyra Robertson, has been part of a rock-solid defence that has only conceded 10 goals in the league this season. Both her and her teammates are still part-time footballers, but promotion will mean going full-time. She has dreamt of this moment since coming into the first team four years ago. "I've spent four years thinking of this day. I've thought about it every single day; what the feeling is going to be like," she said."You don't get opportunities like this very often, to celebrate promotion to the Championship. "I can't put it into words how much it would mean to be with the girls, on the pitch and lift that trophy."
'No room for error' in tier three?
The Tractor Girls have come close to promotion each season at third tier level, but have fallen at the final hurdle. On previous attempts, they finished second, third and fourth. Until the 2023/24 season, the winner of the Southern Premier Division then had to face off in a promotion-deciding fixture with the Northern division's winners. Sheehan said previously it gave "little to no room for error", requiring "near-perfect seasons".He added: "We have had sour experiences, some trauma and some difficult moments. We've been close, but have fallen short. "On two separate occasions, we have won 10 to 11 games in a row in this division, and still fallen short. It's been tough; lots of low points where you wonder what else you can do". Within these seasons, the Tractor Girls have had some key moments, including record-breaking FA Cup runs, hosting WSL side West Ham United at their home in Felixstowe, as well as two trips to giants Manchester City.
The perfect end to a near-perfect season?
Ipswich set the standard in the league this year, slipping to defeat only twice and conceding just 10 goals. Their main rivals this season have been Essex side Hashtag United, who are three points behind them going into the final round of fixtures. A nine-game unbeaten run at the start of the season saw Sheehan's side set the pace, including a 4-0 league cup win over East Anglian rivals Norwich City at Carrow Road. Hashtag were one of only two teams to beat Town, which didn't come until early March. Ipswich were the form scorers in the league, and have netted 81 times so far. Town recorded eye catching results including 11-0 and 13-0 wins over MK Dons, a 7-0 win over Cheltenham and a 6-0 win over Billericay.

Lions captain Dan Sheehan's sports star girlfriend and his family's rugby careers
Lions captain Dan Sheehan's sports star girlfriend and his family's rugby careers Dan Sheehan has been named British and Irish Lions captain for their opening Tour game in Australia this weekend - and he will be supported by his girlfriend, Katherine Egan British and Irish Lions star Dan Sheehan will captain the team in their tour opener, and partner Katherine Egan will be cheering him on (Image: Dansheehan09/Instagram ) Dan Sheehan will captain the British and Irish Lions when they take on the Western Force in their tour opener. And his girlfriend, Katherine Egan, who's a promising athlete in her own right, will be cheering him on in Perth on Saturday. Lions skipper Maro Itoje will not be participating in Saturday's match as Sheehan, who captained Ireland for the first time against Wales in this year's Six Nations, will lead the team at Optus Stadium. The Leinster hooker is among five starters making their Lions debuts, with Ireland colleagues Garry Ringrose, James Lowe, Joe McCarthy and Josh van der Flier also on that list. Sione Tuipulotu and Tadhg Beirne are the only two survivors from the XV that lost to Argentina in Dublin last Friday. However, they have been reassigned to inside centre and blindside flanker, respectively. "Dan Sheehan gets the opportunity to lead the side against Western Force, which is a great honour for him and his family – so congratulations to Dan as he captains the side on his Lions debut," said Itoje, per the Irish Mirror. "We know the quality and experience the Force have and the opportunity to play against the Lions always brings out special performances from the Super Rugby sides, so we expect them to be at their best." Athlete girlfriend Off the field, Sheehan has been in a long-term relationship with fellow sportsperson Katherine. Egan is currently studying medicine at University College Dublin and also plays for the school's ladies' hockey team. Katherine first appeared on Dan's Instagram feed back in October 2017, when they attended his school's debutante ball. Over the years, they've travelled to beautiful destinations such as Bali, Indonesia and Santorini together. Katherine is often seen supporting Dan from the stands and is sure to pop up in Australia over the coming weeks. Family's rugby past Born in September 1998, Sheehan is now 26 and hails from a family of four siblings. He has one brother, Bobby, and two sisters, Emma and Susie, along with parents Sinead and Barry, who are often seen cheering him on from the stands at home and abroad. Originally from Dublin, Sheehan spent three years living in Romania due to his father's job relocation to Bucharest. Both he and brother Bobby attended the American International School where, despite rugby not being available, Dan kept active with football, softball and swimming. Sheehan continued his education at Trinity College Dublin, where he pursued his passion for rugby. And it turns out rugby is something of a family affair. His dad, Barry, represented UCD during the 1980s and 1990s, and his grandfather Denis once played for Leinster. Rugby Career Sheehan signed his first professional contract with Leinster in June 2020 and made his debut in October that same year. He recently extended his contract with Leinster and the IRFU for another two years, which will keep him in the capital until at least 2027. His first appearance for Ireland was in a Six Nations match against Italy in February 2022. In the final match of that tournament, he scored a try and was named Player of the Match in Ireland's 26-5 victory over Scotland, securing Ireland's 12th Triple Crown. Article continues below During a showdown with England in March 2023, Sheehan's two tries secured the 2023 Six Nations title and Ireland's fourth Grand Slam. The following year, he suffered a serious ACL injury that sidelined him for six months before a triumphant return to the field in January 2025.

Cardiff City star being eyed by 12 Championship clubs as European interest emerges
Cardiff City star being eyed by 12 Championship clubs as European interest emerges Cardiff City are facing a big turnover of players this summer Alex Robertson of Cardiff City (Image: Cardiff) Reports claim up to 12 Championship clubs are keeping tabs on Cardiff City's Alex Robertson this summer. The midfielder signed for the Bluebirds last year but his first season in south Wales unfortunately ended in relegation. Brian Barry-Murphy is the man now at the helm at Cardiff City Stadium and Robertson will know his new boss well, having worked with him during their respective times at Manchester City. Robertson has been putting in extra training in his native Australia, training with new Portsmouth signing Adrian Segecic. He was filmed on Joner Football's YouTube channel doing some drills. When asked by the host of the channel about his stint at Cardiff, Robertson said: "Good, really good." Robertson's future could be the subject of speculation though, with The News in Portsmouth stating that the former City starlet will have talks with Barry-Murphy this coming week. The News report that a dozen second-tier outfits are keen on the midfielder, with one of the three relegated sides from the Premier League included in that list. Former club Pompey are said to be in the mix, with European and MLS interest also cited. Article continues below Robertson still has three years left on his Cardiff contract. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community. Barry-Murphy is set to revamp the Bluebirds squad in the coming weeks, with the new man hoping to put his stamp on things after arriving from Leicester City. Michael Reindorf has already left for Newport County on loan, while Roko Simic is also edging towards the exit door in the Welsh capital. "My belief is the smaller the squad, within reason, the more it aligns to having a culture of improvement and players having a strong opportunity to play," Barry-Murphy said when asked about the summer window. "It allows the younger players the opportunity to grow and play. If we have too many players and they don't play then it's a contradiction to the way I see it. "So have a strong squad from the players who are here, then complement it with the players coming through from the academy and the younger ones. Article continues below "Then, adding quality then means we can be specific on what it looks like to have an elite team in this division." Players will be heading to the exit door next week. All nine out-of-contract stars will be leaving for good, while the two loan players they had last season, Will Alves and Sivert Mannsverk, have returned to their parent clubs. Four will return to the fold from their respective loan stints away - Eli King (Stevenage), Joel Colwill (Exeter City), Ryan Wintle (Millwall) and Ryotaro Tsunoda (KV Kortrijk).
