Texas Longhorns baseball gets No. 1 seed in SEC tournament, two round bye
The SEC baseball regular season is over and the postseason tournament bracket has been set. The Texas Longhorns have won the regular season title and will be the top seed in the SEC tournament, which starts on Tuesday, May 20. The top four seeds in the single-elimination tournament get a bye through to the quarterfinals.
The Longhorns added to it's lead in the conference standings on the final day of the regular season with a convincing 9-1 win over the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman. The game featured a two-hour weather delay, but it didn't dampen the Longhorns bats. The Longhorns had two home runs and eight hits in the blowout win.
UT will now get a few days of rest before hitting the diamond in the third round of the SEC tourney in Hoover, Alabama. Texas will either face No. 8 seed Tennessee, No. 9 seed Alabama or No. 16 seed Missouri in the quarterfinals on Thursday, May 22 at 3 p.m. CT.
Winning the regular season SEC crown should move the Longhorns back into the No. 1 spot in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll on Monday and it could mean the No. 1 overall seed on Selection Monday, when the NCAA Tournament bracket is announced.

Utah Jazz reveal former Wisconsin basketball star John Tonje's jersey number
Former Wisconsin basketball star John Tonje will wear #17 for the Utah Jazz throughout the 2025-26 season. Tonje, who was drafted by the Jazz with the No. 53 overall pick of the 2025 NBA draft, will be the team's first #17 in five years. Forward Ed Davis, who enjoyed a 12-year NBA career, last wore the jersey number for the franchise in 2020. Throughout his collegiate career, Tonje wore #1 with Colorado State from 2019-23, #5 with Missouri during the 2022-23 slate and #9 with Wisconsin during the 2024-25 season, the year during which the 6-foot-5 wing rose to stardom. The second-team All-America and first-team All-Big Ten team member burst onto the national scene in several high-profile contests during his final year of college, including during UW's NCAA Tournament defeat at the hands of the BYU Cougars in Denver, Colorado. Tonje dropped a game-best 37 points, the most by any Badger in an NCAA Tournament game ever. Across 37 games, the Nebraska native averaged 19.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game off 46.5% shooting from the field, 39% from 3 and 91% from the free-throw line. He dropped 41 points against No. 9 Arizona in November, 32 against No. 7 Purdue on the road in February and another 32 against the Michigan State Spartans in the 2025 Big Ten Tournament. The former Badger will now take his talents to Salt Lake City, the same area where he will begin his NBA Summer League journey. The Jazz kick-start their summer slate with a three-day circuit at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, from July 5-7 before making the trek to Las Vegas the following week. There, Tonje will sport #17 against the Philadelphia 76ers, Memphis Grizzlies and Oklahoma City Thunder a week before the Jazz square off against the New Orleans Hornets (July 11), Golden State Warriors (July 13), San Antonio Spurs (July 14) and Washington Wizards (July 16) in Las Vegas. He will look to showcase his ceiling behind guards Jaden Spring, Isaiah Collier and Walter Clayton Jr. Contact/Follow @TheBadgersWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Wisconsin Badgers news, notes and opinion

Former UNC basketball star expected to sign new NBA contract
Will this former UNC standout turn himself into an NBA starter? The 2020-2021 college basketball season was a mixed bag for the North Carolina Tar Heels. They returned to the NCAA Tournament for a 10th-consecutive season, a year after COVID-19 cancelled 2020's Big Dance, but were blown out (85-62) by Wisconsin. UNC welcomed one of its deepest, most-talented recruiting classes to Chapel Hill ahead of its 2020-2021 campaign, headlined by 5-stars Caleb Love and Walker Kessler. The greatest Tar Heel from that recruiting class ended up being RJ Davis, an all-time program great who ended up winning 2024 ACC Player of the Year Honors – and now plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. One player not talked about enough from that 20'-21' roster: former 5-star recruit Day'Ron Sharpe, now a member of the Brooklyn Nets. Enter his fifth NBA season and with his rookie contract now expired, Sharpe is planning a return to Brooklyn, announcing his intention to sign a new deal on Monday afternoon. According to ESPN Senior Insider Shams Charania, Sharpe's deal will be worth two years and $12 million dollars. He'll stay with former Tar Heel Drake Powell, the latter of whom the Nets selected 22nd overall in last week's NBA Draft. Sharpe is largely a reserve, starting just 14 of his 191 NBA appearances for the Nets, but is watching his production increase each season. Sharpe averaged career highs of 7.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and 0.8 blocks per game during Brooklyn's 2024-2025 campaign, which included five double-doubles, highlighted by a 25-point, 15-rebound performance against the eventual NBA Champion Oklahoma City Thunder in February. Though Sharpe was a rare one-and-done at North Carolina, he made a name for himself as an offensive rebound machine, leading the country in offensive rebound percentage (.183) and the ACC in offensive rebounds per game (3.4). Sharpe finished second to Florida State's Scottie Barnes, now a member of the Toronto Raptors, in 2021 ACC Rookie and Sixth Man of the Year Voting.
