's directives on voter-list revision in Bihar an "NRC-like approach", Bengal BJP on Friday termed the exercise a "routine drive to weed out illegal immigrants".
BJP's Bengal minder, Amit Malviya, said: "The poll body has begun a lawful and routine drive to weed out illegal immigrants." Taking to X, Malviya said illegal immigrants were "maliciously included in Bengal's electoral rolls by the ruling TMC and CPI(M) before that". He said ensuring "clean and accurate voter rolls" was not NRC but "electoral integrity".
Bengal BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said EC was trying to ensure free and fair polls in the state, which was "marred by violence". "Terrorists have made Bengal their safe haven. This is evident from recent arrests made by NIA. The way demography has changed, it is now a question of Bengal's security. EC is working in the national interest and is ensuring internal security is not compromised," he said.

NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI) over its voter verification drive in Bihar and West Bengal, claiming it resembled a covert attempt to introduce the National Register of Citizens ( NRC ) through the back door. 'We have evidence that the latest BJP internal survey for Bengal shows they would win 46 to 49 seats. In desperation, they are resorting to desperate things,' he said, warning that the ECI 'should not turn into the branch office of the BJP.' "It is a sinister move to bring NRC ( National Register of Citizens ) through the backdoor," said Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien on Saturday about the special intensive revision of electoral roll announced by the Election Commission. Questioning the timing of the drive, the Trinamool Congress, at a press conference here, said the INDIA bloc parties will take up the issue both inside and outside Parliament. The Election Commission last Monday issued instructions to carry out a Special Intensive Revision in Bihar to weed out ineligible names and ensure all eligible citizens are included in the electoral roll, allowing them to exercise their franchise in the polls slated later this year. The terms of the legislative assemblies of Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal are ending in May-June next year.

Monojit Mishra, 31, a former student and current Organising Secretary of the South Kolkata district of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), was produced before the Alipore court on Friday, along with the other two accused, and was sent to police custody till July 1. The BJP has launched a fresh attack on the ruling TMC, saying that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's party had links with the accused. The BJP also shared pictures of the accused Manojit Mishra with Abhishek Banerjee and West Bengal minister Chandrima Bhattacharya. 'OUTRAGEOUS! 'There was an immediate postmortem and dissection to look at the names and the religion. You have to condemn the incident. You are now trying to show photographs," she said in reference to BJP sharing photographs. She also lauded the police for arresting the accused within 12 hours and said such action was missing in BJP-ruled states, adding that TMC's student wing does not promote violence. A complaint was filed on Thursday night, and the Kasba police station arrested three people in connection with the incident. They were identified as Manojit Mishra, 31, Zaib Ahmed, 19, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, 20. According to the complaint filed by the survivor, on Wednesday evening when one of the accused expressed romantic interest and made unwanted advances, which she rejected. 'I cried and asked him to let me go. I told them I have a boyfriend and I love my boyfriend. But he did not agree," she said in the complaint. The victim said she fell at the feet of Manojit Mishra begging him to let her go. 'I touched his feet but he didn't let me go. They again took me to the room, they took me to the guard room forcefully, he undressed me and started forcefully raping me," she said in her complaint. According to the victim's medical report, aberration marks have been found around the neck and breasts of the first-year law student at Calcutta Law College in Kolkata. The medical report has asserted that the possibility of sexual assault cannot be ruled out, sources told CNN-News18.
