Kolkata Law Student Rape Case: The alleged rape of a 24-year-old student of South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata's Kasba has triggered a political slugfest in West Bengal, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) saying that the accused was seen with Trinamool Congress (TMC) general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
The student was allegedly gang-raped on the college premises on June 25, saying she was struck with a hockey stick and that the main accused had threatened to kill her boyfriend. Three accused persons have been arrested in connection with the case.
Monojit Mishra, 31, a former student and current Organising Secretary of the South Kolkata district of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), was produced before the Alipore court on Friday, along with the other two accused, and was sent to police custody till July 1.
The BJP has launched a fresh attack on the ruling TMC, saying that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's party had links with the accused. The BJP also shared pictures of the accused Manojit Mishra with Abhishek Banerjee and West Bengal minister Chandrima Bhattacharya.
'OUTRAGEOUS! Manojit Mishra, one of the prime accused in the brutal gang-rape of a college student in Kasba has direct links with the most powerful in the TMC," said BJP IT Cell in-charge Amit Malviya, citing reports that college authorities were instructed to lock the gates while the crime was taking place.
'This is not just a crime. This is a cover-up of the highest order. TMC is a party of rapists and protectors of rapists. We will not allow political power to bury this crime. We will not allow Mamata Banerjee's regime to silence the voice of justice."
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said, 'Yet again Mamata Banerjee's govt is found standing with the accused! Accused no 1 Manojit Mishra is a TMC member! Whether it is RG Kar Rape and Murder case where Mamta Banerjee tried to silence victims parents, Or now when accused in Kasba gangrape case is found to be a TMC member, Mamata Banerjee govt appropriates crime against women!"

Meanwhile, TMC leader Shashi Panja condemned the crime and urged the opposition not to politicise the tragedy. 'There was an immediate postmortem and dissection to look at the names and the religion. You have to condemn the incident. You are now trying to show photographs," she said in reference to BJP sharing photographs.
She also lauded the police for arresting the accused within 12 hours and said such action was missing in BJP-ruled states, adding that TMC's student wing does not promote violence.
'Beaten With Hockey Stick, Aberration Marks On Neck'
The incident reportedly took place on June 25 between 7:30 pm and 8:50 pm. A complaint was filed on Thursday night, and the Kasba police station arrested three people in connection with the incident. They were identified as Manojit Mishra, 31, Zaib Ahmed, 19, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, 20.
According to the complaint filed by the survivor, on Wednesday evening when one of the accused expressed romantic interest and made unwanted advances, which she rejected. 'I cried and asked him to let me go. I told them I have a boyfriend and I love my boyfriend. But he did not agree," she said in the complaint.
The victim said she fell at the feet of Manojit Mishra begging him to let her go. 'I touched his feet but he didn't let me go. They again took me to the room, they took me to the guard room forcefully, he undressed me and started forcefully raping me," she said in her complaint.
According to the victim's medical report, aberration marks have been found around the neck and breasts of the first-year law student at Calcutta Law College in Kolkata. The medical report has asserted that the possibility of sexual assault cannot be ruled out, sources told CNN-News18.

Efforts underway to form popular government in Manipur: Biren Singh

Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Saturday (June 28, 2025) said efforts are underway for setting up of a popular government in the State which is now under President's rule. Speaking at the sidelines of a programme at BJP State headquarters, Mr. Singh expressed hope that a new government will be formed in Manipur soon. "We are working to form a government at the earliest. We are a national party. After looking into the ground situation, I have faith that a government will be formed soon. BJP and its allies want a popular government as well. We are working for restoration of popular government," he said. "We, BJP, haven't criticised anybody. We are concentrating only on the present crisis. We are approaching the Central government and concerned persons to bring an amicable solution and peace in the State. In the meantime, we are also working to restore a popular government with frequent gatherings of MLAs. Everybody wants the restoration of peace. Peace is compulsory. In the last seven or eight months, there have been no reports of fighting between communities," the former CM said. Mr. Singh said the Central government is working day and night to restore peace in the State. To a media query, Mr. Singh said, "I have said earlier that illegal immigrants and drug cartels have affected the entire Northeast as well as the whole nation. Slowly, everyone has come to understand this issue. This change is a positive sign, and together we can fight these elements." The Centre had on February 13 imposed President's rule in Manipur after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned. The State assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, has been put under suspended animation. More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023.

ECI ‘shouldn't turn into party office': TMC on Bihar electoral roll revision

Jun 28, 2025 02:56 PM IST Following the decision of the Election Commission of India to revise the electoral roll ahead of Bihar's elections, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O' Brien on Saturday stated that in the desperation to change or attempt to change things, one does desperate things. TMC MP Derek O'Brien asked as to why this exercise is being suddenly done right now, before Bihar elections. (ANI) "TMC has the highest regard for the Election Commission of India as a constitutional body, but the constitutional body should not turn into the branch office of the BJP. Why is this exercise being suddenly done right now? We have evidence that it is being done now because the latest BJP's internal survey for Bengal shows the BJP will get 46 to 49 seats in Bengal Assembly polls. In desperation to change or attempt to change things, you do these desperate things..." the TMC MP said in a press conference. He further stated that the ECI was conducting an exercise called the special intensive revision of the electoral roll in Bihar, which would also be followed in West Bengal. "The ECI is conducting an exercise called special intensive revision of the electoral roll starting in Bihar, and then they said they'll follow it up in Bengal. Under this, new and existing voters have to submit proof of birth & birthplace for those born before July 1987. Proof of birth & birthplace for self and one parent for those born between July 1987 to December 2004. Proof of birth & birthplace for self and both parents for those born after December 2004. If these documents are not submitted within a month, your name will be deleted from the voter list," Brien said. Derek O' Brien further stated that the EC was trying to bring back NRC in from the back door. "The EC (Election Commission) is trying to bring the NRC in from the back door. In 1935 under the Nazis, you were supposed to be given an ancestor pass. Some proof of paper to show that you are an Indian citizen is this the new version of that Nazi Ancestor Pass?... All the INDIA bloc parties will take this up in and outside Parliament..." he added.
