Bill Gates and Warren Buffett give credit to this 'one word for' for their success; it might change your life too
When asked to sum up their success in just one word,
Bill Gates
and
Warren Buffett
both responded with the same answer. Despite coming from different industries, their paths to becoming two of the world's most influential billionaires were shaped by an intense dedication to their respective passions. Gates revolutionised personal computing while Buffett transformed the investment world with long-term strategies. Their routines, habits, and decisions were rooted in purpose rather than chance. Their journeys offer lessons that apply well beyond boardrooms or billion-dollar deals. Whether you're a student, professional, or entrepreneur, understanding what shaped their success can provide insight into how to shape your own path.
One word that defined the success of Bill Gates and Warren Buffet
In a 2016 conversation moderated by Charlie Rose, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett were each asked to write down one word that best explained their success. Without any prior discussion, both chose the same word: focus. This shared answer reflected a deep truth about their lives. Gates had focused himself in computer programming during his teenage years, eventually leading to the creation of tech giant Microsoft. Buffett, on the other hand, began investing at the age of 11 and built his empire through disciplined long-term strategies. Their ability to concentrate on one area for decades helped them to develop unmatched expertise and build lasting success.
Bill Gates' early passion for technology
Bill Gates has often said that the things you focus on as a teenager can shape your entire future. In a 2016 interview with Charlie Rose, he shared how his obsession with computer programming between the ages of 13 and 18 laid the foundation for what would become Microsoft. His interest in technology was sparked when he got access to a computer at his school and started learning codes. He was fascinated by the potential of software to solve problems. In 1975, he dropped out of Harvard and co-founded Microsoft with Paul Allen. Gates led the company through major innovations like Windows that made personal computing accessible to millions. That early focus turned into one of the most successful tech companies in the world. By age 20, Gates had already become a millionaire. Today, his net worth is estimated at about $127 billion, making him one of the richest persons on Earth.
Warren Buffett's lifelong commitment to investing
Warren Buffett showed a strong interest in money and business from an early age. He bought his first stock at the age of 11 and never stopped learning about investing. Fascinated by numbers and value he spent hours reading financial reports and books like The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham which shaped his thinking. Buffett studied economics and built a strategy based on buying undervalued but strong companies. As the head of Berkshire Hathaway he turned a small textile firm into a powerful holding company with stakes in Geico, Coca-Cola, American Express and Apple. Known for his discipline and patience he rarely follows market trends. His focus on long-term value helped him become one of the most successful investors in history. With a net worth near 160 billion dollars Buffett's life shows the strength of staying focused on a single goal.
The story of a shared word by Gates and Buffett
At an event hosted by Gates' father, both Gates and Buffett were asked to write down one word that explained their success. Without consulting each other, they both wrote the same thing—focus. Buffett later explained that they had each found their strength early and stuck with it. Gates focused on software. Buffett focused on investments. Their ability to commit and stay on track made all the difference.
Lessons anyone can apply to be successful in life
You don't have to be a billionaire to apply these lessons. Start with these three simple ideas:
Start early if you can: The earlier you begin, the more time your skills or investments have to grow. But even a late start can be powerful if you're consistent.
Stay consistent: Both Gates and Buffett focused deeply and stuck with their mission over decades. They didn't change direction often, and that gave their efforts time to succeed.
Think long term: Buffett believes in long-term investing and sticking with quality companies. Gates built a company with a long-term vision for the future of computing.
The takeaway is clear. Whether your dream is to build software, run a business, or master a craft, the key is to find your focus and stick with it. In a world full of distractions, staying true to a single direction can be the biggest advantage of all.

Arun Maira: Dedication to the state's purpose is the key lesson we must learn from China

India is at a crossroads. Both the political Left and Right agree that the economy needs substantial reform, but disagree on the direction. The progressive Left wants more socialism with more liberal democracy; the conservative Right wants more free-market capitalism and seems willing to tolerate curbs on liberty. The Middle seems muddled. The 20th century was a test of competing economic ideologies—socialism versus capitalism; and competing forms of governance—liberal democracy versus authoritarianism. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, victory was declared for the Washington Consensus of free market capitalism and liberal democracy. India's reformers adopted the Washington formula in 1991. By and large, they gave up on socialism, abandoned industrial policies aimed at growing domestic industries and opened the Indian market for foreign companies without technology-transfer requirements. China did not yield. It stayed its socialist course with single-party governance and continued to build domestic industries. Also Read: Ajit Ranade: The success of 'Made in China 2025' alarmed the West The growth of China's economy is a miracle, economists say. In the 1980s, China and India's economies were comparable in size and per capita income. Now, China's per capita income and GDP are about five times India's. China's high-tech manufacturing sector has grown 48 times larger. The US, meanwhile, has grown alarmed with China's remarkable economic growth and industrial strength despite Beijing not following Washington's economic formula. That consensus has ended even in Washington, where ideological cracks have appeared with increasing inequality and unrest among workers in the US. The US is pressing India to come closer to it. India is wary. China shares a border with India that has seen the two armies skirmish. India must become self-reliant and stronger much faster than it has so far. Reforms must result in faster income growth among the Indian masses and stronger domestic industries. India's leaders should study China for lessons before pushing harder with economic reforms based on the West's failing model. Also Read: China began de-risking its economy well before Trump's trade fury US capitalism and Chinese socialism: Three recent books offer insights into how socialism and capitalism have been combined to achieve China's inclusive and fast growth. China's leaders are good learners, says German political economist Isabella M. Weber in How China Escaped Shock Therapy: The Market Reform Debate. Like Mahatma Gandhi, they kept their minds open, allowing ideas to come in from all directions without being blown off their feet. They listened to Western economists but applied only what suited China. Weber says, 'The famous Harvard development economist Dani Rodrik represents the economics profession more broadly when he answers his own question of whether 'anyone (can) name the (Western) economists or the piece of research that played an instrumental role in China's reforms" by claiming that 'economic research, at least as conventionally understood" did not play 'a significant role." Chinese economist Keyu Jin, a professor at the London School of Economics who grew up in China and experienced the Chinese system from within, explains how the Chinese socio-economic-political system works in The New China Playbook: Beyond Socialism and Capitalism. She explains why Western economic models, which strip out cultural and social forces from economics, cannot comprehend how China works—or even how Western economies work. She makes visible the 'invisible hand' that free-market economists cannot explain. She explains why the Chinese government keeps financial markets and the private sector reined in to ensure the market produces welfare for all, especially poorer and least powerful citizens. She says, 'The number of financial crises in China is exactly zero. It is also an oddity (from a Western perspective) that despite the nation's preternatural economic growth, its stock market has been one of the worst performing in the world." Also Read: Chinese history shows how a closed economy could squander a nation's greatness The Chinese government has added citizen satisfaction and environmental sustainability to GDP as a measure of its own performance (and of local governments). Though private firms grew nine-fold in China from 2000 to 2019 (their number now exceeds the US's by far), 'A more striking fact," says Lin, 'is that private owners with state connections owned about a third of the capital registered by these companies, showing how pervasive equity linkages between state and private businesses have become in China's corporate sector." While the government has reduced the number of state-owned enterprises and pushed the remainder to add profits to their social objectives, it also demands that private firms comply with societal needs. Large, private, property and tech firms that strayed from the socialist path have been cut down. Three distinctive features of China's governance: The purpose of the state, throughout China's long history from imperial times to the Communist era, has been the welfare of citizens. The best emperor was seen as one who provides the most welfare to all citizens, not one who wins the most wars. The leadership of the Communist Party has continued this role, says Chinese political scientist Zheng Yongnian in The Chinese Communist Party as Organizational Emperor: Culture, Reproduction, and Transformation. Jin explains further (in The New China Playbook) how the ruling party's commitment to this role has shaped Beijing's socio-economic policies, resulting in widespread support for the party even among the young. Also Read: Rahul Jacob: Manufacturing is crying out for a reality check The governance of China is highly decentralized. Local communities are given freedom to craft solutions suited to their needs; the performance of local party officials is measured by the satisfaction of their communities with progress. Chinese leaders and economists are 'systems thinkers.' They see the economy as only a component of a complex social system. For them, the purpose of economic growth is the production of societal well-being, especially for less powerful people. Whenever the economy begins to fail this purpose, reforms are made to bring it back to its socialist moorings. India must not slavishly follow Western models. Nor can India be China. India must find its own way to create a more equitable society. 'At some point reality has to hit,' says ex-Arkane founder Raphael Colantonio on Game Pass — 'this model just doesn't work long-term'

(Image via @saudigamer's 'X' Account) Raphael Colantonio, ex-Arkane Studios founder, has recently delivered a stark assessment of Xbox Game Pass. He suggested that the gaming giant's flagship subscription model harbors fundamental laws. His comments amidst the recent project cancellations and Microsoft layoffs point to long-term viability concerns that can reshape the industry landscape. He even hinted at the inevitable reckoning of the approach that's been championed by Microsoft. Raphael Colantonio issues stark warnings The ex-Arkane Studios founder didn't mince his words on Xbox Game Pass. He straightaway labelled it as an 'unsustainable model' that has been actively damaging the industry. As per his argument, this damage has been masked for many years by Microsoft's vast financial resources. He called it their 'infinite money' that's subsidizing it all and artificially propping up the service, but economics is not adding up for most publishers and developers. Making some bleak core predictions, he said, coexistence with the traditional sales models for Xbox Game Pass is impossible. As he contends, Game Pass faces a binary future. It would either dominate to the point of eliminating all competitors, or Microsoft would be forced to abandon it entirely. In his words, " At some point reality has to hit." Colantonio's comments put a lot of emphasis on the inherent long-term weakness of this model and show increased skepticism from the industry veterans. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 새로 나온 '실비보험', 합리적인 가격과 실속있는 보장으로 최적가 비교가입!... 굿리치 [등록번호:제2006038313호] 가입하기 Undo These veterans believe the subscription services can devalue games or destabilize the development budgets. Job cuts and corporate pressures create a ripple effect Colantonio's critique has emerged amidst the significant turmoil in Microsoft's gaming division. The recent months saw deeper cuts, including some high-profile project cancellations. Rare's Everwild and Initiative's 'Perfect Dark' reboot, apart from studio closures, as per him, these actions were not isolated incidents. Journalists Tom Warren and Jez Corden have reported that these stemmed from intense financial pressure. As per reports, Microsoft's CFO Amy Hood recently set some aggressive and potentially unrealistic targets for Xbox. As noted, the pressure intensified quite significantly, following Activision Blizzard's massive acquisition. The sheer cost of the deal, together with Game Pass investments trying to be profitable, has created a challenging new financial reality. Further compounding the struggles of Xbox is Microsoft's strategic pivot. $80 billion, a very significant resource, has been redirected to generative AI, a priority that's been championed by CEO Satya Nadella and Hood. Such a shift within investment focus, completely away from gaming, has further squeezed the operating environment of Xbox, putting it in a precarious position, with further turbulence expected ahead. Gaming Industry concerns for Xbox Game Pass are rising Colantonio is not alone with his skepticism. Even Michael Douse, the Publishing Director at Baldur's Gate 3 developer Larian Studios, has echoed the concern about sustainability. He did highlight a widespread industry question— "What happens when all that money runs out?" The fear now deters many publishers from completely embracing the model of Game Pass. Both Colantonio and Douse are seeing a potential compromise being made. As per their suggestion, subscription services can find a sustainable niche, keeping the primary focus on back catalogue titles, which are older games that are beyond the initial sales peak. As per their argument, launching major new releases on day one of subscription undercuts traditional sales. It creates unsustainable economics for most publishers and developers not named Microsoft. Can Xbox Game Pass survive without hurting the industry? Future of Xbox Game Pass now remains a pivotal question. As Microsoft continues to balance colossal investments, shifting AI focus and corporate expectations, the viability of the subscription cornerstone does face its sternest test. The warning of Colantonio for now serves as a potent reminder that even all that infinite money cannot defy economic reality forever. Despite all warnings, Microsoft is pushing Game Pass, banking upon subscriber growth. Yet, with no clear path to profitability and high skepticism from industry, subscription gaming's future remains uncertain. To wrap up, Colantonio's critique puts forward an important question: Is Xbox Game Pass sustainable?, or is it a bubble that has been waiting to burst?' With Microsoft trying to navigate financial pressures and has been facing a lot of industry backlash, the next few years ahead could determine whether subscription gaming will collapse under its own weight or thrive. Fake job offers in UAE? Know the legal signs to look out for

Before relocating to the UAE, verifying your job offer with MOHRE is a critical first step/Representative Image If you've received a job offer from a UAE-based company, it's natural to feel excited. But before booking your flight and packing your bags, take a moment to confirm whether the offer is legally valid and enforceable. In the UAE, a signed offer letter between an employer and a prospective employee may be considered an agreement , but not necessarily a contract . Offer letter vs. employment contract In general legal terms, an agreement (like an offer letter) can be informal, while a contract is a formal agreement enforceable by law. In other words, all contracts are agreements, but not all agreements are contracts. When recruiting in the UAE, employers must issue an official offer letter detailing employment terms and conditions. These terms must then appear identically in the employment contract. The employer and employee may also add more favourable terms for the employee if both agree. This is supported by Article 2(1) of Ministerial Decree No. 46 of 2022 regarding work permits, job offers, and employment contract forms, which states: 'Utilise the approved standard employment contract that conforms with the job offer when requesting the issuance of the work permit. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo It is permissible to add more benefits to the employee in the contract than those mentioned in the job offer; it is also permissible to add annexure to the contract provided that it does not conflict with the provisions of the decree-law and its executive regulations." Use only MOHRE-approved offer letters An offer letter must follow the format prescribed by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). As per Article 1 of Administrative Resolution No. 38 of 2022, it is mandatory to use the e-forms available on the MOHRE system: "By the guidelines attached herein, electronic forms (e-forms) provided in Mohre system for work permits, offer letters, and employment contracts shall be adopted and implemented." When applying for a work permit, employers must submit a signed offer letter and other required documents to MOHRE. After approval and payment of the required fees, an official employment contract is created. How to verify your job offer Before making any commitments, you should contact MOHRE to verify whether the offer letter you've received is legitimate and recorded in their system. If your offer letter is not in MOHRE's approved format, you have the right to request one that is. In some cases, you may also approach the UAE Embassy in your country (such as the UK) for assistance in verifying the authenticity of your job offer, if such services are provided. If the employer rescinds the offer It's important to understand that if your prospective employer rescinds the offer letter and you haven't signed an employment contract or been issued a work permit, MOHRE may not accept your complaint. This is because an employer and employee are only considered parties to an official employment relationship once a valid contract is signed and registered with MOHRE. Legal recourse for rescinded offers If the offer is revoked and you suffer monetary loss or damage as a result, you may consider filing a civil case against the prospective employer in a UAE court that has jurisdiction over such matters. This can be pursued under civil liability claims, particularly if you can prove that the employer's actions led to demonstrable harm such as travel arrangements made in anticipation of employment. In summary: Always ask for a MOHRE-approved offer letter. Verify the offer letter with MOHRE before making travel or visa arrangements. You are not legally considered an employee until a contract is signed and a work permit is issued. If your offer is revoked unfairly, you may file a civil case for compensation. Staying vigilant during your job search and relocation process can save you significant hardship later. Always verify first—then move with confidence.
