Ankeet Chavan to coach Mumbai Under-14; Omkar Salvi retained as Ranji coach

Indian Express2 days ago
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has appointed former left-arm spinner Ankeet Chavan as head coach of Mumbai Under-14 team. Chavan was one of the three Rajasthan Royals players who was banned for life for the alleged spot-fixing in 2013. They were allowed to resume their competitive cricket two years ago after the Indian cricket board had reduced their ban to seven years.
Chavan continued to play club cricket in Mumbai for Karnataka Sports Club and later cleared his Level-1 exam as for coaching.
'I'm looking forward to it (on his new assignment). It's a second innings for me and there is always a turn around. I really want to thank MCA for showing faith in me. Coaching was certainly on my mind and I know what challenges it has going ahead. As it's Under-14 cricket I want to work on the basics of players and show them the path so that they can improve their game,' Chavan told The Indian Express.
In 2013, the BCCI disciplinary committee had found S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Chavan guilty of spot-fixing in the IPL and had handed them life bans. However in 2015, a Delhi trial court dropped all charges against these players for lack of evidence. However, the BCCI continued to impose a life ban. In June 2021, the BCCI reduced the ban of all cricketers involved in spot fixing scandal to seven years.
Chavan played 18 First-Class matches and 20 List A games apart from 13 IPL matches.
The MCA announced its appointments of coaches and selectors across age group cricket on Wednesday. The MCA has decided to retain its head coach of the Ranji Trophy team Omkar Salvi for next domestic season. MCA president Ajinkya Naik in a statement said, 'His (Salvi) outstanding leadership and coaching over the past two seasons have played a vital role in the team's strong performances. His ability to bring out the best in players has been exceptional.'
On the back of his Ranji Trohpy show, Salvi was appointed as bowling coach of Royal Challengers of Bangalore last season.
Sandip Patil will also continue as the chairman of the selection committee.

Shubman Gill hit on forehead in IND vs ENG 2nd Test, Rishabh Pant's brotherly love wins hearts

Shubman Gill got an injury scare after the Indian captain was hit on the forehead on Day 2 of the ongoing second Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Gill, who scored his maiden double hundred in Tests the previous day, looked in pain and was immediately attended by the BCCI medical team on the ground. The incident occurred after lunch in an over bowled by Ravindra Jadeja with Harry Brook batting. The England batter drove powerfully with the ball racing to Gill at the first slip at a rapid pace. The Indian captain got a very little time to react. In the process, the ball missed Gill's hand and hit on his forehead. The 25-year-old looked in immense pain. Vice-captain Rishabh Pant, who was standing just beside him, was the first to check on his captain and asked the physio to enter the field for treatment. Gill was treated on the field immediately and resumed fielding shortly after. As far as the match is concerned, Harry Brook and Jamie Smith hit respective centuries to revive England after the hosts were five wickets down with just 84 runs on board. Having started the day at 77/3, England lost Joe Root and captain Ben Stokes of successive deliveries. However, it was the unbeaten 271-run stand for the sixth wicket between Smith and Brook that resurrected the English innings. At Tea, England were 355/5. Smith was at 157 not out and Brook unbeaten on 140. When Smith came in, England were over 500 runs behind.

IND vs ENG: Harry Brook surpasses Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant, becomes...

Harry Brook. (PIC - X) New Delhi: Although the battle is going on between two teams on the Edgbaston pitch, at the same time, there is a competition going on which will be seen dominating the world cricket in the coming days. This is a matter between two such young batsmen who will later cement their place in the Fab 4. It is also a strange coincidence that on the same pitch on which Shubman Gill won the hearts of cricket experts by scoring a double century, Harry Brook's uproar surprised everyone. How did Harry Brook perform? England star Harry Brook performed brilliantly in the second Test between India and England and scored his 9th Test century. After falling behind by 88/5, Brook along with Jamie Smith launched a brilliant counter attack at Edgbaston. 24-year-old Brook, who was out on 99 at Headingley, this time tried to reach three figures in Birmingham and that too in a very aggressive manner. Be it spin or pace, Brook did not let any bowler dominate him. What was England's reply? Harry Brook, who came in to bat at 25/3 in reply to India's 587 in the India vs England Test at Birmingham, ensured that England stayed in the match. Brook was nervous initially but grew in confidence. After the departure of Joe Root and skipper Ben Stokes, the 24-year-old Brook was tasked with rescuing England from danger. And he did so in style. The England star ripped apart the Indian attack in his own special way. Despite Smith being out of control at the other end, Brook plundered 172 runs in just 27 overs in the first session on the third day. Brook eventually completed his century off 137 balls and shared a 200+ run partnership with Smith. What things did Harry Brook achieve at Edgbaston? The big innings against India at Edgbaston was the 9th Test century of Harry Brook's career, in which he scored in his 27th Test and has an average of a century every 3 Tests. The 24-year-old is the third fastest player to score 9 Test centuries for England, achieving this feat in just 44 innings. He has also become the fastest player in terms of strike rate to reach 2500 runs in Test cricket. He has achieved this feat in just 2,832 balls at a strike rate of 88.84. Rishabh Pant, one of the most destructive Test batsmen, has a strike rate of 74.03. Seeing Gill and Brook batting at Edgbaston, one thing is clear in the coming days, these two batsmen will rule world cricket.
