AFP says 'no evidence of offending' at more than 50 Sydney children care centres where charged man worked

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has moved to ease the anxieties of families at more than 50 Sydney outside school hours care centres where a man charged with child abuse offences worked. A court suppression order was lifted on the identity of a former NSW Police probationary constable who allegedly produced child abuse material featuring young children at six Sydney out-of-hours school care centres. David James, from the north shore suburb of Artarmon, was charged with more than a dozen offences in October by the AFP and worked with children at centres in the city's north and CBD. The alleged offences include 10 counts of using a child under the age of 14 to make child abuse material and two counts of possessing child abuse material. The 26-year-old allegedly took explicit photos of 10 children aged between five and six over three years between 2021 and 2024. He remains in custody. On Thursday, the AFP released a list of 58 centres and school facilities that Mr James worked between 2018 and 2024 across Sydney. Police believe the alleged offences occurred at six of the 58 facilities, with "no evidence" to suggest anything occurred at the remaining 52. A website has been set up with a list of where the man worked and links to support services and advice. AFP Acting Assistant Commissioner Brett James stressed the identification of the centres where the man worked is not because there is evidence of any further offending. "I just want to make it very clear to those parents, in regards to those 52 centres, that the AFP, if we have not contacted you, that means we hold no evidence of offending against your child," he told ABC News Breakfast. "That's a really important piece. But if you have concerns, please go to the website." Acting Assistant Commissioner James said the man's working with children certification was "taken off him" after the first search warrant that we executed by authorities. National Outside School Hours Services Alliance chair Kylie Brannelly said childcare centres were frustrated they were not aware of the offending prior to media reports about the alleged incidents. Ms Brannelly said the centres had "grave concerns" they did not have the information necessary to ensure child safety and that there had been a lack of information from authorities. "We hurt for the children and families that are victims of these horrendous crimes," she said. "Services and our members, they want to do what's best for children and families, they really care. They put a lot of processes in place to keep children safe. "So a lot of this information does come as a shock." She said while the alleged incidents were believed to be isolated, they were concerning. "We think that there is a small number of predators doing the wrong and the systems are coming into place to make sure that … these type of people don't come into our sector and work with our children." Mr James first came to the attention of authorities in June last year in a report from the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation about material on the dark web. He was employed as a probationary constable from December 2021 to September 2022, when he failed to complete his probation, before continuing with NSW Police in a civilian role until May 2023.
