Pope Leo and Netanyahu speak by phone after Israeli strike on Gaza church - War on Gaza
Pope Leo XIV emphasised the importance of protecting places of worship in a call Friday with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following Israel's deadly strike on Gaza's only Catholic Church, the Vatican said. The pontiff also renewed his appeal for negotiations, a ceasefire and an end to Israel's war on Gaza, while reiterating his concern for the "dramatic humanitarian situation" in the Palestinian territory, it said in a statement. The Vatican said Netanyahu initiated the call on Friday morning, the day after a deadly Israeli strike on the Holy Family Church in Gaza City killed three people and provoked international condemnation. "During the conversation, the Holy Father renewed his appeal to revive negotiations and reach a ceasefire and the end of the war," the Vatican said in a statement, noting that Leo was at his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome. "He once again expressed his concern for the dramatic humanitarian situation of the population in Gaza, whose heartbreaking toll is borne particularly by children, the elderly and the sick." "Finally, the Holy Father reiterated the urgency of protecting places of worship and especially the faithful and all people in Palestine and Israel." Netanyahu has said Israel "deeply regrets" the strike, and blamed a "stray round". However, figures released by Gaza's Government Media Office in April reveal that Israeli airstrikes have destroyed over 1,000 mosques and three churches, indicating a clear pattern of attacks on places of worship, according to many observers. He repeated this regret in the conversation with the pope, which was "friendly", a spokesman for Netanyahu told AFP, adding that the two men agreed to meet soon. Israel's military maintains that it does not deliberately target churches or religious sites, despite ongoing airstrikes on Gaza that have targeted hospitals, places of worship, and civilian infrastructure, killing more than 58,000 people since October 7, 2023. *This story was edited by Ahram Online. Iranian Official Claims US Preparing for War Under Cover of Diplomacy
By Ahmad El-Assasy An unnamed senior Iranian official has claimed that Tehran possesses intelligence suggesting the United States is preparing for a military confrontation with Iran, using diplomatic talks as a façade for its strategic buildup. In statements published Thursday by Iran's state-run Press TV, the official warned that Iran should prioritize readiness for conflict rather than engaging in what he described as deceptive negotiations. 'Our intelligence indicates that Washington is pursuing dialogue not for peace, but to prepare for war,' the official said. 'If this is the case, we see no reason to waste time and prefer to focus on preparing for conflict.' Iran Demands Guarantees Ahead of Any Future Talks The official went on to accuse the U.S. of seeking to disarm Iran as a means to compensate for what he called 'Israel's weakness in the upcoming war.' He emphasized that any new round of talks must include strong and verifiable guarantees to ensure negotiations are not used as a cover for a security deception. 'Future negotiations must seriously address core issues — including Israel's nuclear arsenal and reparations for the last war,' he said. U.S. Envoy Under Scrutiny The Iranian official also singled out U.S. envoy Steve Weitekamp (rendered as Steve Weitkoff in Press TV), saying Iran needs assurance that he will act as a genuine mediator rather than an instigator of conflict. 'Providing such guarantees is extremely difficult, but we are willing to give the U.S. another chance — to hear what they have to say and observe their actions,' the official added. These remarks reflect Iran's growing skepticism about American diplomatic overtures amid heightened regional tensions and come at a time when indirect talks between Tehran and Washington remain stalled. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language

Germany Warns Sanctions on Iran Could Return if No Nuclear Deal by Summer
By Ahmad El-Assasy Germany has signaled that the European Troika — comprised of Germany, France, and the United Kingdom — may reinstate United Nations sanctions on Iran if no agreement is reached on the country's nuclear program by the end of summer. Speaking to Reuters on Wednesday, a German Foreign Ministry spokesperson stressed the urgency of finding a verifiable and lasting diplomatic solution that reflects the international community's security interests. 'If such a solution is not reached this summer, the option of triggering the snapback mechanism to reimpose sanctions remains on the table,' the spokesperson warned. Snapback Sanctions Mechanism Looms The snapback mechanism would automatically reinstate all U.N. sanctions previously lifted under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the landmark nuclear deal between Iran and world powers. The warning from Germany comes amid stalled negotiations and growing concerns over Iran's expanding nuclear activities. European officials have expressed frustration over the lack of progress and are increasingly considering punitive measures as a last resort. This latest statement marks a firm stance from the European Troika, underscoring their readiness to take diplomatic and economic action if Iran fails to return to compliance. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language
