Dodgers eager to generate more contact vs. Rays

Reuters2 days ago
August 3 - The Los Angeles Dodgers received a boost with the return of starting pitcher Blake Snell on Saturday, but the team is still looking for answers for its struggles at the plate.
Los Angeles will continue that search when the Dodgers face the host Tampa Bay Rays in the rubber match of a three-game series on Sunday.
The Dodgers were held to six singles and shut out for the sixth time this season in a 4-0 loss on Saturday. Snell pitched five strong innings, but the Dodgers struck out 11 times and weren't able to put a runner on second base until the sixth inning.
"We've got to find a way to put the ball in play, force something to happen," Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts said. "If you look at the strikeout rate, the last few weeks, it's certainly up there. We've got to find a way to reset. Just overall take better at-bats and have a two-strike approach."
Tampa Bay snapped its four-game losing streak behind first baseman Yandy Diaz, who had two homers among his three hits and three RBIs. Diaz recorded his 900th career hit in the win.
"It's something big," Diaz said through a translator. "After all the sacrifice and the work that I have put in, I'm glad that things are going well for me now."
The Rays are adjusting without All-Star first baseman Jonathan Aranda, who will miss at least the next three weeks. Aranda landed on the 10-day injured list with a left wrist fracture suffered during Thursday's game against the New York Yankees.
Tampa Bay has also played the last two games without center fielder Chandler Simpson, who is listed as day-to-day with a left index finger sprain. Despite the injuries, Rays right fielder Josh Lowe said the team needs to remain focused.
"Show up to work, tie your cleats, put your jersey on, get out there and get after it," Lowe said. "You know, the game doesn't feel bad for you. Nobody feels bad for you. You've got to go out there and compete and rely on our teammates to get each other going and give it our best every single day."
Sunday's series finale features a pair of right-handers as the Dodgers' Yoshinobu Yamamoto (9-7, 2.63 ERA) faces Tampa Bay's Joe Boyle (1-1, 2.82).
Yamamoto, 26, allowed one run over seven innings in a 5-2 road win over the Cincinnati Reds last Monday.
Yamamoto has been impressive over his past six starts, allowing a total of eight earned runs with 38 strikeouts across 31 2/3 innings.
"When he needs to make a pitch, the split's been there. Using the curveball to get back into counts and the strikeout when he needs it," Roberts said. "It's good to see him get back when he was kind of middling for a bit there and get back to being the dominant pitcher that we know he can be."
Yamamoto is set to make his first career appearance against Tampa Bay, which is hoping Boyle can bounce back from a rough outing last Tuesday.
The 25-year-old gave up six runs (four earned) over 3 1/3 innings in a 7-5 road loss to the New York Yankees. He is making his first career appearance against Los Angeles.

Shannon Sharpe hints at money trouble in the wake of ESPN firing after $50m rape lawsuit settlement

Shannon Sharpe hinted at financial struggles as he urged close friend and podcast co-host Chad Johnson to settle his debts with the NFL Hall of Famer. Sharpe, 57, was axed by ESPN last week, shortly after he settled a bombshell sexual lawsuit with an ex-girlfriend, who had accused him of rape. In settling the lawsuit, Sharpe's accuser retracted her rape accusation against him. And now, the former tight end has hinted that money is a bit tight as he pressed Johnson to pay him back. The duo were discussing the Dallas Cowboys ' contract extension drama with Micah Parsons on their 'Nightcap' podcast when Sharpe claimed that the former wide receiver owed him $5,900 from an alleged loan he gave out almost a year ago. 'Like you do owe me 5,900? You basically told me I'll pay you when I get ready,' Sharpe interjected as they discussed Cowboys owner Jerry Jones's handling of the negotiations - or reported lack of - with Parsons' camp. 'Imma take care of you baby. I'm not Jerry. I don't like that comparison. Don't do me like that,' Johnson hit back. '[My] pocket's light right now, Ocho... Just saying, pocket's light,' Sharpe said, sending the pair into a fit of laughter. 'See that's why I love you,' Johnson said. 'That's what I need... That's the Shannon I need. We are going to be alright. We're going to be alright. I'm telling you. We're good.' Sharpe's quip about his financial situation came just two days after he and Johnson were slapped with yet another lawsuit. The co-hosts have been sued for $20m by Jimalita Tillman - a woman from Chicago who went viral after a flirty moment with Usher at one of his concerts in April. Tillman - who is said to be suing Sharpe, his 'Nightcap' podcast co-host Chad Johnson and its production company, Shay Shay Media - alleges the hosts knowingly peddled a false narrative about her marital status. Her steamy interaction with Usher caused a stir on social media at the time, with fans picking up on the intensity between them at the concert. Though despite her claims that she is not married, Sharpe and Johnson joked that Tillman's 'husband' was divorcing on the back of the viral clip. 'The defendants' false narratives were shared widely across their platforms, reaching millions of followers, viral spread and refutation efforts, despite my clear and public reputation of the false narrative,' Tillman's filing read. Tillman, a single mother and global director for the Harold Washington Cultural Center, claims she went on national media shows to refute the allegations made by Sharpe and Johnson. 'The defendants continued to post the defamatory content across their social media platforms,' she added. 'I made numerous efforts to contact the defendants to request the removal of this false narrative, but these requests were disregarded.' Tillman said the false statements have caused 'significant harm to my character and reputation.' She is reportedly seeking $20m in damages. has reached out to Sharpe's legal team for comment. Sharpe was previously sued for defamation by Brett Favre over comments he made about the Green Bay Packers legend's connection to a welfare misspending case during an episode of Fox Sports' Undisputed in 2022. Favre characterized the comments as 'egregiously false.' However, a judge dismissed the case against him in 2022 after ruling that they were protected under the US Constitution. Sharpe has been embroiled in controversy this year after a woman, identified as one of his ex-girlfriends, accused him of raping her on two occasions over the course of their relationship in a bombshell lawsuit. The First Take star, who denied the allegations, stepped away from his part-time duties with ESPN and vowed to return later in the year once he had proved his innocence. The former ESPN star claimed Tillman's husband was leaving her after the steamy moment at Usher's concert, which went viral online. She alleges that she was not married at the time Yet just weeks after the accuser reached a settlement and retracted the allegations, it was revealed last Wednesday that he has been fired by ESPN after almost two years. Johnson had appeared on ESPN's 'First Take' just hours before it was reported that the network had parted ways with the NFL Hall of Famer, who made regular guest appearances on the show. And the former wide receiver seized the chance to pitch himself to Stephen A. Smith, Molly Qerim and the crew as he appeared to angle for a permanent position in the studio. Sharpe addressed his shock departure later in the evening, saying at the start of his 'Nightcap' podcast : 'Obviously, I'm sure everybody's heard the news by now that I will not be returning to ESPN. 'I found out this information a little earlier in the week, and really the only thing that I really asked is, "Guys, could we wait until Monday? My brother's going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, I really want it to be about him and I want it to be about my family." 'I said, "This coming out will overshadow everything he's worked his entire life for." And unfortunately it didn't happen that way.' Sharpe's younger brother, Sterling, was officially inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame at an enshrinement ceremony in Canton, Ohio at the weekend, 14 years after his older sibling received the same honor. Sterling, 60, spent all seven years of his NFL career with the Green Bay Packers, where he became a five-time Pro Bowl and three-time All-Pro wide receiver while leading the league in receptions in three separate seasons. Shannon is a three-time Super Bowl champion who enjoyed two successful stints with the Denver Broncos and a brief spell with the Baltimore Ravens in his 13-year career. After stressing that he 'really enjoyed' his time with ESPN and that he was 'very, very grateful for the opportunity', Sharpe stressed that he was disappointed to upstage his brother with the news of his axing. 'They did what they felt they needed to do, and I'm at peace with that,' he added about his now-former employers. 'But I just wish this thing could have waited until Monday, because I hate the fact that I've overshadowed my brother. 'The first two brothers in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and this is what the headline's gonna be for the next few days.'

Yankees sign RHP Kenta Maeda to minor league deal

August 5 - The New York Yankees signed free agent right-handed pitcher Kenta Maeda and assigned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday. Maeda, 37, was released by the Detroit Tigers after a rough opening month to the season, in which he threw eight innings of relief over seven appearances and had a 7.88 ERA with six walks, three hit batters and eight strikeouts. Maeda has played parts of nine major league seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2016-19), Minnesota Twins (2020-21, 2023) and Tigers (2024-25). Primarily a starter until joining Detroit, Maeda has a career record of 68-56, a 4.20 ERA and 1,055 strikeouts over 226 games (172 starts). Maeda was runner-up for the 2020 American League Cy Young award after he went 6-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 11 starts in the pandemic-shortened season. The Yankees acquired three relief pitchers at last week's trade deadline but did not deal for a starting pitcher. They released veteran Marcus Stroman to make room for 2024 American League Rookie of the Year Luis Gil, who came off the injured list and made his season debut this weekend. --Field Level Media

Marlins OF Derek Hill (finger) reinstated from IL

August 5 - The Miami Marlins reinstated outfielder Derek Hill from the 10-day injured list on Monday while also designating infielder Jack Winkler for assignment. Hill injured the middle finger on his left hand during batting practice last month, leading him to miss the past two weeks with a finger sprain. He returned to the team on Monday after a short rehab appearance with Triple-A Jacksonville. In 33 games with Miami this season, Hill has batted .211 with two home runs and seven RBIs. A six-year pro, Hill has hit .229 with 13 home runs and 50 RBIs split among stints with five different teams. Winkler appeared in 11 games for the Marlins this year, logging two hits in 12 at-bats. In another move, Miami claimed outfielder Joey Wiemer off waivers from the Kansas City Royals and optioned him to Triple-A Jacksonville. Wiemer, who was designated for assignment by Kansas City last week, is hitting .182 with nine homers and 38 RBIs with Triple-A Omaha this year. --Field Level Media
