Gymnastics: Belgian ex-Olympic champion Derwael retires - Omni sports

Al-Ahram Weekly8 hours ago
Belgium's former Olympic uneven bars champion Nina Derwael said Tuesday she was retiring from gymnastics at the age of 25, having "achieved her goals" in the sport.
Derwael became the first Belgian women's gymnast to win an Olympic medal four years ago in Tokyo, taking gold after twice being crowned world champion in the uneven bars.
"If I still wanted to play a significant role at world championships or Olympics, I would have to put my body under even greater and more prolonged pressure, a risk I no longer want to take," she said in a statement from her agency.
Derwael is a three-time European champion in the uneven bars and also won gold on the balance beam in Leipzig this year.
She finished fourth at the Paris Olympics in her favourite event after recovering from a serious shoulder injury.

FIFA announces details to apply for World Cup tickets - World

The next edition of the tournament, which will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States, kicks off at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on June 11. Soccer's world governing body FIFA said that due to anticipated high demand tickets would be released in phases. It did not say if it would use dynamic pricing, as was the case for the Club World Cup, which saw ticket prices fluctuate wildly. 'We're looking forward to welcoming the world back to North America, as Canada, Mexico and the United States host what will be the biggest and greatest sporting event ever," FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a statement. 'We encourage fans everywhere to get ready to secure their place — these will be the most coveted seats in world sport.' Zamalek sign Pharco FC forward Ahmed Sherif

Zamalek have officially secured the signature of forward Ahmed Sherif from Pharco FC on a five‑year contract, the Cairo giants announced on Tuesday. The 22-year-old becomes Zamalek's fourth signing of the summer transfer window, following the arrivals of his teammate Amr Nasser on Monday, and goalkeeper El-Mahdi Soliman and Angolan winger Chico Banza on Sunday. Sherif scored 13 goals in 109 games across all competitions for Pharco FC since joining the club from second-tier side Wadi Degla in 2021. The White Knights are revamping their squad as they look to bounce back from a disappointing campaign that saw them finish third in the league and exit the CAF Confederation Cup in the quarter-finals, failing to defend their title. The club began their rebuild last month with the appointment of Belgian coach Yannick Ferrera as their new manager, replacing interim manager Ayman El-Ramady, who had guided the team in the Egypt Cup. The new Egyptian Premier League season is scheduled to kick off in 8 August. Swimming: World Championships open water events postponed again because of poor water quality - Omni sports

Open water swimming at the World Championships in Singapore has been postponed again because of 'water quality levels exceeding acceptable thresholds,' the governing body World Aquatics said in a statement Tuesday. World Aquatics and organizers said that while water quality results have improved, the women's and men's 10-kilometer events scheduled for Wednesday morning have now been pushed back to the afternoon. The women's 10-kilometer event, which was to have opened the program Tuesday, had already been postponed to Wednesday to be held the same day as the men's 10-kilometer event. World Aquatics said both events will only take place if 'acceptable test results' are returned Wednesday morning from samples collected on Tuesday afternoon. Other open water events are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Open water swimming was an issue in last year's Olympics in Paris with concerns about water quality in the Seine River. It was also an issue at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Water polo competition at the worlds is underway at an indoor venue. The main even of the championships is eight days of swimming competition in the pool, which opens on July 27.
