Andhra Pradesh CM Naidu invites Singapore entrepreneurs to invest in state
Addressing investors at the 'Andhra Pradesh – Singapore Business Forum and Partnership Summit Roadshow" on Monday, he highlighted a wide range of opportunities in the ongoing development of infrastructure such as ports and airports, and the creation of Quantum Valley in Amravati.
Naidu said Andhra Pradesh would contribute 160 GW of green energy to India's target of 500 GW of green and clean energy by 2030. Addressing over 500 investors on the second day of his visit to the city state, the chief minister said an Arcelor Mittal steel plant and a Google operation bentre are to be set up in Visakhapatnam.
He categorically listed out the development of industrial corridors that are being led by Indian conglomerates, including Tata Group's Ratan Tata Innovation Hub.
'I am requesting Singapore entrepreneurs to participate in the development. We need more investments, and we need more and more entrepreneurs. We need your support for the development, and India is the best and a safe place for investment," remarked Naidu.
At the event, he spoke widely about deep tech, electronics, semiconductors, green hydrogen, logistics, ports, airports, inland waterways, pharma, biotechnology and tourism.
Omar Shazad, Group CEO of Singapore-based engineering company Meinhardt, which has over 100 projects in India, said, 'The chief minister's presentation at the roadshow was incredibly inspiring." 'There are a lot of opportunities for Singapore businesses to participate both in the infrastructure space and also the adjacent real estate development, industrial, as well as data centre," Omar told PTI.
He noted that Naidu has clearly spelt out the different priorities and aspects that are going to come through in Amaravati, the futuristic city in Andhra Pradesh that the chief minister is ambitiously working on and is designed to mirror Singapore's urban and industrial development programmes. Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann condoles demise of Satyapal Malik
Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday condoled the demise of former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satyapal Malik. Malik died on Tuesday at a hospital in Delhi after a prolonged illness, his personal staff said. He was 79. In his condolence message, Mann said he was sad to hear the news of the demise of Satyapal Malik. "He always gave priority to the issues of farmers and the general public and fearlessly raised the voice of truth," Mann said in a social media post in Punjabi. Senior Congress leader and leader of opposition in the Punjab Assembly Partap Singh Bajwa too expressed grief over Malik's death. "Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Satyapal Malik Ji, former Governor and a seasoned public servant. His contributions to Indian politics and governance will always be remembered. Heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones," Bajwa in a post on X. Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring also expressed grief over the death. "The news of the demise of former Governor Chaudhary Satyapal Singh Malik ji is extremely saddening. He was a leader who fearlessly expressed his views and held clear opinions in the interest of the nation. His contributions will always be remembered, said Warring. Akal Takht officiating Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj too expressed deep sorrow over the demise of the former J-K governor. Gargaj said that Malik fearlessly raised his voice for Punjab and especially for the Sikh community'a contribution that will never be forgotten. In a statement, Gargaj noted that during the farmers' agitation on the borders of Delhi, Malik had strongly spoken in favour of the farmers' rights and held the government accountable. Malik, who had also held the positions of governor of Goa, Bihar, Meghalaya, and Odisha, besides being a member of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in his long political career, died at 1.12 pm at the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital here. He was in the ICU of the hospital for a long time, getting treatment for various ailments, the staff said. In his gubernatorial role at Jammu and Kashmir, Malik oversaw the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories on August 5, 2019.

SC refers plea seeking lifetime ban on convicted MPs/MLAs to CJI
New Delhi, Aug 5 (UNI) The Supreme Court today took note of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking permanent disqualification of Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) upon conviction in criminal cases, and directed that the matter be placed before the Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai for listing before an appropriate larger Bench. The PIL, filed by Advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, challenges the constitutional validity of provisions under Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which currently bar convicted legislators from contesting elections only for six years after completing their sentence. Senior Advocate Vijay Hansaria mentioned the matter before a Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, urging for an early hearing. 'This is a matter of grave concern. Orders have been passed from time to time. The February 10 order requires that it be listed before a three-judge bench,' Hansaria submitted. The Bench acknowledged the urgency and referred to paragraphs 4 and 5 of the February 10, 2025 order passed by a Bench led by Justice Dipankar Datta, directing that the matter be placed before the CJI for further directions. The plea is now expected to be heard finally on October 20, subject to the CJI's listing. In February 2025, the Union government opposed the plea, arguing that a lifetime disqualification of elected representatives was a matter purely within the domain of Parliament and not for the judiciary to decide. The Centre, through the Legislative Department, maintained that while the court may declare a provision unconstitutional under its power of judicial review, it cannot rewrite legislation to substitute "lifetime" for "six years" as suggested by the petitioner. 'The relief sought effectively asks the Court to read 'lifetime' instead of 'six years' in all sub-sections of Section 8. This is unknown to judicial review and constitutional law,' the Centre submitted. The government emphasized that Parliament has the discretion to decide what duration of disqualification is appropriate, keeping in view principles of proportionality and reasonableness. 'It is one thing to say that Parliament has the power to impose a lifetime ban, and another to say that it must necessarily exercise that power in all cases,' it said. The Centre further argued that the PIL failed to distinguish between the basis for disqualification (i.e., conviction) and the effect of disqualification (i.e., its duration). It noted that Indian penal statutes often impose time-bound restrictions on rights and freedoms post-conviction, and that extending these indefinitely would be unduly harsh and disproportionate. 'At the end of the prescribed time, penalties cease to operate automatically. Deterrence is ensured, while undue harshness is avoided,' the government stated. It also reiterated that any direction to Parliament on how to draft or amend laws would be beyond the constitutional powers of the judiciary. The PIL raises a larger question regarding the criminalisation of politics, an issue repeatedly flagged by the Supreme Court in the past. The Court has, over the years, issued directions for the expeditious trial of criminal cases against lawmakers and for greater transparency in candidate disclosures. As the matter now heads to a larger Bench, the decision could have far-reaching implications for electoral reforms, legislative accountability, and the scope of judicial intervention in matters of legislative policy.
