Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler calls golf an 'unsatisfying venture' entering British Open

UPI15-07-2025
July 15 (UPI) -- World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler was a fountain of introspection Tuesday at his news conference entering the 2025 British Open, calling golf "an unsatisfying venture" and admitting that he often wrestles with motivation.
The three-time major champion is once again the favorite for the tournament, which will be held from Thursday through Sunday at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland.
"When I sit back at the end of the year and try to reflect on things, having that sense of accomplishment from winning the Masters Tournament and winning the PGA Championship, I have a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation for it," Scheffler said. "But it's just hard to explain how it just doesn't satisfy.
"It's an unsatisfying venture. This is not the place to look for satisfaction."
Scheffler earned three wins through 15 events this season. He placed inside the Top 25 in all of those appearances, including 12 Top-10 performances. Scheffler also cashed in $16.1 million in 2025. He won seven events and earned 16 Top-10 finishes out of 19 events last season, when he earned nearly $30 million.
For his career, Scheffler won 16 PGA Tour events and totaled $87.8 million in prize money. He finished inside the Top 10 in nearly half (71) of his 145 career PGA Tour appearances.
"It feels like you work your whole life to celebrate winning a tournament for like a few minutes," said Scheffler, a Dallas resident. "It only lasts a few minutes, that kind of euphoric feeling. To win the Byron Nelson Championship [in McKinney, Texas] at home, I literally worked my entire life to become good at golf to have an opportunity to win that tournament.
"You win it, you celebrate, get to hug my family, my sister's there, it's such an amazing moment. Then it's like, OK, what are we going to eat for dinner? Life goes on."
Scheffler said that he loves putting in work, playing professional golf and living out his dreams, but prioritizes being a father. Scheffler and his wife, Meredith, welcomed their first child, son Bennett, on May, 8 2024.
"To get to live out your dreams is very special, but at the end of the day, I'm not out here to inspire the next generation of golfers," Scheffler said. "I'm not out here to inspire someone to be the best player in the world, because what's the point?
"This is not a fulfilling life. It's fulfilling from the sense of accomplishment, but it's not fulfilling from a sense of the deepest places of your heart. There's a lot of people that make it to what they thought was going to fulfill them in life, and you get there, you get to No. 1 in the world, and they're like what's the point?
"I really do believe that. ... Why do I want to win this tournament so bad? That's something that I wrestle with on a daily basis."
Scheffler emphasized that expectations for his next tournament chase away the fleeting feeling of victory. He also said that he would quit the sport if it impacted his relationship with his family.
"That's why I talk about family being my priority because it really is," Scheffler said. "I'm blessed to be able to come out here and play golf, but if my golf ever started affecting my home life or it ever affected the relationship I have with my wife or my son, that's going to be the last day that I play out here for a living.
"This is not the be all, end all. This is not the most important thing in my life. That's why I wrestle with, why is this so important to me? Because I'd much rather be a great father than I would be a great golfer. At the end of the day, that's what's more important to me."
The 2025 British Open will air on NBC, USA Network, Golf Channel, Peacock, NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app.

Padraig Harrington leads Justin Leonard by 2 shots at Senior British Open

Associated Press BERKSHIRE, England (AP) — Padraig Harrington birdied the final hole Saturday for another 5-under 65 for a two-shot lead over Justin Leonard going into the final round of the Senior British Open as the Irishman goes for his second senior major of the year. Harrington was among four players who had at least a share of the lead at some point during the round on the Old Course at Sunningdale. He seized the lead with birdies on the 13th and 14th hole, and a closing birdie added to his slight lead. Harrington was at 13-under 197. He has been in the United Kingdom the last three weeks for links golf, starting with the Scottish Open. He won the U.S. Senior Open in Colorado a month ago. Leonard, the only PGA Tour Champions player to make the cut last week in the British Open at Royal Portrush, also had a second straight 65. Thomas Bjorn had a 67 and was three shots behind. Harrington and Leonard are past British Open champions — Leonard at Royal Troon in 1997, Harrington winning the first of two claret jugs a decade later at Carnoustie (2007) and Royal Birkdale (2008). Either one can become the fifth player to win the British Open and Senior British Open, a feat last accomplished by Darren Clarke in 2022. Steven Alker, a two-time Charles Schwab Cup winner who opened with a 73, tried to get back in the game. He shot 66 and was among four players at 8-under 202, five shots behind. The winner is exempt for the 154th British Open next year at Royal Birkdale. ___ AP golf:

With his brother on the bag, Kurt Kitayama fires career-low 60 Saturday at the 3M Open

Every so often on the PGA Tour there are moments that remind us why Saturday has long been referred to as "Moving Day." Kurt Kitayama started the third round at the 2025 3M Open eight shots behind the 36-hole leader, Thorbjorn Olesen. He finished just before 1:30 p.m. ET with the outright lead, three strokes clear of the field. After posting a 28 on the outward nine, he spent the entire back nine on 59 watch, but a bogey at the par-3 17th all but dashed Kitayama's hopes of joining that prestigious club. He walked to the tee at the par-5 18th needing eagle, and after his tee ball found the right rough, he decided to lay up and give himself a good chance for birdie. "[My ball] was just like a foot in the rough and the lie was — I needed to be a foot in the first cut and I would have gone for it. It was just very questionable, 220 out, I didn't really know if it would jump out of there or maybe just dive. Had a good round going so that would have really stunk if it goes in the water there." Still, he nearly salvaged the 59 with this shot into the green: The 32-year-old California native ultimately signed for an 11-under 60 and entered the clubhouse at 17 under for the tournament after narrowly sneaking inside the 5-under cutline Friday. "Yesterday's round felt like I didn't have any control," Kitayama said. "I hit some balls after, talked to my coach, Chris Como, and kind of worked through some things on the range. Felt like I found something that I could go with. And warming up today, felt pretty good and it kind of showed on the course. Yeah, was happy I was able to find that." He might have felt comfortable warming up, but he certainly didn't think he'd be flirting with 59. "I don't think you really have a number [in mind] going out into any round, just kind of take what you can get. You know, as it comes down the stretch, then the number kind of pops in your mind." The number ended up being 60, which shatters his previous career low of 62, and according to the man himself, it's the best round he's ever played. "Well, it's not only my Tour career best, it's like my personal best. Yeah, it means a lot, especially to have my brother on the bag. It's a really cool experience having that opportunity coming down the stretch. And yeah, it's good to have that momentum going into the final round." Kitayama will now enter Sunday in prime position to capture his second career PGA Tour victory — his first of which came at the 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational. It's been somewhat of a slog for Kitayama in 2025. He has just four top 25 finishes in 18 starts and entered this week 110th in the race for the FedEx Cup. Another solid round Sunday and he could be walking away in much better standing, which is vital given that next week's Wyndham Championship is the final regular season event on the PGA Tour's 2025 calendar. The FedEx Cup playoffs begin the following week at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis. Keep up with all the action from Saturday's third round at the 2025 3M Open with our live updates page.
