Manipur: Indefinite restriction imposed in 2 Kamjong villages after arson attack
According to an order issued by district magistrate Rangnamei Rang Peter, the superintendent of police reported that the villages of Gampal and Haiyang (a hamlet of Gampal), under Sahamphung sub-division, Kamjong district, were set ablaze around 9 am by unknown miscreants.
The incident, the order noted, poses a significant risk to law and order and may disrupt peace and public tranquility in the area.
Citing sub-section 1 of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, the district magistrate has imposed a prohibition on movement for residents of the affected villages. The restrictions came into effect at 2 pm on Wednesday and will remain in place until further notice.
Police said that 'the incident occurred approximately 80 kilometers east of Chassad police station, near the Indo-Myanmar border, and whether there are casualties during the incident is yet to be confirmed.'
Kamjong is a Naga-dominated district that shares its eastern boundary with Myanmar.
Attempts to contact district police for further details were unsuccessful.

In a fresh development in the Meghalaya honeymoon murder case, a news anchor and Raja Raghuwanshi's cousin have been summoned over allegedly defamatory remarks made about the Kamakhya temple. According to the Guwahati City Police, the Investigating Officer (IO) sent 35 (3) BNSS notice to the anchor, the news channel and Shrishti Raghuwanshi to appear before Investigation Officer at Crime Branch police station on June 23 and 24, but they did not appear before Investing Officer till date. In a statement, Joint Police Commissioner of Guwahati City Police Ankur Jain said, 'In this regard, a case has been registered at the Crime Branch police station vide Crime Branch Police Station Case no 04/2025 U/S 196(2)/299/302 of BNSS, 2023. The IO has sent 35 (3) BNSS notice to the accused named in the FIR including the anchor of the news channel and Shrishti Raghuwanshi of Indore on 13-06-2025 to appear before the Investigation Officer at Crime Branch PS on 23 and 24 June, but they did not appear before IO till date.' The Guwahati Police has said that during an interview on a news channel, the news anchor made highly 'derogatory' remarks against Maa Kamakhya Temple. Raja Raghuwanshi's cousin, Shrishti, further agreed with the anchor's remarks, police said. "The statements are against the revered temple of Hindu deity Maa Kamakhya of Assam, thereby hurting the religious sentiments of a particular community and disturbing public peace and communal harmony in the society. Hence, the case registered," the senior police official said.

The police further alleged that Shrasti Raghuwanshi, who was interviewed during the segment, supported the anchor's claims, thereby reinforcing what authorities describe as a false narrative. 'The statements are against the revered temple of Hindu deity Maa Kamakhya of Assam, thereby hurting the religious sentiments of a particular community and disturbing public peace and communal harmony in the society. Hence, the case registered,' said Ankur Jain, joint police commissioner, Guwahati City Police. Shrasti's brother, Vipin Raghuwanshi, responded to the summons saying that the family had tried to comply with police instructions. 'They asked to apologise, so we apologised. The police asked Srashti to provide them with all the evidence she had and apologise... The notice came 15 days ago from the Assam police,' he said. He further suggested that rising public interest in Shrasti's social media activity may have led to police believing that she is trying to divert attention. 'Due to the reel on Instagram, Shrasti's followers are increasing, which has led the police to suspect that she is diverting the investigation in another direction,' Vipin told ANI. According to a statement from the Guwahati City Police, a notice under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, was served to the anchor, their news channel, and Shrasti on June 13, instructing them to appear for questioning on 23 and 24 June. However, the police said none of them have responded to the summons so far. 'In this regard, a case has been registered at the Crime Branch police station vide Crime Branch Police Station Case no 04/2025 U/S 196(2)/299/302 of BNSS, 2023. After an intense 10-day search, Raja's body was discovered on June 2 in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls in East Khasi Hills, with injuries suggesting foul play. A major breakthrough came when Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raja's wife, surrendered at a police station in Uttar Pradesh. She was soon arrested along with three other accused. The police allege that the murder was premeditated and carried out with the help of accomplices. As the case captured national headlines, Shrasti's Instagram reels, featuring both grieving family moments and confrontational messages aimed at Sonam, went viral. With over 3,94,000 followers, her account became a focal point of public curiosity and criticism alike. Some videos showed her emotional outbursts, while others appeared promotional in nature, sparking accusations of 'clout-chasing" during a tragedy. A particularly controversial video was uploaded a day before Raja's body was discovered, in which she promoted a mobile store in Indore. The timing of the post drew sharp condemnation online, with users questioning the sincerity behind her activism. Several viewers also objected to her use of insensitive hashtags like #like and #viral amid the family's mourning. Assam Police have since summoned Shrasti for questioning, formally serving her a notice. In response, the Raghuvanshi family has issued a statement clarifying that their intentions were never to hurt religious sentiments. They expressed willingness to apologise and said their posts were driven by grief and a desire for justice. This case shows how the line between emotional expression and legal responsibility can blur quickly on social media, a senior police officer said.
