India becoming self-reliant in defence capabilities: Ex-DRDO chief

Jamshedpur (Jharkhand), Jul 2 (PTI) NITI Aayog member and former DRDO chief V K Saraswat on Wednesday said India has been becoming self-reliant in its defence capabilities in the last 11 years of the Modi government.
Barring a few equipment such as S-400 air defence system, a majority of the weapons and missiles — such as Akash and Brahmos — used during Operation Sindoor were manufactured in the country, he said.
'Today, the country is dependent on arms imports only for immediate requirements of the armed forces or where we do not have the technology,' he said.
He said the country's self-reliance in defence capabilities has grown substantially in the last 11 years as the Centre promotes private sector participation.
Saraswat said he was impressed with the work done in various fields by CSIR-NML scientists.
The government has made provision of Rs 1 lakh crore to promote research and development in the private sector, he added. PTI BS ACD

Maruti Suzuki And Hyundai Domestic Sales Dropped, But Exports Up in Apr-June 2025
According to company data, total domestic passenger vehicle sales fell to 1,18,906 units in June 2025 compared to 1,37,160 units in the same month last year. This marks a drop of 13.3 per cent year-on-year for June. The decline in sales was also visible in the first quarter of FY2025-26. From April to June 2025, Maruti Suzuki sold 3,93,572 passenger vehicles in the domestic market, compared to 4,19,114 units sold in the same period of FY2024-25. This represents about a 6.1 per cent decline in sales during the quarter. The sharpest fall was seen in the Mini and Compact car segments. Mini cars like Alto and S-Presso saw sales drop to 6,414 units in June 2025, down from 9,395 units a year ago. Compact cars such as Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, and WagonR also saw a decline in sales to 54,177 units, down from 64,049 units in June 2024. Together, the Mini and Compact segments fell from 73,444 units to 60,591 units, indicating a weak demand in small car categories. Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) sales also saw a marginal drop, while export sales increased to 37,842 units in June 2025, up from 31,033 units a year ago. Overall, Maruti Suzuki's total domestic sales (including PV and LCV) stood at 1,21,339 units in June 2025, compared to 1,39,918 units in June 2024, showing a broader decline in local demand. Despite the dip in domestic sales, export performance showed growth, which helped the company limit the impact on total sales. The company exported 96,972 vehicles in April-June 2025 versus 70,560 vehicles in the same period in the previous year, a 22 per cent increase. On the other hand, Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) sold 60,924 units in June 2025, out of which 44,024 units were sold in India and 16,900 units were exported. In the first quarter of the financial year 2026 (April to June), Hyundai sold 1,80,399 units in total. This included 1,32,259 units in domestic sales and 48,140 units in exports. Hyundai also achieved a 13 per cent year-on-year growth in exports during Q1 of FY2026, increasing from 42,600 units last year to 48,140 units this year. Exports made up 26.7 per cent of Hyundai's total sales, showing the company's growing focus on international markets. SUVs played a big role in Hyundai's domestic sales, contributing 67.6 per cent of total sales in India during June 2025. Tarun Garg, Whole-time Director and Chief Operating Officer, HMIL said, 'In the domestic market, the geopolitical situation continued to affect the market sentiment with domestic sales registering 44,024 units in June 2025." Odisha: Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurates, lays foundation stones of Rs 480 cr projects
Koraput (Odisha) [India], July 6 (ANI): Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for projects worth Rs 480 crore aimed at boosting the infrastructural development of the Central University of Odisha (CUO) in Koraput district. The ceremony was also graced by Odisha Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond, and Koraput MP Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka and Vice Chancellors of the various Universities. At the event, six Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were exchanged between leading educational institutions. PM Modi receives grand welcome in Brazil, interacts with Indian diaspora
Rio de Janeiro [Brazil], July 6 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a grand welcome from the Indian community upon his arrival in Rio de Janeiro for a four-day visit to Brazil during which he will participate in the 17th BRICS Summit and undertake a State Visit. The members of the Indian diaspora performed traditional dances and folk songs to welcome the Indian PM in Rio de Janeiro. Most notably, a dance performance based on the theme of Operation Sindoor with 'ye desh nhi mitne dunga' echoing in the venue. A Brazilian music group also performed devotional music, showcasing India's rich cultural and spiritual values. PM Modi has arrived in Brazil on a four-day visit during which he will participate in the 17th BRICS Summit and undertake a State Visit. During the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit (July 6-7), Prime Minister Modi will exchange views on key global issues, including peace and security, strengthening multilateralism, responsible use of artificial intelligence, climate action, global health, and economic and financial matters. According to the official statement, the Prime Minister is also likely to hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the Summit. For the State Visit to Brazil, the Prime Minister will travel to Brasilia where he will hold bilateral discussions with President Lula on the broadening of the Strategic Partnership between the two countries in areas of mutual interest, including trade, defence, energy, space, technology, agriculture, health and people to people linkages. Earlier, Members of the Indian Diaspora, who were waiting to meet PM Modi, expressed their enthusiasm over his visit, calling it a privilege to welcome the PM. 'I am from Gujarat... I have been living in Brazil for a long time. We are very excited and feel privileged and honoured to welcome our Prime Minister today,' Vijay Solanki, a member of the Indian diaspora, said. Pooja, another member of the Indian diaspora, expressed enthusiasm and said, 'I am from Gujarat, and I have been living in Brazil for the last three years. I am very excited to meet him.' PM Modi arrived in Brazil after concluding his visit to Argentina, where he held a bilateral meeting with Argentine President Javier Milei. After Brazil, PM Modi will head to Namibia on July 9 and also address its Modi began his five-nation, eight-day tour (July 2 till July 9) on Wednesday from Ghana.
