Sustainability as a Financial Driver: How Green Practices Boost the Bottom Line

For years, the relationship between sustainability and profitability in supply chain management was viewed as a zero-sum game. Businesses operated under the assumption that environmentally responsible practices were a necessary but costly obligation — a price to pay for regulatory compliance and reputational safeguarding. That narrative is rapidly evolving.
An industry study conducted by DP World and Supply Chain Dive's studioID polled 150 professionals in operations, supply chain, and procurement roles throughout various industries to reveal a decisive shift: 82% of respondents believe companies that prioritize supply chain sustainability experience improved financial performance over time. This data marks a critical inflection point, repositioning sustainability from a burdensome requirement to a strategic lever for financial growth, efficiency, and resilience.

The Strategic Rise of Sustainability
Sustainability is no longer a fringe concern. It has ascended the strategic priority ladder for corporations globally. According to the survey, 71% of respondents indicate their organizations have increased their focus on supply chain sustainability and decarbonization over the past three years, with 25% reporting a significant increase. This upward trajectory is set to continue, with 80% planning to increase their resource allocation towards sustainability initiatives over the next three years.
This evolution is not merely cosmetic. Companies are backing their rhetoric with resources: increased headcount, budgetary expansion, and organizational restructuring. Sarah Mouriño, Senior Director of Sustainability at DP World Americas, notes, 'Sustainability has expanded to encompass diversity and inclusion, data security, and other elements that drive organizational resilience.'
Financial Gains and Competitive Advantage
While consumer demand and regulatory pressures remain drivers, financial and operational benefits are increasingly steering sustainability investments. Efficiency gains and cost reductions ranked as primary motivations, with 36% of respondents citing these factors as key drivers. Additionally, 30% view sustainability as a means to enhance supply chain resilience—a critical attribute in an era punctuated by disruptions. Nearly one-third (32%) see sustainability as a critical competitive advantage, emphasizing the strategic edge it can provide.
Morten Johansen, Chief Operating Officer of DP World Americas, emphasized this point: 'As we observe the transformative shift in supply chain practices, it's evident that sustainability is not just a trend but a foundational element for modern business strategies. This report highlights how integrating sustainability measures can serve as a catalyst for substantial improvements in both economic efficiency and strategic innovation.'
Bronwyn Pountney, Environment Manager for DP World Canada, highlighted the tangible incentives driving this shift. 'The Port of Vancouver's EcoAction Program offers shipping lines up to a 75% discount on harbor dues for utilizing shore power,' she explains. Such programs exemplify the growing synergy between environmental responsibility and cost efficiency.
Value Propositions Driving Adoption
Organizations are increasingly evaluating sustainability through a business-first lens. When assessing the adoption of supply chain sustainability initiatives, the survey identifies compliance with regulatory requirements and risk reduction as top priorities. However, cost savings through efficiency improvements—such as reduced waste, faster processes, and optimized energy consumption—resonate deeply with supply chain managers traditionally measured by cost and performance metrics.
Mouriño underscores this alignment: 'Reducing emissions often results from improving operational efficiency. Once companies recognize these parallel benefits, the business case for sustainability becomes undeniable.'
Climate Concerns and Cost Pressures
Despite this momentum, concerns linger. Cost remains the most significant barrier to scaling sustainability efforts, with 65% of respondents citing it as their primary challenge. Regulatory uncertainty and operational complexity further compound hesitancy. Nonetheless, the trajectory is clear—supply chain leaders are moving forward, driven by a blend of necessity and opportunity.
Scope 3 Emissions: The Next Frontier
Perhaps the most significant development on the horizon is the focus on Scope 3 emissions—indirect emissions from suppliers and partners. While the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently paused mandatory Scope 3 reporting, other jurisdictions like California and the European Union are advancing such requirements. Forward-looking companies are not waiting.

Carbon Accounting as a Business Imperative
As organizations pursue emission reductions, carbon accounting has emerged as a foundational capability. The survey reveals that 35% of respondents are enhancing collaboration between accounting and supply chain departments to improve carbon data accuracy. Investment in emission-tracking systems and the setting of reduction targets are also gaining traction.
Transportation — a major emission source — is under particular scrutiny. Companies are adopting multimodal solutions, shifting from air to sea freight, and exploring alternative fuels. Apple's transition from air to ocean freight, cutting emissions by 95%, is a widely cited benchmark. UPS, similarly, has made strides toward using 40% alternative fuel by 2025.
Partnerships: A Sustainability Multiplier
Collaboration is proving indispensable. Supplier sustainability credentials are now pivotal in partnership evaluations, with 46% of respondents stating that a partner's decarbonization capabilities significantly influence supplier selection.
Pountney points to DP World's initiatives in Vancouver, where low-carbon fuels and electrified port equipment are transforming container operations. 'When partners see us reducing our Scope 1 and 2 emissions, they realize we can help reduce their Scope 3 footprint,' she says. 'It's a win-win.'

As Mouriño aptly concludes, 'The business benefits are becoming more widely acknowledged. This evolution will only accelerate.'

Survey Methodology
DP World collaborated with Supply Chain Dive to conduct an online survey, polling 150 respondents in operations, supply chain, and procurement roles across various industries. The respondents represented a diverse range of sectors, including industrial manufacturing (39%), healthcare/hospitals (20%), consumer products manufacturing (9%), and technology (9%). The largest segment of respondents came from organizations with annual revenues between $101M-$500M (19%), followed by $51M-$100M (16%), and $1.1B-$10B (15%). The survey respondents were based in the United States and Canada.

It's normal for commodity markets to ebb and flow due to a variety of domestic and global factors, but recent tariff impacts and changes in the U.S. economy in 2025 have thrown a new wrench in markets for virgin and recycled aluminum, plastic and fiber commodities. Experts in plastics, paper and metals offered an overview of these factors during the 'Supply Chain Outlook: Trends and Risks to Watch in 2025' event on Wednesday. The Trump administration's tariffs have resulted in market uncertainty, and that's playing out in different ways depending on the commodity, speakers said. These were some key takeaways from the event: Varied trade exposure, but also opportunities for US plastic manufacturing In the plastics industry, tariff exposure varies by sector. For example, plastic resins face less uncertainty compared with the machinery and molds sectors, said Perc Pineda, chief economist at the Plastics Industry Association. 'By and large, the plastics industry's exposure to trade is only about 20%,' he said, noting that there's currently 'a lot' of U.S. plastics production capacity and low utilization. 'If there is a need for import substitution because tariff rates are so high it's cost prohibitive, I am confident that domestic manufacturing could actually step in,' he said. The United States is a net importer of recycled plastics materials, he said. At the same time, domestic virgin resin production has increased by 5% year over year, which he sees as a sign that such production could help backfill demand if recycled commodities become harder to source due to tariffs. In June, virgin resin prices rose by 0.3%, which he sees as a sign that higher tariffs haven't automatically translated to higher inflation. However, the U.S. imports about 70% of the machinery it needs for plastic production, plus around half of needed molds, leading the industry to call for certain tariff exemptions in these sectors, he said. The industry is monitoring the situation, but likely won't see the true effects of such tariffs for several months. 'I know things are evolving, but I am hopeful, because I don't think the economy can continue with a scenario like this, when there's so much uncertainty. It has long-term effects, and the knock-on effects on the economy are going to be broad and wide.' Section 232 tariffs continue to impact steel and aluminum can manufacturing Section 232 aluminum and steel tariffs, which have been in place since 2018, went from 25% to 50% earlier this year. That has increased costs for aluminum and steel cans used for food, beverages and other items. The Can Manufacturers Institute and other groups are calling for specific tariff exemptions on aluminum imported from Canada, as well as on tin plate typically used to make steel cans, said CMI President Scott Breen. The industry prides itself on its recycled content use, Breen said. The average aluminum beverage can is made of about 71% recycled content, 'but that does mean that 29% is virgin or new aluminum, and most of that virgin aluminum is imported,' mainly from Canada, he said. For steel cans, nearly 80% of tin plate is imported, and 'we would love to purchase more domestic tin plate, but it's just not produced at the levels we need,' he said. Since 2018, nine of the 12 tin plate lines available in the U.S. have shut down, he said. Breen said continued tariffs will likely lead to increased food prices, citing a study from the Consumer Brands Association estimating a 9% to to 15% increase in the cost of canned goods. Broader economic trends, not tariffs, driving US fiber trade for now Meanwhile, broader changes in the global economy are making more of an impact on the fiber industry than tariffs specifically are, said Terry Webber, vice president of industry affairs for the American Forest & Paper Association. Paper is 'a commodity that tracks pretty closely to general economic performances. There's more economic activity, there's more paper and paper-based packaging consumed,' he said. The U.S. exports about 6 million tons of packaging papers globally. However, about 70% of the nation's external fiber trade is with Canada and Mexico, 'so as long as that trading relationship continues, that's going to cover the lion's share of the business we do,' he said. U.S. exports of recovered fiber to global markets have been declining in recent years, and the U.S. has focused on domestic investments meant to expand manufacturing that uses recycled fiber, namely OCC and mixed paper, he said. He estimated that AF&PA companies have announced about $7 billion in recent investments, 'so we're seeing a long-term positive trend in U.S. mill consumption that's helping to offset some of those changes that we're seeing in global trade flows.' At the same time, the U.S. has seen multiple notable mill closures in the first half of 2025. Webber attributed that activity to the industry adjusting its output to market demands. 'As capacity is coming offline, we're making investments in new capacity' while making the overall supply chains more efficient, he said. Webber noted AF&PA is tracking possible tariff impacts on equipment, which is typically imported from regions like Europe. 'It would be unfortunate if the spending and investment that our companies are conducting becomes subject to tariffs," he said. An uncertain trade policy environment is a top challenge for the supply chain, as it impacts productivity output and the job market, critical indicators of the economy's direction, panelists said at Supply Chain Dive's July 23 event, 'Supply Chain Outlook: Trends and Risks to Watch in 2025.' 'After strong early gains this year, the engine's clearly losing steam,' Victoria Bloom, chief economist at the National Association of Manufacturersk, said. Manufacturing accounted for approximately 10% of the United States' gross domestic product during the third quarter of 2024, adding $2.93 trillion to the economy, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology's March 4 blog post. For every dollar spent on the industry, it generates $2.69 in total economic activity, making it 'one of the largest impacts of any sector.' While production output went up 0.1% in June, it's still not a full recovery from April's drop of 0.5%, Bloom said. New orders jumped in May to 8.2%, primarily from the aerospace sector. 'But once you strip out aerospace, growth was nearly flat, and the broader manufacturing base just isn't seeing the same lift,' Bloom said. Reduced manufacturing activity has also dampened hiring, Bloom added. The manufacturing sector lost 15,000 jobs in May and June combined, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Job opening levels plummeted 28% YoY to 414,000 in May — 162,000 less than the year prior, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics news release dated July 1. 'All of this is happening under the backdrop of heightened trade uncertainty,' Bloom said. Inventory levels dipped in April and increased marginally in May, ending less than one percentage point higher year over year. 'There's been some unique cases, such as rare earth magnets, where there's been front loading of those purchases,' Bloom said. 'But ... since this 10% baseline tariffs abroad, many of the manufacturers I've spoken with have been in more of a wait-and-see approach, rather than frontloading those purchases.' The rate pressure has also impacted other specific markets such as ocean and trucking, leading to contingency and altering plans and building buffers that increase supply chain costs. Moreover, if the tariffs go into effect next month, those costs could rise further, Bloom said. She added that manufacturers have been working through existing stocks to delay some of the costs from trickling down, which Bloom anticipates will continue in the coming months. 'That uncertainty is like kryptonite for supply chains,' said Jess Dankert, VP for supply chain at the Retail Industry Leaders Association. 'It makes it hard for supply chains to function at optimal efficiency, and oftentimes, less efficiency equals more cost.' In the meantime, Bloom and Dankert advised companies to closely monitor the tariff deadlines and utilize resources from their trade group associations to stay informed about the latest developments. Additionally, companies should continue to demonstrate resilience and form contingency plans. 'Companies who are going to come out better on the other end amid all this increased uncertainty just won't be riding out the storm, they'll be navigating it,' Bloom said. Photo by Dan Himbrechts/EPA July 25 (UPI) -- Britain and Australia confirmed Friday that they would proceed with a $245 billion nuclear-powered submarine deal as part of a defense pact between the two countries and the United States -- despite Washington rethinking its involvement. Following a meeting, Australian Defense Secretary Richard Marles said he and British Defense Secretary John Healey would sign a 50-year cooperation treaty on Saturday to deliver an Australian fleet of submarines, powered by British nuclear reactors. Marles hailed the deal, part of a trilateral security pact signed in 2021, as the most significant U.K.-Australian treaty signed in the 124-year history of modern Australia. The AUKUS alliance, aimed at countering China's military rise in the Asia-Pacific, called for Australia to be armed with eight nuclear submarines, three repurposed from the United States' existing fleet and the remainder a new SSN-AUKUS submarine that Australia and Britain would build together. However, concerns were raised that the first U.S. submarines wouldn't be handed to Australia within the timeline of the early 2030s because U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is reviewing the Biden administration-brokered AUKUS and the U.S. submarine pipeline was behind time. Healey said they welcomed Hegseth's review as a chance for the new administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to "renew their commitment," which he said he fully expected to happen. Marles said last month that he was "very confident" the United States would remain in AUKUS because of its strategic benefit to all three countries. The pact came into force three days before Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States in January, triggering a review to ensure it is a fit with his "America First" policy. In a meeting in Singapore in June, Hegseth told Marles that Australia should increase defense spending to 3.5% of GDP. Elbridge Colby, the U.S. defense official carrying out Hegseth's review, has said AUKUS could compromise national security if the United States were to begin selling its Virginia-class submarines to Australia in the early 2030s, as per the original agreement. Neither Healey nor Marles would say whether the two countries would go it alone with building the submarines if the United States opted to withdraw. The Australia-U.K. treaty encompasses a comprehensive framework to develop the necessary infrastructure and workforce in Australia to build, operate and support the submarine program, with the deal providing a boost to British exports of more than $26 billion by 2050. "Through the treaty, we are supporting high-skilled, well-paid jobs for tens of thousands of people in both the U.K. and Australia," said Healey. Australian Strategic Policy Institute senior analyst Euan Graham said the new treaty was not sending a message to the Trump administration but was "more of a reflection that AUKUS has always been a 3-way arrangement, and that the U.K.-Australia side of the triangle is vital to its success." He said the program would also produce economies of scale, allowing Britain's Royal Navy to increase its nuclear fleet from seven to 12 submarines.
