Siddaramaiah cites migrant population, to seek Rs 50k crore from Centre for Bengaluru's development
Siddaramaiah
will seek a special central grant of Rs 50,000 crore from the central govt for Bengaluru's development, citing the city's crumbling infrastructure and mounting strain caused by a large migrant population.
Accompanied by top finance department officials, Siddaramaiah will meet Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi Tuesday and submit the state's demands.
Siddaramaiah's team argues that despite being a global city and the hub of India's IT and biotechnology industries, Bengaluru has not received adequate central support.
Basavaraj Rayareddi, economic adviser to the CM and senior Congress functionary, said nearly 40% of Bengaluru's population comprises "outsiders" — those who have migrated to the city for employment.
He said that while this migrant workforce contributes taxes, these revenues are either retained by the Centre or redirected to their home states, leaving Karnataka to bear the cost of public services and infrastructure.
Rayareddi said a comprehensive infrastructure push is critical to keeping Bengaluru globally competitive and the demand for Rs 50,000 crore was aimed at addressing pressing urban challenges such as traffic congestion, housing, water supply, and public transport.

Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah is also likely to raise broader fiscal concerns during the meeting. He is expected to demand restoration of Karnataka's share in central taxes to 4.1%, as recommended by the 14th Finance Commission. Under the 15th Finance Commission, the state's share was reduced to 3.6%, a move Siddaramaiah's team claims has disadvantaged the state.
He is also likely to request compensation for unmet assurances under previous commissions and will urge the Centre ensure Karnataka is treated fairly by the 16th Finance Commission, which will be in force from April 1, 2026, to March 31, 2031.
While there is no official confirmation, sources suggest that Siddaramaiah has also requested an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With no major public engagements scheduled from Wednesday onwards, the Siddaramaiah is likely to use the time to meet other Union ministers to press for state priorities.
Siddaramaiah will also call on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan following governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot's decision to refer a series of state bills for presidential assent.
One key bill proposes a 4% reservation for Muslims in civil contracts valued up to Rs 1 crore, a move that has generated massive political debate.
The other bills awaiting approval include a proposed amendment to the Right to Education Act mandating instruction in Kannada or mother tongue from Classes 1 to 5; a bill seeking to tax owners of mineral-rich lands such as those containing bauxite; an amendment enabling e-registration of property transactions; a proposal to introduce reservations in notary appointments for SCs, STs, OBCs, women, and differently-abled individuals; and a controversial amendment to the law governing Hindu religious institutions that seeks to channel revenues from wealthy temples to those with lower incomes.

YSRCP accuses Andhra govt of large-scale land irregularities in Vizag
Visakhapatnam, Jul 27 (PTI) YSRCP leader and former minister Gudivada Amarnath on Sunday accused the TDP-led coalition government of 'large-scale land irregularities" and said it was behaving like a 'real estate agency" while allotting public lands to associates, firms and realtors at 'unjustifiably" low prices here. He alleged that the state government diverted prime land to newly incorporated firms with no credentials, undermining previous IT development plans initiated under the YSRCP regime. 'The TDP-led coalition government has committed massive irregularities in land allocations in Visakhapatnam since the government was formed," Amarnath said while addressing a press conference. He alleged that private companies received valuable land at rates as low as Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore per acre, calling it a 'quid pro quo'. He noted the land deals had created no IT jobs for Andhra's youth. The former minister further alleged that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and IT Minister Nara Lokesh were directly overseeing these land deals, and that public land was being 'looted" to benefit their associates. The YSRCP leader linked Naidu's frequent visits to Singapore to alleged corruption and old ties with tainted individuals there. Amarnath said that the YSRCP would launch a mass movement against the land scam and hold the Naidu-led coalition government accountable for allegedly diverting public wealth for private gains. Meanwhile, there was no immediate reaction from the ruling TDP. PTI MS GDK KH view comments First Published: July 27, 2025, 23:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Farmers protest in Manapparai over loan denials, water crisis
Trichy: Members of the Desiya Thenninthiya Nadhigal Inaippu Vivasayigal Sangam, led by P Ayyakannu, staged a protest at the Manapparai bus stand on Sunday, raising key demands related to farm distress, water scarcity, and agricultural loan policies. The protesters said cooperative banks were denying fresh crop loans on the grounds of low CIBIL scores, even to those who had repaid previous loans. They demanded exemption from CIBIL score criteria for agricultural loans and called for fresh loans to be issued within a week of repayment. Highlighting rising input costs, farmers sought an increase in crop loan limits and criticised the Centre for failing to deliver on the promise of Minimum Support Price (MSP) at twice the input cost. They also questioned why farm loans are not waived while public sector banks have written off loans in other sectors between FY16 and FY25. Their other demands included interlinking of southern rivers, water supply from Mettur or Aliyar dam to the Ponnani River and Kannoothu dam, a monthly pension of ₹5,000 for farmers, round-the-clock three-phase electricity, and installation of CCTV cameras along the national highway to curb theft. Carrying placards, the protesters urged the government to act immediately to safeguard farmers' lives and livelihoods.
