Auburn basketball's offseason took a sudden and unwelcome turn over the weekend as rising star point guard Tahaad Pettiford was arrested Saturday morning in Lee County, Alabama, on suspicion of DUI.

According to public records, the 19-year-old was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Though his blood alcohol concentration was not released, Alabama state law makes it illegal for anyone under 21 to drive with a BAC of 0.02% or higher.
His bond was set at $1,000. At the time of this writing, Auburn has not issued a public statement regarding the arrest, and it remains to be seen if Pettiford will face disciplinary action from the program.
Pettiford's arrest comes at a time when expectations around Auburn basketball were sky-high. After a standout freshman season in which he averaged 11.6 points, 2.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 22.9 minutes per game, helping the Tigers to their second Final Four in school history, Pettiford looked primed for a breakout sophomore year.

He tested the 2025 NBA Draft waters and impressed scouts at the combine, posting a 42-inch vertical and a strong scrimmage performance. Still, he opted to return to the Plains, hoping to boost his draft stock even further in 2026.
Bruce Pearl had already hinted that Pettiford would take over as the team's starting point guard, stepping into a larger leadership role following key departures from last year's 32-win squad.

Pettiford was expected to headline a reloaded roster that includes several transfers and newcomers, all working under the Tigers' new Nike partnership, which begins this season.
With the team set to take part in the Nike Exhibition Series this fall, fans were eager to see Pettiford in action again. Now, there's uncertainty hanging over one of Auburn's most important pieces. Whether this incident affects his role or availability remains unknown, but it has cast a shadow on what was shaping up to be an exciting new chapter for the program.

‘I Want to Clear My Name': Deported Migrant Takes First Step to Sue the U.S.

A Venezuelan migrant took the first step on Thursday toward suing the United States for what he says was his wrongful detention and removal to a notorious prison in El Salvador. Neiyerver Adrián Leon Rengel, 27, spent four months in the Terrorism Confinement Center, or CECOT, where he said he was beaten and abused. He filed an administrative claim on Thursday with the Homeland Security Department, accusing U.S. immigration agencies of removing him without due process. It is the first such claim to be filed by one of the 252 Venezuelan men who were expelled and sent to El Salvador in March, his lawyers said, and is a necessary step before taking legal action against the U.S. government in federal court. Mr. Rengel, who is seeking $1.3 million in damages, was released last week as part of a large-scale prisoner swap between Venezuela and the United States. He is now living in Venezuela. 'I want to clear my name,' he said in a phone interview late Wednesday from his home in the state of Miranda. 'I am not a bad person.' The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately comment on Mr. Rengel's claim. The detention of Venezuelan men in El Salvador in March was one of the first high-profile efforts to fulfill President Trump's campaign promise of mass deportations. His administration has accused the migrants of belonging to a Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua, and his administration has used the Alien Enemies Act, a rarely invoked wartime law, to justify capturing and removing many of the men to El Salvador. Orioles closer Félix Bautista placed on injured list with right shoulder discomfort

CLEVELAND — Baltimore Orioles closer Félix Bautista, who is tied for sixth in the American League with 19 saves, was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday with right shoulder discomfort. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said the right-hander felt uncomfortable while stretching in the bullpen Wednesday during a 3-2 loss to the Cleveland Guardians. Bautista will undergo an MRI when the Orioles return home Friday. 'The (dugout) phone rang in the seventh inning last night and I thought, 'That is not good,'' Mansolino said. 'Then I heard it get slammed down and knew it wasn't good. 'Félix had started his process of getting loose and that's when it flared up.' Bautista did not pitch in the first three games of the series in Cleveland, last seeing action on Sunday at Tampa Bay when he earned his 19th save in 20 opportunities. He missed the entire 2024 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. The 30-year-old Dominican has a 1-1 record and 2.60 ERA in 35 appearances, limiting opponents to a .134 batting average over 34 2/3 innings. Bautista has struck out 50 and walked 23. 'We just have to hope it's not too serious,' Mansolino said. The Orioles will use a closer-by-committee in the short term with righty setup men Seranthony Domínguez and Yennier Cano at the front of the line. 'We're going to have to bump up their roles,' Mansolino said. 'We'll figure it out.' Bautista will not enter free agency until 2028, but is eligible for arbitration following this season. The 6-foot-8, 285-pounder is in the final year of a two-year, $2 million contract. With the Orioles out of wild-card contention, they are expected to be active sellers before the July 31 trade deadline. ___ AP MLB:

Trump Ally Sues Powell Demanding FOMC Meeting Public Access

An investment firm headed by a supporter of President Donald Trump sued Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell and other Fed officials demanding public access to monetary policy meetings. James Fishback's Azoria Capital said in a suit filed Thursday that the decades-old practice of holding Federal Open Market Committee meetings behind closed doors violates government transparency laws. The fund asked a federal court in Washington to require the Fed to open its July 29-30 meeting.
