It's Scheffler versus McIlroy at U.S. Junior Amateur – well, sort of
Well, sort of.
The top two ranked players in junior golf, No. 1 Miles Russell and No. 2 Luke Colton, will face off in one of four quarterfinal matches on Friday morning at Trinity Forest in Dallas.
Russell, a 16-year-old from Jacksonville Beach, Florida, survived a scare in Wednesday's first round of match play, rallying from 2 down through three holes to win in extra holes. He made easier work of his opponents on Thursday, beating Lucas Latimer, 3 and 2, before taking down Miguel Garcia, 4 and 2.
Colton, 17 years old and from nearby Frisco, rolled Texas A&M signee Shiv Parmar, 6 and 5, in the Round of 32 and then eliminated 15-year-old Chase Bauer, 3 and 1, to earn himself a second date with Russell in about a month.
Colton and Russell last played a match against each other in the Round of 16 at the North and South Amateur in June. Colton won that match in 21 holes.
Need further proof that this encore will be closely contested, look at these numbers:
• In 48 common rounds since the start of 2024, Colton and Russell are 21-21-6 against each other
• During that same span, they both boast 70.1 scoring averages
It's possible that Friday's match also helps decide the 10-man U.S. Walker Cup team that will compete at Cypress Point this September. Russell, at No. 18 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, had the greater shot starting this week, but the 26th-ranked Colton's stock would shoot up should he beat Russell and ultimately win this championship.
That match begins at 8:30 a.m. ET.
In Friday's other matchups:
Hamilton Coleman of Augusta, Georgia, who won last year's AJGA Junior Players in a playoff over Blades Brown, will meet Sohan Patel, who joins fellow lefties Russell and Colton in the top half of the bracket. Just two lefties have ever won the U.S. Junior – Brian Harman (2003) and Cory Whitsett (2007). Coleman won each of his last three holes against the red-hot Tyler Watts (also a lefty) in a 2-and-1 win in the Round of 16.
England's Ben Bolton will play China's Qiyou Wu. No Englishman has ever won, while Wu would be the second champion from China, following Wenyi Ding in 2022. Wu needed 21 holes to eliminate Ronin Banerjee, who on Wednesday won his first-round match, 9 and 8, tying the championship record.
Nicholas Gross, a rising sophomore at Alabama, draws Vietnam's Nguyen Anh Minh, who is currently ranked No. 52 in WAGR.

He then compared that to 'playing both ends of the floor' or 'going both ways.' Later, he mentioned Travis Hunter, a rookie for the Jacksonville Jaguars who's already earned top 10 status in this year's draft. Russell highlighted Hunter's versatility in the sport, saying his value as a player was upped due to his ability to play both defense and offense. 'Unfortunately, when we talk about bisexual people, we don't see it with that same lens,' he continued. 'As if one day I could be waking up and 'playing offense,' then midplay switch to play defense and ruin my own team.' Outside of sports, he said, 'Or, I could be in a relationship with a man and decide, 'Hey, actually today, I want to be in a relationship with a woman,' which, for some people, that's not an issue.' In both sports and queer culture, he said he wanted the idea of 'going both ways' to be 'seen as a value, as added paint to the diverse canvas that is our society.' He closed the video saying, 'So the next time that you think about a bisexual person 'going both ways,' think about them as the all-star of their team.' 'What an unbelievable playmaker': New Texas A&M WR praised ahead of fall camp
Texas A&M's 2025 passing offense is expected to make a significant jump compared to last season, mainly due to the offseason addition of NC State wide receiver KC Concepcion, who is considered one of the fastest and best route runners in the country. On Tuesday, during the Aggies' press conference to open fall camp, which officially begins on Wednesday, head coach Mike Elko and starting quarterback Marcel Reed heaped plenty of praise on the junior receiver, noting that Texas A&M's offense in on track to be much more consistent through the air, as Concepcion provides Reed a true No. 1 option. After junior Noah Thomas transferred to Georgia, landing Concepcion became a mandatory objective, knowing that Marcel Reed would become the full-time starter after Conner Weigman transferred to Houston. So far, so good, as Elko and Reed couldn't hold back their excitement regarding Concepcion's likely impact this season. "What an unbelievable playmaker" Elko stated. "He was a guy that we paid a lot of attention to when we played him, and he has absolutely lived up to it. … He's ready to go on and have a really, really big year for us." During Elko's two-year head coaching stint at Duke, he became well aware of Concepcion, who faced Elko's tough defense twice during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. One of the main reasons the North Carolina native chose Texas A&M was Marcel Reed's dual-threat ability, especially making plays out of structure, which Reed recounted during their first practice session together. He has failed to qualify for Q2 on several occasions and looked visibly distraught during a media session after qualifying in Spa. "Kimi's had a few tough weekends, but he's getting a lot of engineering support from Bono, and the engineers on that side of the garage," Shovlin told the media. "We as a team are well aware that the thing that we need to focus on is the weaknesses in the car, not the bits that Kimi's struggling with. "The fact is that George is leaning on all his experience, quite a bit of it, driving difficult cars to get the qualifying laps out of it." Mercedes will have three weeks after the upcoming race in Hungary, due to the summer break in August, which should allow the team to reset and regain its bearings.
