Arkansas police charged a 28-year-old school teacher in the killing of a married couple who were hiking with their children at Devil's Den State Park, finding him in a nearby city after a five-day search and public pleas for trailgoers to look through their photos. State Police arrested Andrew James McGann at a barbershop in Springdale, said Col. Stacie Rhoads, commander of the department's criminal investigation division. He was charged with two counts of capital murder and was being held Thursday in the state's Washington County jail. Police had released a composite sketch and photo of a person of interest they were searching for in the attack. The State Police have released few details about the investigation, including how the couple was killed. Rhoads said the public's help and video footage they received was instrumental in capturing McGann. Tips came in from as far away as Washington state, she said. 'It was overwhelming,' she said. Jared Cleveland, the superintendent of Springdale Public Schools, said in a statement that McGann had not yet begun his employment and that the district could not provide more information, citing the investigation. Sierra Marcum said three years ago, her son was a student in McGann's fourth grade classroom in Flower Mound, Texas, and described him as the 'most standoff teacher she had ever met.' BMW stays on course despite Trump's tariffs
BERLIN, July 31 (Reuters) - German carmaker BMW ( opens new tab maintained its full-year guidance on Thursday, holding strong against the threat of U.S. tariffs as the company's large manufacturing presence in the country gives it an edge on competitors. European carmakers are still digesting a new 15% tariff agreed between the European Union and U.S. President Donald Trump, which is lower than the current rate but still poses a major obstacle to their export-focused business. Of the deal, BMW said it assumed negotiations were ongoing, adding that its forecast included mitigating measures in response to increased tariffs. In 2025, the group expects a tariff-related impact of around 1.25 percentage points on its automotive segment's profit margin, the company said. In the first half of the year, the impact was some 1.5 points. In the second quarter, the EBIT margin in the segment came in at 5.4%, just missing analysts' forecast for 5.5% in a company-provided poll, but within its 2025 target range of 5.0% to 7.0%. Lufthansa beats Q2 profit forecasts, confirms full-year guidance
BERLIN/LONDON, July 31 (Reuters) - Lufthansa ( opens new tab reported better-than-expected second-quarter results on Thursday, boosted by low oil prices and currency effects, and confirmed its full-year guidance. The German airline group reported an operating profit of 871 million euros ($995.3 million), compared with a forecast 805 million euros, according to an analyst poll compiled by Lufthansa. That is 27% higher against the 686 million euros reported in the same quarter last year. The company said the improved earnings were mainly due to its expanded flight programme in the passenger business, the positive effects from its investment in Italy's ITA Airways and a doubling in the operating result in its logistics segment. "Although the second quarter was again marked by geopolitical crises and economic uncertainties, we are today confirming our positive outlook for the full year," Chief Executive Carsten Spohr said in a statement. Lufthansa has struggled with spiralling costs tied to labour as well as a slower return in traffic from Asia, issuing two profit warnings last year. Spohr said Lufthansa's core brand had made strides in punctuality and operational stability amid ongoing restructuring efforts. Lufthansa also said demand in the United States remained strong despite the weakness of the U.S. dollar. Europe's major airlines are cautiously monitoring a possible dip in transatlantic travel to the United States as European travellers have shied away from booking trips there this year.
