Mikel Arteta '100% sure' Arsenal dealt with Thomas Partey's situation in the right way

Express Tribune21-07-2025
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed confidence that the club followed the correct procedures when handling the situation with former midfielder Thomas Partey, who is currently under police investigation for multiple counts of rape.
Partey, 32, left Arsenal at the end of his contract on 30 June. Just days later, on 4 July, he was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.
The charges relate to offences reportedly committed in 2021 and 2022, involving three women. Two counts of rape involve one woman, while a second woman is linked to three counts of rape. The final charge pertains to sexual assault against a third woman, as reported by the BBC.
Partey, who denies the charges, has stated through his lawyer that he 'welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.' The investigation into Partey began in February 2022 after a police report of rape was filed.
While Arsenal are currently in Singapore for their pre-season tour, Arteta was asked about the club's handling of the situation at a press conference ahead of their match against AC Milan on Wednesday.
'The club was very clear in its statement,' Arteta said, adding that due to the ongoing legal proceedings, he could not comment further on the case.
When pressed further about whether the club followed the correct processes, Arteta responded confidently, saying, '100%, yes.'
Partey is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 5 August to address the charges.
Partey, who joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid for £45 million in October 2020, made 35 Premier League appearances last season, scoring four goals as the Gunners finished second.
He also played 12 times in the Champions League, helping Arsenal reach the semi-finals before they were eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain, the eventual winners.

Ollie Watkins, Benjamin Sesko emerge as Manchester United's striker targets

Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins and RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko have emerged as Manchester United's top striker targets in the current transfer window. The club's hierarchy has acknowledged the need to offload some unwanted players to fund new arrivals, although such deals may not materialise until closer to the September 1 deadline, as reported by BBC sport. Manchester United is in contact with camps of both strikers to understand the conditions of a potential deal, according to The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell. #MUFC narrow striker search to Ollie Watkins + Benjamin Sesko. Club in touch on both players to figure out suitability + cost. Nicolas Jackson ruled out due to Chelsea demands. Watkins is Premier League proven, Sesko has high potential ceiling. More ⬇️ — Laurie Whitwell (@lauriewhitwell) July 29, 2025 Newcastle United, still searching for key signings after missing out on multiple targets, is reportedly keen on Slovenian Sesko, who scored 13 goals in 33 Bundesliga appearances last season. With uncertainty surrounding their own forward, Alexander Isak, Newcastle's interest is significant. Meanwhile, Villa has made it clear that they are not willing to sell England international Watkins, who netted 16 Premier League goals last season. United believe Villa's stance could change as the deadline approaches, but they view the £60m asking price for the 29-year-old Watkins as too steep, especially considering his contract runs until 2028. In the meantime, Rasmus Højlund, signed for £72m this summer, remains United's first-choice striker despite a relatively quiet pre-season. The Danish forward has yet to score in two appearances and missed a notable opportunity in Saturday's 2-1 win over West Ham at MetLife Stadium. United have already brought in three new players this summer, spending nearly £130m on attacking duo Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, alongside defender Diego Leon. Cunha and Mbeumo are expected to play in attacking midfield roles, with the club continuing to seek additional reinforcements.

England beat Spain to retain Women's Euro

England players lift the trophy after beating Spain on penalties to win the Women's Euro 2025. Photo: AFP Chloe Kelly converted the decisive kick as England beat Spain 3-1 on penalties to lift the Women's Euro 2025 trophy after Sunday's game had finished 1-1 at the end of extra time, allowing the Lionesses to avenge their defeat in the World Cup final two years ago and retain their continental crown. It looked as though Spain would repeat their victory over England in Sydney in 2023 as they dominated the game at St Jakob-Park in Basel and led through Mariona Caldentey's first-half header. But England did not panic, having already trailed against both Sweden in the quarter-finals and Italy in the semis before finding a way to win. Alessia Russo headed in their equaliser just before the hour mark, and no further goals meant a shoot-out in which Kelly -- who once again had a huge impact off the bench -- netted the winner. "I was cool, I was composed. I knew I was going to hit the back of the net," Kelly told the BBC of her penalty. It was an agonising way to lose for Spain, but they failed to score three of their spot-kicks, with reigning Ballon d'Or Aitana Bonmati seeing her effort saved. Sarina Wiegman's England are therefore back-to-back European champions, three years after they defeated Germany in extra time at Wembley to win a first women's major tournament. "What a team. What a game. What drama. You dug deep when it mattered most and you've made the nation proud. History makers," British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who was at the match, wrote on X. Defeating Spain helps make up for the pain of losing the World Cup final in 2023, and England's victory also confirms Wiegman's place among the coaching greats. She has now won three consecutive European Championships, having led her native Netherlands to victory in 2017 before doing the same with England three years ago. "We said we can win by any means and that's what we have shown again today. I am so proud of the team and the staff. It is incredible," said Wiegman, whose team lost to France in their first match at the tournament. "Losing your first game and becoming European champions is incredible," she added. Spain fell short in their quest to add a maiden European Championship title to the World Cup they won in Australia. La Roja dominated possession as expected, but ultimately paid the price for not killing the game against an England side who never know when they are beaten. "I am in shock," Bonmati told broadcaster TVE before apologising for failing from the spot. "Football is cruel. Everything seems bad right now, but I think we played the best football during the tournament." English resilience England, meanwhile, had been 2-0 down against Sweden in the last eight before scoring twice to force extra time as they eventually won on penalties. Then substitute Michelle Agyemang's 96th-minute equaliser denied Italy in the semi-finals, when Kelly netted the extra-time winner

Odegaard shines as Arsenal beat Newcastle

Martin Odegaard scored the winner from the spot in the 84th minute as Arsenal beat Newcastle 3-2 in a pre-season friendly in Singapore on Sunday. Viktor Gyokeres, the Swedish international striker signed on Saturday from Sporting Lisbon, was introduced to the crowd of more than 38,700 before watched from the bench as his new club won an entertaining encounter in the Singapore heat. The 27-year-old could make his debut when Arsenal take on Tottenham in Hong Kong next Thursday in another friendly. "We are increasing the quality of the squad all the time, so we're super happy to have Viktor with us," said manager Mikel Arteta. "It has been a long journey to get him here." Newcastle, who were missing striker Alexander Isak as he considers his future, scored with their first attack in the sixth minute. New signing Anthony Elanga blasted the ball into the bottom corner after meeting a cross from Sandro Tonali. But Arsenal overcame a shaky start, regaining their rhythm and control of the game. Mikel Merino levelled in the 33rd minute from Kai Havertz's flick. Arsenal were ahead two minutes later when defender Alex Murphy fumbled the ball into his own net. The Magpies almost conceded a third after the restart but had keeper Nick Pope to thank after he stopped a bicycle kick by Bukayo Saka. Against the run of play, substitute Jacob Murphy levelled for Newcastle a minute later after his shot from outside the box sneaked past David Raya. With the match seemingly headed for a draw, it was 15-year-old Max Dowman's deep run into the box, where he was clipped by Joelinton, that proved to be the game-changer. Odegaard made no mistake from the spot to give Arsenal their second win in Singapore following a 1-0 victory over AC Milan. "Playing against Newcastle today wasn't just a friendly. It was a real test," said Arteta.
