"They want to change the Constitution": Priyank Kharge slams RSS over call to drop 'socialism', 'secularism'
Alleging that the RSS wants to 'alter' the Indian Constitution, Kharge said that these are the same people who 'staged a protest when the constituent assembly debates were going on and burned the constitution.'
Responding to recent remarks made by Hosabale, the Karnataka Minister said, 'Very clearly, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar in his last speech has defined anti-nationals as those who create animosity by bringing in caste, and those people who are going to impede the social, political and economic progress of the country are the real anti-national. Those people who sow the seeds of communal hatred in society are anti-national. So who's doing that right now?...'
'They want to change the words of the Constitution. They want to change the constitution. This is the narrative they want to bring in... RSS has never been for the constitution. These are the same bunch of people who staged a protest when the constituent assembly debates were going on. They burned the constitution and said that we want the Manusmriti as our constitution. Didn't they say that? Please ask them to read their magazine, the Organiser's archives, what they have written on the 26th of January 1950... The answer lies there itself...' he added.
On being asked if Congress is thinking of banning the RSS, Kharge said, 'We will see. It's not the first time they have been banned, right? Didn't Sardar Patel ban them? Then they went and fell at his feet. They pleaded no, no, we will follow the law of the land. After that, Indira Gandhiji banned it again. They went and said No, we will cooperate. We will abide by the laws of the land. There cannot be one law of the land for the rest of the country and for one organisation like this...'
Earlier on Thursday, addressing a program on the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale remarked that during the Emergency, terms like 'Socialism' and 'Secularism' were forcibly inserted into the Constitution, a move that needs to be reconsidered today.
He emphasised that the Emergency wasn't just a misuse of power, but an attempt to crush civil liberties. Millions were imprisoned, and freedom of the press was suppressed. He said that those who imposed the Emergency and trampled the Constitution and democracy have never apologised. If they cannot apologise personally, they should do so on behalf of their ancestors.
Hosabale was speaking at an event held at Dr Ambedkar International Centre, jointly organised by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (under the Ministry of Culture) and Ambedkar International Centre. (ANI)

The BJP's dominance will soon end," he added. The RJD leader also attacked Election Commission over electoral roll revision, accusing it taking away voting rights of poor in the state. "This is a significant issue as the rights of the poor and their voting rights are being taken away. The Election Commission is meeting with political parties. We want to ask what should be done if there is no time given for meetings. This is injustice because it seems there will be challenges for the people in the coming days," Tejashwi said. "Everyone is exposed, and one wonders why the Election Commission is unwilling to meet. It is supposed to be an independent body, but it appears to be singing praises of the BJP and RSS," he added. According to the poll body, the special intensive revision of electoral rolls is part of its crackdown on illegal immigrants from countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. The poll panel reminded the constitutional provision that says only Indian citizens can vote. "The Constitution of India is supreme. All citizens, political parties, and the Election Commission of India follow the Constitution," EC said in a statement. The assembly election is scheduled for the end of the year, where a high-stakes battle is expected. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) — consisting of the Janata Dal (United) led by Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and the Bharatiya Janata Party — will face off against the Mahagathbandhan, which includes the Congress, RJD, and Left parties.

In June and July of 2025, US President Donald Trump and former presidential advisor Elon Musk engaged in a spectacular public feud. It began after Musk resigned from the Trump administration and denounced the president's flagship legislation, the 'One Big Beautiful Bill', as a 'disgusting abomination.' The clash quickly escalated. Musk accused Trump, without evidence, of appearing in unreleased government files related to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The White House dismissed the claim. Trump retaliated by claiming Musk had 'lost his mind' and threatened to cancel his federal contracts, worth an estimated $38 billion. The episode was dramatic, but not unusual. Donald Trump's White House broke records in more ways than one. Chief among them: the sheer number of people who came and went. Trump's inner circle was more like a revolving door. And as time has passed, many of those who once worked closest with him have become his loudest critics. A 2023 Washington Post article put it plainly stating, 'No president has ever attracted more public detractors who were formerly in his inner circle.' The list includes a vice president, generals, cabinet members, lawyers, spokespeople, campaign aides—many of whom are now openly backing his rivals. In 2024, PBS called it 'a striking chorus of detractors, one without precedent in the modern era.' According to the Brookings Institution, Trump had a 92 percent turnover in his 'A-Team'—the top decision-makers in the White House. No other recent administration comes close. Early media coverage dubbed him Trump's 'chief fixer on Capitol Hill' and 'key to the first 100 days.' But the alliance shattered on January 6, 2021. When Trump asked Pence to block the certification of Joe Biden's election win, Pence refused. Trump attacked him publicly. Rioters stormed the Capitol chanting, 'Hang Mike Pence.' Pence later said, 'Anyone who puts themselves over the Constitution should never be President of the United States.' He also said of Trump's praise for Putin, 'I know the difference between a genius and a war criminal.' In 2024, Pence unsuccessfully ran against Trump in the Republican primary. 2. John Bolton – Former National Security Advisor John Bolton was Trump's third National Security Advisor, serving for 17 months before they split over disagreements on foreign policy, including Iran and North Korea. Trump said he fired Bolton; Bolton insisted he resigned. In his memoir The Room Where It Happened, Bolton called Trump 'erratic,' 'stunningly uninformed,' and 'unfit for office.' He claimed foreign leaders 'think he is a laughing fool.' When Trump returned to power in 2024, he revoked Bolton's security clearance and labeled him a 'very dumb person' and a 'stupid guy.' 3. John Kelly – Former Chief of Staff A retired Marine general, John Kelly served as Trump's longest-tenured chief of staff. He tried to bring structure to a chaotic White House, but later became one of Trump's most pointed critics. He told The New York Times that Trump 'certainly falls into the general definition of fascist, for sure,' and described his leadership style as 'dictatorial,' 'fascist,' and lacking empathy. Trump responded, 'John Kelly is a lowlife, and a bad General, whose advice in the White House I no longer sought, and told him to move on!' 4. Jim Mattis – Former Secretary of Defence Jim Mattis, Trump's first defence secretary, resigned in 2018 over the decision to withdraw US troops from Syria. In his resignation letter, he stressed the importance of alliances, in an apparent rebuke of Trump, but otherwise stayed largely quiet. In 2020, Mattis broke his silence, writing, 'Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people — does not even pretend to try.' He continued, 'Instead he tries to divide us. We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort.' The Atlantic reported that Mattis and his aides believed Trump had 'limited cognitive ability, and was of generally dubious character.' According to journalist Bob Woodward, Mattis was so alarmed by Trump's potential to launch a nuclear strike against North Korea that he slept in gym clothes and prayed at the National Cathedral. 5. Mark Milley – Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley served as Trump's top military officer, but after the 2020 election and the January 6 attack, he began to speak out. In Woodward's book War, Milley is quoted calling Trump a 'fascist to the core' and 'the most dangerous person to this country.' During his tenure, Milley had placed a call to Chinese leadership, reassuring them that the US would not launch a nuclear strike against Beijing. Trump described these calls as 'an act so egregious that, in times gone by, the punishment would have been DEATH!' In his final public remarks before retiring in 2023, Milley said the military did not swear an oath to a 'wannabe dictator.' Biden later issued him a pre-emptive pardon in case Trump sought retribution. Milley thanked him, saying he didn't want to spend the rest of his life 'fighting those who unjustly might seek retribution for perceived slights.' Honourable mentions The list doesn't end there. Some of Trump's earliest hires and closest confidantes have since turned on him—some in blunt, unforgettable terms: Rex Tillerson, first Secretary of State: 'His understanding of global history was really limited.' Surjewala's visit aimed at preparing ground to unseat Karnataka CM: BJP
Bengaluru: The Karnataka BJP claimed on Wednesday that the visit of Congress National General Secretary and Karnataka incharge Randeep Singh Surjewala to the state is aimed at preparing the ground to oust Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Addressing a Press conference at the BJP state headquarters, Jagannath Bhavan in Bengaluru, BJP State President and MLA, B.Y. Vijayendra alleged that Surjewala had come to the state to prepare the ground for Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's resignation and though he has camped in the state he has shown no concern about the failure of this corrupt government. He claimed that Surjewala was speaking to legislators to gather their opinion and the competition for the CM's post was intensifying and the state would witness political horse-trading. Referring to Ramanagara Congress MLA Iqbal Ansari's statement that Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar has the support of 100 MLAs and should be the next CM, Vijayendra said that senior Congress MLAs like B.R. Patil and Raju Kage are also openly speaking against the Chief Minister. "The CM has lost the confidence of even his own party MLAs," he asserted, and appealed to the Governor to take note of possible horse-trading. Responding to the Chief Minister's remark that 35–40 deaths in Hassan were possibly due to COVID vaccination, Vijayendra asked, 'Was COVID vaccine administered only in Hassan? The vaccine was given to crores across India and exported to countries around the world.' He urged the state government to conduct a thorough investigation into the deaths in Hassan and condemned the CM's statement as irresponsible. He also urged the government to convene an emergency meeting and ensure adequate medicine stock at the taluk and district levels. Commenting on Minister Priyank Kharge's statement regarding a possible ban on the RSS, Vijayendra ridiculed it as "a daydream of a pauper." He sarcastically stated that even Mallikarjun Kharge, who is Priyank's father and the National President of the Congress party doesn't believe that the Congress will come to power. He added that not even senior Congress leaders like Rahul Gandhi or Sonia Gandhi believe the Congress can return to power at the Centre. He further stated that the RSS is a nationalist organization, and even Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru welcomed the Sangh's contributions during the India-China war and allowed it to participate in the Republic Day parade. "Nehru and Indira Gandhi had banned the RSS, but it was later revoked. Calling for another ban reflects a lack of historical understanding," he said. Vijayendra hailed the Karnataka High Court's order transferring the investigation into the Valmiki Tribal Development Corporation case to the CBI as a victory for the BJP's fight. "This is a major judgment. Bigger names will be exposed. The BJP welcomes the verdict," he stated. He also claimed that due to BJP's sustained pressure, CM Siddaramaiah was forced to drop Minister B. Nagendra from the Cabinet. 'The CM is now desperate to bring him back. The media knows very well that the CM himself is involved in the scam. Money could not have gone out of state without Finance Department approval,' he alleged. Vijayendra said the situation in the state is deteriorating daily, the administration has collapsed, and Congress MLAs are locked in a power struggle. "The race for the CM's chair is intensifying. As a result, no developmental work is happening, and the government is ignoring farmers' issues," he criticized.
