Quarterback Jake Retzlaff makes decision on his BYU future after rape allegations

New York Post5 days ago
Jake Retzlaff is planning on leaving the BYU football program after admitting to having premarital sex – a violation of the school's honor code – and facing a seven-game suspension to start next season, according to multiple reports.
The quarterback made the admission as part of a response to a civil lawsuit which alleges that Retzlaff had raped a woman at his Provo, Utah home in 2023.

During a meeting last week, Retzlaff had been informed that he would likely face suspension for breaking the honor code and began telling members of the football program that he had the intention to leave the school.
Retzlaff has already cleaned out his locker at the Student Athlete Building and is expected to publicly announce his decision to play elsewhere later this week, Desert News reported.
He had been with the team and was taking part in summer workouts, according to ESPN.
A Utah woman filed the lawsuit last month, alleging Retzlaff raped, strangled and bit her during the November 2023 encounter.
Retzlaff's lawyer denied the allegations in a legal response on Friday.
'Mr. Retzlaff specifically and categorically denies each and every and all allegations that he bit, raped or strangled AG, which are ridiculous and bizarre allegations, all of which are false and untrue,' part of the response read.

The lawyer also described the encounter as consensual.
A source told Desert News that the lawsuit is expected to be 'resolved' this week.
The woman and football player connected through social media and this led her to come over to play video games on or around Nov. 22, 2023.
The woman arrived with friends and several friends and teammates of Retzlaff were at the house, but later in the evening, after the woman's friends left, Retzlaff and the female started watching a movie and began to kiss, according to the suit.

'At some point they began to kiss, but Jane Doe A.G. did not want to do anything more,' the lawsuit stated. 'Retzlaff began escalating the situation … and Jane Doe A.G. tried to de-escalate the situation and attempted to slow things down, trying to pull away, and saying 'wait.' She did not want to do anything sexual with him.'
Despite attempts to say 'no' and 'wait, stop' Retzlaff forced himself on her, according to the suit, and put his hands around her neck and then raped her.
Retzlaff has denied the allegations.
The California native took over the starting job last season and threw 2,947 yards for 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Gonzaga Legend to Play in NBA Summer League for Third Straight Year

Gonzaga Legend to Play in NBA Summer League for Third Straight Year originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Even after using all five first round picks last week, the Brooklyn Nets want to keep Gonzaga legend Drew Timme around for at least another year. Advertisement Timme had his team option exercised by Brooklyn on Saturday, along with Keon Johnson, Tyrese Martin, and Jalen Wilson, but that won't stop the big man from doing whatever he can to make sure he sticks with the big club in 2025-26. After averaging 12.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in his first nine NBA games last season, Timme is planning to join Brooklyn's roster for the Las Vegas Summer League. "I'm still trying to make it and stay in it," Timme told CBS reporter Isabel Gonzalez. "It was cool to make it, but you know, it can also get taken away at any moment too, just as it got given." Advertisement Timme also knows the roster in Brooklyn got a lot tighter last Wednesday when the Nets used all five first round picks; No. 8, 19, 22, 26, and 27, to acquire players for the current roster rather than consolidating by packaging a few picks to move up in the draft. Instead the Nets came home with BYU guard Egor Demin, French guard Nolan Traoré, North Carolina wing Drake Powell, Israeli guard Ben Saraf, and Michigan big man Danny Wolf. Wolf is Timme's biggest competition for a bench role with Brooklyn. He's a true seven footer who can initiate the offense as a passer and ball-handler, while displaying strong footwork and touch around the rim. Neither Timme or Wolf are great defensive players, but Wolf may have the edge due the capital spent bringing him on board - even though Timme has legit NBA experience after last season. Advertisement Timme won't be the only former Zag playing in Summer League this year, with Ryan Nembhard (Dallas Mavericks) and Ben Gregg (Boston Celtics) each getting their first professional experience in Las Vegas in July. Anton Watson is a strong candidate to participate after appearing in nine games as a rookie last year for New York, while Nolan Hickman, Khalif Battle, Malachi Smith, and a few others could find their way to Sin City as well when the league tips off on July 10 at the Thomas & Mack Center at UNLV. Nets sign No. 8 overall pick Egor Demin to rookie scale contract

Former BYU guard Egor Demin, the No. 8 overall pick in the NBA draft, signed his rookie-scale contract with the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday, the team announced. Demin was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team, averaging 10.6 points, 5.5 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.2 steals on 41.2% shooting from the field in 33 games. He finished in double figures 19 times, including a season-high 20 points, seven assists and rebounds on Nov. 8. He will make $6,889,200 next season, according to Spotrac. The 6-foot-9 standout has also represented Russia at the junior level at the 2021 FIBA U16 European Challengers. He averaged 12.2 points, four rebounds, 2.2 steals and two assists on 37.9% shooting from the field in four appearances. Demin became the first five-star recruit to commit to BYU after playing for the Real Madrid youth team over the previous two seasons. He dazzled as a playmaker, ranking third in the conference in assists after setting the freshman program record (180). The 19-year-old was heavily linked to the Nets throughout the predraft process before the organization ultimately selected him in the lottery. He was highly touted because of his size, ballhandling and scoring ability, traits the team focused on this year in the draft. Demin is expected to suit up with the Nets for at least five games in the NBA Summer League, beginning on July 10 against the Oklahoma City Thunder (5:30 p.m. EDT, ESPN2).

Nets' Egor Demin believes he's a good fit for Brooklyn's style of play

NEW YORK -- The Brooklyn Nets surprised many around the NBA when they chose BYU guard Egor Demin with the eighth overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft last week. While many NBA Draft experts had expected Demin to be picked later in the Draft, Brooklyn did not risk Demin being off the board and it seems that the team and Demin understand why the partnership happened this way. "Well, I think I'm just a good, good fit. This team is a good fit for me, and I'm a good fit for this team," Demin said during the Nets' press conference with all of the rookies that the team took in the Draft. Demin was in attendance along with: general manager Sean Marks, head coach Jordi Fernandez, No. 19 pick Nolan Traore, No. 22 pick Drake Powell, No. 26 pick Ben Saraf, and No. 27 pick Danny Wolf. Advertisement "Obviously because it's a lot of athleticism, young guys, and I believe we could be a really high pace and high volume team," Demin continued. "Just being able to run coast to coast. And for me, how efficient can I find those defensive rebounds and just find the outlet as fast as I can. Find somebody in front of me who can finish at the rim or find the corners, right, since we're going to learn a lot of spacing, it's going to be a lot of screens and all that." Demin, 19, is coming off a 2024-25 freshman season at BYU in which he averaged 10.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 41.2% from the field and 27.3% from three-point land. Despite the fact that Brooklyn's selection of Demin was surprising, it's hard to ignore why the Nets were interested in the Russian who stands at 6-foot-8 and 199 pounds and is considered the best passer in the Draft. As Demin discusses his fit for a Nets team led by Fernandez and Marks, it will be interesting to see how much he can improve on his flaws while developing at the same time as four other rookies on the roster. Demin, who struggles with turnovers and outside shooting, will have the Las Vegas Summer League later in July to show what he can do at the NBA level before the coaching staff tries to improve his overall game.
