60,000-seater multi-purpose stadium to come up in Bengaluru
BENGALURU: A new multi-purpose stadium will be constructed in Bengaluru with a seating capacity of 60,000 for which the government has already identified around 50 acres of land, announced Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.
The announcement comes three weeks after the stampede outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations, which claimed 11 lives.
Speaking at the 516th birth anniversary celebration of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda organised by the Department Kannada and Culture Department, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Development Authority here on Friday, Shivakumar said that three places have been identified for the project by former MP DK Suresh and the project may require up to 50 acres of land.
'The preparations for the project is in full swing,' he added.
Shivakumar, who also holds the portfolio of Bengaluru Development, said, 'Developing Bengaluru is not easy as its population has been increasing. We have launched a 40-km tunnel road, planned a network of flyovers spanning 118-km, and lined up Rs 1 lakh crore worth projects in the next three to four years.'
Noting that the government is stressing on creating a clean Bengaluru, the DCM said, 'We're determined to dismantle the garbage mafia. Waste generated in Bengaluru should be handled within Bengaluru without burdening other districts.'
Before the event, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah laid the foundation stone for the Kempegowda Bhavan at Sumanahalli Circle. He assured that the building will be constructed at the earliest and that he himself will inaugurate it upon completion.
Spatikapuri Mahasamsthana Mutt head Nanjavadhuta Swamiji, also present at the event, urged the government to include Kempegowda's contributions in school curriculums and proposed that a major university be named after him to educate future generations about the city's visionary founder.

Ex-MP from Lakshadweep among three acquitted of charges in illegal fuel import case
A CBI court in Kochi Saturday acquitted former Lakshadweep MP and NCP national general secretary Mohammed Faisal and two others in a case pertaining to causing loss to Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) by illegally importing fuel to the islands. The former MP is the ninth accused in the case, while others are P P Hussain Thangal and Beypore port head clerk Abdul Manaf. Faisal and Thangal are partners of Shebna Enterprises, which had a license to import essential commodities to the Lakshadweep. The case was registered in 2009, and the CBI had charged nine accused in 2011, under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. According to CBI, misusing the trade licence, the accused availed diesel from BPCL at subsidy rate and sold the fuel in the islands, causing a loss of Rs 1.4 crore for the public sector oil entity. Considering the shortage of essential commodities in the islands, the Kerala government had given a sales tax exemption of 20 per cent for supply to the Lakshadweep. Accordingly, the state had levied only 4 percent tax for items including diesel, to the islands. According to the CBI, diesel meant to Lakshadweep was illegally sold in Kerala itself, and the BPCL had failed to ensure that the supply reached the islands. Earlier, the court had acquitted six others, including BPCL officials. Advocate M J Santhosh appeared for the accused.

HC sets aside GO 126 allotting 3.7 acres for International Arbitration Centre
Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court division bench of Justices Kunuru Lakshman and Kalasikam Sujana on Friday 'set aside' GO 126, dated December 26-2021, allotting 3.7-acre prime land worth crores, located in Plot no.27, Survey no. 83/1, Raidurg village, Serilingampally mandal, RR district to the International Arbitration and Mediation Centre, Hyderabad. Though the court upheld GO 76 dated November 12 sanctioning Rs. 3 crore to meet the day-to-day expenditure of the centre and GO 6, dated March 17, 2022 wherein the Chief Secretary directed all departments and public sector undertakings to refer all its disputes above 3 crore to the IAMC for arbitration. The bench passed orders setting aside GO allotting 3.7 acres to IAMC, while adjudicating two PILs. The first PIL was filed by Koti Raghuntha Rao, party-in-person; the other was filed by A Venkatarami Reddy, a retired employee. The bench concluded the IAMC--which has been functioning since 2021--performance is abysmal. It expressed deep concern regarding its performance in future. As on January 29 this year the IAMC took up only 15 cases of which 11 were conducted pro-bono; only 57 mediation cases were conducted; of them 17 were conducted pro-bono. The bench cautioned the government to examine incurring of costs by referring cases to IAMC; directed the government to alter its policy of referring cases to IAMC, if costs prove a burden to the exchequer. The bench opined that it is the policy decision of the government to extend financial assistance to a new institution like IAMC at initial stage, but as time goes by, IAMC has to sustain itself financially. But going by its performance for the last five years, the bench stated that its sustenance is difficult in the long run. The bench referred to setting up of 'ICADR' (International Centre for Alternative Dispute Resolution) centre formed by the Government of India in 1995 to promote arbitration, but due to its abysmal performance, despite financial support, ICADR could not deliver results. The court hoped the IAMC does not go the ICADR way. Both PILs were closed.
