Bengaluru to get new stadium with 60,000 seating capacity, says DK Shivakumar. More details

In a significant development following the tragic stampede at Bengaluru's iconic Chinnaswamy Stadium earlier this month, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Friday announced plans for a brand new stadium in the city. The upcoming venue, which will seat 60,000 people, is aimed at easing congestion and improving crowd management during major public events. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. 'We have finalised land for a new stadium in Bengaluru. The proposed capacity is 60,000 seats. More information will be shared shortly,' he said, speaking to reporters. This move comes in the wake of a deadly stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebration on June 4 near Chinnaswamy Stadium, which claimed the lives of 11 people and left several others injured. The incident sparked outrage across the state and prompted strong criticism of the authorities for inadequate crowd control. Chinnaswamy Stadium, located in the heart of the city, has long been a bottleneck during cricket matches and large-scale public events. With a capacity of around 35,000, the stadium was overwhelmed on June 4 when more than three lakh fans reportedly gathered in and around the venue, far exceeding official crowd estimates and police preparedness. The resulting chaos led to a deadly crush and a political storm over administrative lapses. He had hinted at plans to relocate the cricket stadium to a more accessible and less crowded location. 'The government will examine options for shifting the stadium. Such a tragedy should never happen again. It has deeply pained me,' he said after the incident. To prevent such disasters in the future, the state government has also undertaken disciplinary action. Several senior police officials, including the Bengaluru Police Commissioner, were suspended, a move that has drawn both public and political scrutiny. As part of a broader ₹ 1 lakh crore investment in Bengaluru's infrastructure, the new stadium will be built alongside projects such as flyovers and tunnel roads. 'Kempegowda envisioned a world-class Bengaluru. With his vision as our inspiration, we are committed to making this city better,' Shivakumar added.

60,000-seater multi-purpose stadium to come up in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: A new multi-purpose stadium will be constructed in Bengaluru with a seating capacity of 60,000 for which the government has already identified around 50 acres of land, announced Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. The announcement comes three weeks after the stampede outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations, which claimed 11 lives. Speaking at the 516th birth anniversary celebration of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda organised by the Department Kannada and Culture Department, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Development Authority here on Friday, Shivakumar said that three places have been identified for the project by former MP DK Suresh and the project may require up to 50 acres of land. 'The preparations for the project is in full swing,' he added. Shivakumar, who also holds the portfolio of Bengaluru Development, said, 'Developing Bengaluru is not easy as its population has been increasing. We have launched a 40-km tunnel road, planned a network of flyovers spanning 118-km, and lined up Rs 1 lakh crore worth projects in the next three to four years.' Noting that the government is stressing on creating a clean Bengaluru, the DCM said, 'We're determined to dismantle the garbage mafia. Waste generated in Bengaluru should be handled within Bengaluru without burdening other districts.' Before the event, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah laid the foundation stone for the Kempegowda Bhavan at Sumanahalli Circle. He assured that the building will be constructed at the earliest and that he himself will inaugurate it upon completion. Spatikapuri Mahasamsthana Mutt head Nanjavadhuta Swamiji, also present at the event, urged the government to include Kempegowda's contributions in school curriculums and proposed that a major university be named after him to educate future generations about the city's visionary founder.

Siddaramaiah brushes off Rajanna's remarks, plays down talk of post-Sept political shift

Bengaluru: Embarrassed again by another untimely outburst — this time from a cabinet colleague — chief minister and his deputy Friday played down minister KN Rajanna's comments hinting at major political developments in the state post-Sept. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The two insisted that there is no rift in the state Congress unit. "Minister KN Rajanna only said there may be political developments in the state, but he did not say it is certain to happen. It is better to ignore his remarks," said on the sidelines of an event to mark the 516th birth anniversary of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, widely regarded as the founder of Bengaluru. "Where is there internal bickering?" Siddaramaiah said. "What can be done if you [reporters] write speculative reports? It's better to ignore it," the CM said. He refused to respond to a question on Rajanna's remark that there are several power centres in . On Rajanna's remark suggesting a "revolution in the govt" after Sept, Shivakumar said, "I am not aware of this. I will speak to him and let you know afterwards. In any case, you should ask him directly." Kempegowda memorial plan Shivakumar who also participated in various Kempegowda Jayanti programmes, announced plans for a grand memorial in honour of the Vijayanagar Empire chieftain and unveiled a slew of major infrastructure projects worth Rs 1 lakh crore for Bengaluru. Participating in celebrations at Babu Jagjivan Ram Bhavan, Shivakumar laid the foundation for the new 'Kempegowda Bhavan' and presented the Kempegowda International Awards. "This is a very special occasion," he said. "We allotted five acres through the Kempegowda Development Authority. It is we [Congress govt] who began celebrating the jayanti and gave land. Now, we are laying the foundation stone for a grand building." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Calling Kempegowda the "inspiration" behind modern Bengaluru, Shivakumar said, "He laid the foundation for model governance 500 years ago and welcomed all castes and religions." Shivakumar outlined major civic upgrades, including 40km of tunnel roads (Rs 17,000 crore), 118km of flyovers, and 'Nambike Naksha' scheme, which will deliver 25lakh digitised property records to doorsteps. A 60,000-seat stadium is also planned, with 50 acres identified. He said the Cauvery 5th Stage project has been completed and work is underway on the 6th Stage. "A metro line will pass through Sumanahalli," he added. A Rs 100 crore Kempegowda Research Centre will come up at Bengaluru University, and the Kempegowda International Airport has been recognised with an award for preserving his legacy. "We must never forget the three 'Ks': Kempegowda, Kengal Hanumanthaiah, and SM Krishna. Bengaluru belongs to everyone," Shivakumar said. After garlanding Kempegowda's statue near Vidhana Soudha, Siddaramaiah hailed him as a "far-sighted administrator" and credited him for laying the foundation of modern Bengaluru. He also recalled that during his 2013–2018 tenure, his govt, in consultation with Adichunchanagiri pontiff Nirmalanandanatha Swami, identified Kempegowda's birth date, leading to the annual celebration. "Since then, the govt has been continuously celebrating Kempegowda Jayanti. If Bengaluru is recognised internationally today, it was Kempegowda who laid the foundation for it," he said. Siddaramaiah said Kempegowda's planning continues to guide modern governance. "He built towers in four parts of Bengaluru and developed areas like Nagarathpet, Chikkpet, and Balepet based on his vision for the city," he said.

Shivakumar on Thursday said the founder of Bengaluru, though born in a Vokkaliga community, lived as a 'universal man' whose contributions continue to inspire people across communities. Hemavathi link canal meeting postponed: Karnataka deputy CM Shivakumar

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 26 (ANI): Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced on Thursday that the meeting on the Hemavathi link canal, originally scheduled for June 30, has been postponed to July 4-5, following a request from Union Minister V Somanna. Speaking to reporters at his Sadashivanagar residence here, Shivakumar said, 'We have postponed the meeting as Somanna is also the MP from the district. The officials have been instructed accordingly.' The Deputy CM also addressed the postponement of a meeting with Yettinahole project contractors in Tumakuru, attributing it to the absence of Home Minister G Parameshwar. 'The meeting will now be held in Bengaluru tomorrow or the day after,' he said. Shivakumar emphasised the government's commitment to completing the Yettinahole project on time. 'The CM has instructed us to finish the project within the stipulated period, so we are reviewing problem areas. We are exploring options to store water in Koratagere taluk--whether a new dam is needed or if existing reservoirs can be utilised,' he explained. When asked about his meeting with MLA BR Patil, Shivakumar, who is also the KPCC president, said, 'As party chief, I need to understand ground realities. We will discuss issues with the CM and Housing Minister.' Reacting to questions about dissent within the government, he dismissed the notion, calling it 'a media creation.' Later, while laying the foundation for the Rs 50-crore Matada Halla lift irrigation project in Gubbi, Shivakumar urged people to avoid conflicts over water. 'We all belong to one state. Fighting over water is unnecessary--everyone's interests will be safeguarded,' he said, referring to disputes over the Hemavathi link canal. He also took a dig at former CM HD Kumaraswamy, stating, 'Kumaraswamy said lifting Yettinahole water was impossible, but we made it happen. We are resolving forest land issues and planning dams in Koratagere and Doddaballapur to store water. Without storing at least 3 TMC, we cannot supply water to Chikkaballapur and Kolar.' Shivakumar praised the Visvesvaraya Jala Nigam for its 10-km aqueduct project, calling it a significant achievement. (ANI)
