ASEAN Youths Urge Action On Digital Literacy, Climate Change
KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 (Bernama) -- Youths across ASEAN have called for urgent efforts to strengthen digital literacy and tackle climate change, identifying both as critical pillars for sustainable development and a greener future.
Malaysian youth representative Izzat Afifi Abdul Hamid said these issues received strong and encouraging feedback from ASEAN leaders, who expressed hope that the region's youth would take a more proactive role in shaping ASEAN's development, in line with ASEAN Vision 2045.
'We focused on youth development in a joint statement prepared by ASEAN youth representatives since last Wednesday,' he told reporters after the 4th ASEAN Leaders' Interface with Representatives of ASEAN Youth, held on the sidelines of the 46th ASEAN Summit here today.
Izzat Afifi, who is also Malaysian Youth Council president, said the statement was well received, with leaders responding positively to the recommendations put forward by the youth delegates.
During the session, which was attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim along with ASEAN leaders and youth representatives, Izzat Afifi delivered the joint statement titled 'Youth for a Sustainable Future: Empowering Inclusion and Driving Change in ASEAN', outlining nine key points to enhance youth development across the region.
Also present were Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and Deputy Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim.
Meanwhile, Michelle Ann M. Villanueva of the National Youth Council of the Philippines expressed appreciation for the opportunity to elevate youth voices at the regional level.
'We are heard, we matter, and it is just an amazing experience because the people in the highest positions - those involved in policymaking and decision-making for every country in ASEAN - were there, and they heard what we had to say,' she said.
The 46th ASEAN Summit is being held under Malaysia's 2025 Chairmanship, themed 'Inclusivity and Sustainability.'

PASIR GUDANG: Umno must adopt a dynamic, geographically focused strategy to regain public support, particularly from the youth, said party vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. He said the party's current approach needs to move beyond uniform outreach and be tailored to the demographic and geographic realities of each constituency, especially in urban areas such as Kuala Lumpur and Johor Baru. "You can't apply the same strategy across the board anymore. Urban areas require a different kind of engagement than rural ones," Johari said at a press conference today after officiating the Pasir Gudang Umno division delegates' conference. "They evaluate candidates differently than those who once voted for the founding fathers or for big infrastructure," he said. "Campaigns now must match the mindset of the constituency, not just rely on legacy methods." Johari said the party has increased cooperation with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as part of a broader strategy to connect with younger voters, a demographic previously under-engaged. "Now you see Umno programmes involving more NGOs. This didn't happen before," he said. "Many of our activities today are youth-focused, but it's not just about organising events. It has to fit the context of each area." He said urban centres demand digital-savvy, grassroots-driven outreach, whereas rural constituencies may still favour personal touch and service delivery. Johari also said there is a need to understand rival parties' strengths when formulating Umno's tactical approach. "Success lies not just in how dynamic Umno becomes, but also in how well we assess the strengths of those contesting against us," he said. He called for fresh political thinking as the party prepares for the next general election, warning that outdated models could cost Umno the support it needs to regain ground. "We must think differently if we want to win back the hearts of voters, especially the young," he added.

He noted that the tariff remains competitive compared to other Asean countries, including Indonesia, which also faces the same rate. "The 19% tariff imposed by the US on Malaysia is among the lowest in Asean countries, and even Indonesia, the world's largest palm oil producer, is subject to the same tariff rate," he explained. "In the context of palm oil, Indonesia is the largest producer and we are number two, but Indonesia is also subject to 19% like Malaysia, so there is no problem," he added. Johari made these remarks at a press conference after officiating the Pasir Gudang Umno division annual general meeting. He was responding to queries about whether the 19% tariff would affect the country's commodities on the international stage. It was previously reported that Malaysia will now face a 19% tariff on exports to the US, reduced from the previous 25%, as per an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump. The new tariff structure takes effect in seven days and applies to goods entering the US for consumption, with limited exceptions for shipments already in transit. Signed on July 31, 2025, the order amends Executive Order 14257 and imposes revised ad valorem duties on multiple trading partners, including all major Asean nations. Under the latest tariff list, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Cambodia each face a 19% rate.

JOHOR BAHRU: The United States' decision to impose a 19 per cent reciprocal tariff on Malaysian goods will not affect the competitiveness of Malaysia's commodities in the global market, according to Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. He stated that the tariff rate remains competitive compared to other ASEAN nations, including Indonesia, which faces the same rate. 'We're almost on par with the lowest rates in ASEAN. For example, Indonesia is the world's top producer of oil palm, and we're number two. 'They are also subject to the 19 per cent rate, so for us, 19 per cent is fair. It's not a problem,' he said. Johari made these remarks after attending the Pasir Gudang UMNO Division delegates meeting earlier today. The US announced the new tariff rate yesterday, reducing it from the previously proposed 25 per cent.
